In the present study, to estimate the mechanical properties of 800 MPa grade weld metal, welding was carried out using 800 and 600 MPa grade flux cored arc welding (FCAW) consumable and characteristics of the weld metals were investigated. The chemical composition of weld metals was investigated by an optical emission spectroscopy (OES) method. The microstructure of weld metals was analyzed by optical microscopy (OM) and secondary electron microscopy (SEM). The compositions and sizes of inclusions which are the dominant factors for the nuclei of acicular ferrite were analyzed by an transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, mechanical properties of the weld metals were evaluated through tensile tests and charpy impact tests. Mostly the acicular ferrite phase which has high strength and toughness was observed. The 600 MPa grade weld metal was consisted of 75% acicular ferrite and 25% ferrite which was formed at high temperature (grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite, polygonal ferrite). However, the 800 MPa grade weld metal was composed of about 73% acicular ferrite and 27% low temperature phase (bainite, martensite). Toughness was considerably decreased due to the increase of tensile strength (from 600 MPa to 800 MPa). The sizes of inclusions which were observed in both weld metal were $0.4{\sim}0.8\;{\mu}m$, it is effective size to form acicular ferrite.
Recently, welding technology of nonferrous metals which were difficult to implement by arc welder has become available through digitalization of arc welding machine. Among them, the welding quality improvement of aluminum welding is very noticeable. These results increase the arc stability by controlling arc current and voltage waveform precisely, and control wire feed speed by synchronizing with arc current which the feed rate of filler wire is controlled by a precise motor control of servomotor and not by a simple constant speed feeding. Not only through the hardware digitalization of arc welding machine but also through advance of software of arc welding, it became possible to implement a certain level of welding quality by a simple operation. These led to CMT welding process implementation which requires low heat input than current arc welding and highly increased the applicability of the aluminum welding.
Methods of repair welding are different to production welding for welding position, welding process, welding power source, heating methods. This study investigated proper the welding process used the welding process SMAW and GTAW in the weldment of inconel filler metals. Mechanical test showed that SMAW and GTAW process had higher mechanical properties than those of material specification. Both SMAW and GTAW welding process can appy the repair welding. In comparison, GTAW welding process had more higher mechanical properties in the weldment.
In this study, MIG welding was performed on extruded 6005A-T6 material, which is used in the base panel of railway vehicles. The material was considered as the experimental base material, and argon shielding gas and ER5356 and ER4043 filler metals were used as the consumable welding materials. Welding coupons were prepared under various welding conditions by using an auto-welding system that various welding conditions applied 2.5Hz and 4.5Hz the pulse frequency of SynchroPuls function of welding machine and 1.0mm and 1.5mm of root face affect the weld penetration of welding joint. The welding current and voltage were also varied for this testing. On the basis of the results obtained, optimum welding conditions are proposed.
Objective of this research is to evaluate fracture behaviors of fresh-butt welded metal by the acoustic emission technique. The specimens used are medium carbon steel(SM45C), mild steel (SS41) and stainless steel(SUS304), which have different weldability. The similar welding and dissimilar welding processes are considered, in the former SM45C, SS41 and SUS304 are used, in the later the following metals are used SM45C and SS41, SM45C and SUS304 and SS41 and SUS304. The characteristics of fracture in weld metal are eshmated by the tension test with nominal speciemns, the fracture toughness test with compact tension specimens and fractography analysis. The results of tension test show for base metals and similar welding materials that the yield strength and ultimate strength of similar welding materials are increased, the elongation of those are decreased. The weldability of SUS304 is better than that of SM45C and SS41 In similar welding materials. Mechanical properties of dissimilar welding mateiiths we lower than those of similar welding materials. In dissimilar welding materials, the weldability of SM45C and SUS304 is better than that of SM45C and SS41, and also weidability of SS41 and SUS304 is better than SS41 and SM45C. Comparing mechanical properties with AE counts, it is found that AE conuts appeared on a small before the limit load of elasticity(P$_{e}$), and apper greatly near yield strength region in tension test. These results could contribute to the safety analyses and the evaluation of strength for welding structure.e.
A study on the welding of electrogalvanized TRIP (Transformation-Induced Plasticity) steels was done to compare the life of the electrode and the alloying phenomena on the electrode tip surface using singlephase AC and inverter-DC resistance welding processes. A longer life of the electrode (>200 welds) was achieved using the inverter-DC welding process. The tensile shear strength was higher in the electrode life test when welded with the inverter DC welding machine it maintained a higher value even when the welding nugget diameter was smaller than specified. When spot-welding was conducted using the single-phase AC welding process, a higher wear rate of the electrode was observed compared to that with the inverter-DC process. An alloying layer used to determine the rate of electrode growth showed differences in the metallurgical features of the surface alloying and Zn penetration depending on whether the single-phase AC process or the inverter-DC welding process was used. Moreover, changes in the dynamic resistance during the electrode life test were correlated with the electrode wear (or growth) rate.
Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between STS 316L and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with GTAW have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, ferrite content, chemical analysis, hardness and corrosion resistance. Three heat inputs of 9.00, 11.25, 13.00kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with ER309 wire. Based on microstructural examination, the amount of vermicular type of ${\delta}$-ferrite was increased with increasing heat input due to the increase of Creq/Nieq in the second layer of welds. Based on the EDX analysis of weld metals, Cr and Ni content in the 2nd layer increased while those content in the first layer of welds decreased with heat inputs. Cellular solidification mode in the 1st layer and dendritic solidification mode in the 2nd layer due to different cooling rates were prevailed, respectively. Heat affected zone which formed hard microstructure showed higher hardness than the weld metal. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals weld joints showed that the carbon steel surfaces only corroded. The weight loss rate due to corrosion increased up to 100hours but it decreased above 100 hours. There was little difference in the weight loss caused by corrosion regardless of heat inputs.
We quantified the human carcinogenic metals (chromium, nickel) in fumes from flux cored arc welding using stainless steel (FCAW/SS) wires. Zinc and calcium were also quantified because of their possibility of zinc chromate and calcium chromate, respectively. Welding was performed in an American Welding Society standard fume collection chamber. Insoluble and soluble forms of metals were analyzed by ISO 15202 method. Total chromium (insoluble+soluble) content and total nickel content were lower in FCAW/SS fumes (4.65%, 1.05%, respectively)than in stainless steel content (ca. 18%, 8%,respectively). Insoluble fraction in total chromium was 79.8 (range 64.5~95.1)% and 94.4(range 90.1~98.1)% in total nickel. Atomic emission spectroscopy used in this study does not differentiate the chromium valence status while ACGIH defines its carcinogenicity according to the valence status. From this study and previous study, we estimated the hexavalent chromium content in FCAW/SS was 0.2~1.1% and about 85% of them was soluble. The content of zinc and calcium, which can be existed as chromate forms, was low (0.02 %, 0.04% respectively) in FCAW/SS. Exposure assessment for zinc chromate and calcium chromate is possible because chromium in both compounds is used as a surrogate even though it is not well known that what compounds of zinc and calcium are formed in welding fume.
Hydrogen-delayed fracture (HDF) was analyzed from the deposited weld metals of 600-MPa and 800-MPa flux-cored arc (FCA) welding wires, and then from the diffusible hydrogen behavior of the weld zone. Two types of deposited weld metal, that is, rutile weld metal and alkali weld metal, were used for each strength level. Constant loading test (CLT) and thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) analysis were conducted on the hydrogen pre-charged specimens electrochemically for 72 h. The effects of microstructures such as acicular ferrite, grain-boundary ferrite, and low-temperature-transformation phase on the time-to-failure and amount of diffusible hydrogen were analyzed. The fracture time for hydrogen-purged specimens in the constant loading tests decreased as the grain size of acicular ferrite decreased. The major trapping site for diffusible hydrogen was the grain boundary, as determined by calculating the activation energies for hydrogen detrapping. As the strength was increased and alkali weld metal was used, the resistance to HDF decreased.

Adhesive bonding is becoming one of the popular joining techniques in metal industries, since it has some advantages over other techniques such as welding and diffusion bonding, e.g., any dissimilar metals are easily adhesive-bonded together. In this study, the experiments were carried out in order to provide the statistical data with strength evaluation methods: tension, shear and four-point bending tests for thermoplastic epoxy resin based adhesive-bonded metal joints. We should certificate on the probability of the adhesive strength that has the tendency of brittle fracture, the adhesive bonding strength between metals with thermoplastic adhesive has the best probability at four-point bending test. The strength testing method that has higher probability is four-point bending test, shear test and tensile test in order.
