Spot welding is one of the important welding processes for the construction of thin metal sheet. Because of low investment cost, alternating welding current is widely applied for power source. Direct current type could be, however, recommened for high quality weldment. In this study, the effect of welding current type on the weldability and the electrode life in spot welding of aluminium alloy were investigated. Various welding tests were done by using three phase direct and alternating welding current, respectively. In spite of high variation of welding force, weld quality and electrode life with alternating welding current were shown better results than those with direct current for 2mm thick alumininum alloy sheets. This was due to excessive erosion of the positive electrode in direct welding current compared with the negative one. On the contrary to 2mm sheets, the welding parameters of alternating current for 1mm sheets must be carefully selected.
The $CO_2$ welding with 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas is commonly used because of its cost and efficiency. Arc phenomena of the $CO_2$ welding is influenced by various factors such as chemical compositions of welding wire, shielding gas, welding condition and welding power source etc. In this study, arc phenomena is investigated by using two type of FCW(titania type, semi-metal type). Then, the welding quality and optimum welding condition can be selected. From this study, the following results were obtained; 1) In low current range(140A), FCW up to welding voltage(22V) resulted in a typical short circuit transfer. 2) In high current range(320A), the arc stability in titania FCW of a typical globular transfer is better than that of semi-metal FCW.
YP 690MPa grade steels are used as the main structural steel for offshore structure such as Jack-up Rig and WTIV(Wind Turbine Installation Vessel). Most of welding consumables applied to YP 690MPa grade steels are basic type flux cored wires that shows the poor weldability and not suitable for all position welding. For this reason, welding consumables with rutile type flux system is required. Rutile type flux cored wires show excellent weldability and apply to all position welding. This paper presents the mechanical properties of weld metal with rutile type flux cored wire developed and finally assessed the possibility for application.
The characteristics of spatter generation in the short circuit transfer region of $CO_2$ welding was investigated. Spatteriing phenomena could be classified into three types : Type I generated due to the abrupt increase of arc voltage in arcing duration. Type II by the gas ejection from molten metal and Type III generated by the arc instability at the moment of arc re-ignition just after short circuiting. Main observed types were dependent on the chemical composition of welding wires. The case of YCW12 wires was mainly composed of spatters generated by Type l and Type II, while most, spatters in YCW11 wires were generated by Type II and Type III.

When SS400 steel was welded with low hydrogen type and ilmennite type welding, the effect of post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) was investigated with parameters such as micro vickers hardness, corrosion potential, polarization behaviors, galvanic current, Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss etc. Hardness of each parts(HAZ, BM, WM) by PWHT in case of low hydrogen type and ilmennite type welding was lower than that of each parts by As-welded However hardness of WM area in case of low hydrogen type and ilmennite type welding was the highest among those three parts regardless of PWHT, Whereas in case of ilmennite type welding, WM area was the highest potential among these three parts on galvanic potential series with As-welded while BM area was the highest potential among these three parts by PWHT on the contrary. And in case of low hydrogen type welding, galvanic corrosion and micro cell corrosion of welding parts was decreased with PWHT. However, It was increased with PWHT in case of ilmennite type welding. Moreover Al anode generating current and anode weight loss in case of low hydrogen type was decreased by PWHT compared to As-wedled but, which was increased than that of As-welded in case of ilmennite type welding. Therefore, it is suggested that Corrosion resistance property in case of low hydrogen type welding is increased by PWHT. However its property was devreased with PWHT in case of ilmennite type welding.

The contact tip for flux cored arc welding has important functions to transmit the welding current to the wire and to guide the wire to molten pool. A damaged contact tip causes a productivity reduction and a welding quality problem. In this study, the welding experiments for the wear resistance of contact tip regarding flux cored wire types were performed. With two fold type and a seamless type flux cored wires, the wear rates of contact tips were compared. In addition, the wear rate was checked according to the contact tip position.
The feasibility for a practical use of underwater wet arc welding process is experimentally investigated by using low hydrogen and high oxide type electrodes and TMCP steel plates. Main results are summarized as follows: 1)The absorption speed of the coated low hydrogen and high titanium oxide type eletrodes becomes constant after about 30 minutes in water, and more steeping time in water does not influnce welding arc behavior. 2) By bead appearance and X-ray inspection, the high titanium oxide type electrode is better than the low hydrogen type in underwater arc welding process. 3) The mechanical properties of underwater wet arc welds depend upon welding conditions more than those of in-air welds, and the optimum welding condition can be obtained. 4) Because of quenching effect by rapid cooling rate in underwater wet welding, the maximum hardness of HAZ is increased relatively higher in underwater wet welding, process.
This study was conducted to describe the exposure levels of welding fumes by the type of manufacturers, work process, welding type and the size of manufacturers, and to find out the trend of chronological changes of airborne welding fume levels. The subjects of this study were 509 manufacturers, consisting of 11 types of manufacturers, 3 work processes, 7 welding types, in Busan from January, 1997 to December, 2005. Airborne concentration of welding fume was determined by manual of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the data were analyzed by using SPSS 10.0 for Windows program. The mean concentration of airborne welding fume in all manufacturers was $1.29\;mg/m^3$ (Range: $0.01{\sim}3.00\;mg/m^3)$. The level of welding fume was the highest, as $1.96\;mg/m^3$, for manufactures of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, which was lower than $5.0\;mg/m^3$ of 8 hr-TWA in Korean permissible exposure limit for welding fume. There was a significant difference in the mean levels of welding fumes by work process, showing the highest in welding workshop ($1.39\;mg/m^3$), followed by pipeline welding workshop ($1.26\;mg/m^3$) and engineering workshop ($1.20\;mg/m^3$). Among welding types, the mean level of welding fume was the highest in the type of $CO_2$ & arc welding, as $1.46\;mg/m^3$, followed by $CO_2$ welding ($1.40\;mg/m^3$), shielded metal arc welding ($1.31\;mg/m^3$), spot welding ($1.27\;mg/m^3$), and so on. The highest mean level of welding fume was $1.58\;mg/m^3$ in work process of pipe line welding workshop for the manufacturers of basic iron and steel, and $2.27\;mg/m^3$ in the type of arc welding for the manufactures building ship and boats. By the size of manufacturers, the mean concentration of welding fume for manufactures in small scale with less than 50 workers was the highest as $1.45\;mg/m^3$ (Range: $0.07{\sim}3.00\;mg/m^3)$. The mean level of welding fume was the highest as $1.39\;mg/m^3$ both in 1997 and in 2005, showing a trend of fluctuating periodically within a range of $1.10{\sim}1.39\;mg/m^3$. The above results suggested that more effective control program for work environment producing welding fumes should be developed and applied since there were significant variations in welding fume levels by the type of manufacturers, work processes, welding types, the size of manufactures, and by year.

Flux Cored Wire is the most widely used welding material for Flux Cored Arc Welding these days. This paper introduces the technical aspects of manufacturing FCW and the development trend of FCW for each type of steel and metal. The studies are ongoing to lower the production cost of seamless-type FCW since it has not been generally used in welding shops so far because of it high cost even though the seamless-type FCW has various advantages than folded-type FCW in terms of manufacturing technology. Meanwhile, a technical research has been carried out to develop a rutile type of FCW products which satisfies high toughness after post heat treatment. In addition, for high-speed fillet welding, there has been a development of welding materials which can be welded in Single Auto-Carriage 100 cpm or more and up to Twin Tandem 200 cpm without occurring any welding defect in order to improve the welding productivity. As Zn coated steel is being used recently to improve the corrosion resistance of the automotive parts, a research and development for Metal Cored Wire has been conducted to reduce the Si island produced in welding operation than those produced when using the former solid wires. A development of welding material that guarantees CTOD performance beyond $-40^{\circ}C$ CTOD to $-60^{\circ}C$ is underway by different steel grades, and FCW for super austenitic stainless steel is being developed as the corrosion resistant steel has been upgraded.
