This paper describes an experimental study on ultrasonic welding of similar and dissimilar metals. There are optimum welding conditions which are found for welding of Al/Al and Al/Cu. It evaluated weldability using tensile test, SEM observation and EDX-ray analysis. Both ultrasonic welding of Al/Al and Al/Cu have amplitude as the variable factor. Al/Cu welding was examined again with welding time as variable factor to find the best conditions. The more welding time or amplitude increase, the better weldability. The optimum conditions for ultrasonic welding of Al/Al were formed at pressure 0.25 MPa, welding time 0.25 sec, amplitude 90%. Pressure 0.25 MPa, welding time 0.4 sec, amplitude 80% are optimized for Al/Cu ultrasonic metal welding and solid-state diffusion generated by ultrasonic vibration and frictional heat is confirmed at the welded interface.
Recently, the fuel using in the diesel engines of marine ships has been changed to a low quality of heavy oil because of the steady increase in the price of oil. Therefore, the wear and corrosion in all parts of the engine such as the cylinder liner, piston crown, and spindle and seat ring of exhaust valves has correspondingly increased. The repair welding of a piston crown is a unique method for prolonging its lifetime from an economic point of view. In this case, filler metals with a high corrosion and wear resistance are mainly being used for repair welding. However, often at a job site on a ship, a piston crown is actually welded with mild filler metals. Therefore, in this study, mild filler metals such as CSF350H, E8000B2, and 435 were welded to SS401 steel as the base metal, and the corrosion properties of the weld metals with and without post weld heat treatment were investigated using some electrochemical methods in a 0.1% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The weld metal welded with CSF350H filler metal exhibited the best corrosion resistance among these filler metals, irrespective of the heat treatment. However, the weld metal zones of the E8000B2 and 435 filler metals exhibited better and worse corrosion resistance with the heat treatment, respectively. As a result, it is suggested that in the case of repair welding with CSF350H and 435 filler metals, no heat treatment is advisable, while heat treatment is desirable if E8000B2filler metal is used with repair welding.

This study is about an influence of harmful factors of welding fumes such as Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn to workers who inhales them in welding sites. The influence can be measured with the density of heavy metals in blood after welding. The main factors of the measurement are TWA, a density of welding fume, and a level of heavy metals. The results indicate that there is a positive effect of moving fans as a way of improving the condition in welding workplaces. While welding was done, TWA exceeded the level of Fe 40% and Zn 10% and the level of heavy metals in blood was below the standard for the workers who were under the experiment. Also when the wind was applied on the front side by a fan, the welding fume significantly reduced. It can be concluded that wearing protection gears with safety devices is one of important factors.
Resistance spot welding has been widely used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. Recently, automobile industries are trying to replace partly steel sheets with aluminum alloy sheets. Among currently produced aluminum alloys, Al alloy sheets of Al-Mg-Si(6000 series) are being tested. Especially, 6000 series are the most probable substitute in view of strength and weldability. In this paper, an attempt was made to apply resistance spot welding to joining of dissimilar sheet metals (KS6383+SCPZn or KS6383+SHCP). An effort was made to balance heating rate in the Al alloy with that in the steel sheets by increasing electrode tip diameter. Although resistance spot welding of Al alloy sheet and sheet metals does not produce desirable nugget, it proved to have reasonable strength if optimal weld condition is found by tensile-shear strength and fatigue life test. Since spot weld joints in automobile are always experiencing repeated load, spot welding methodology proposed in this paper is found to be not suitable to automobile body manufacturing.

High power laser beams are used in a wide variety of materials processing applications such as cutting, welding, drilling and surface treatment. The CO$\sub$2/ laser is increasingly used in laser beam welding because of the highly potential advantages. High power laser welding is a high energy density, no filler metals and low heat input process to join metals. As the comparison with the conventiona welding, precision work and good fit-up to join the metals are required and maintenance is expensive at present. The principal variables of laser beam welding are the laser beam power, travel speed and bean spot size. The penetration depth during laser beam welding is directly related to the power density of the laser beam. Generally, for a constant beam size, the penetration depth increases with increasing laser beam power.
This paper shows the experimental results controlling the height of surface and back bead in GMAW by analyzing the unexpected gaps between base metals produced in welding and by controlling welding velocity due to the variation of the gap between base metals in thin-plate welding. The back bead behavior and burn-through in I-type butt joint $CO_2$ welding of thin mild steel are analyzed in the views of short circuit time ratio and short circuit frequency. It is shown through experimental consideration that the short circuit time ratio method is more reasonable than the short circuit frequency method in analyzing the formulation of back bead under changing the gap between base metals. Based on the these results, welding manipulator is designed so as to satisfy the bead height control in real time by measuring the short circuit time ratio. To show the effectiveness of the developed bead formulation control system, the experiment is implemented under two welding conditions such as increasing gap from 0mm to 0.8mm and gradually increasing gap from 0mm to 1.2mm. The experimental results show that the bead formulation can be controlled uniformly in spite of the variation of the gap between base metals.
Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial applications with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristcs of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents an attempt to determine the relationship between the varios welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo method in dissibilar metals friction weld. The new approach of calculating the coefficients of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes is applied in this paper. These coefficients provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitave relationship between welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo exists in dissimilar metals friction weld.
This study was undertaken to investigate the friction welding of A2024-T6 aluminum alloy and SM45C carbon steel using insert metals. The relationships among the friction welding conditions, the tensile strength of joints, the hardness distribution of welds, the microstructure of welds and the tensile fracture surfaces were mainly investigated through this experiment. When the A6063-T5 aluminum alloy of insert metal was used, the maximum tensile strengh of joint was obtained. In this case, the maximum joint efficiency was 75.3 percent and in the case of unusing the insert metals, it was 37.7 percent. Optimal welding conditions were N=2000rpm, P$_1$=40MPa, P$_2$=140MPa, t$_1$=1.0sec and t$_2$=5sec.
The purpose of this study is to assess the accurate state of the following: total welding fumes versus welding fumes in the air, respirable particulate mass, and exposure of dockyard welders to heavy metals. In addition, this study provides basic data for proposing improvements to create efficient and appropriate welding environments and to prevent occupational diseases. The subjects of this study were 94 laborers who worked at the block construction sites of large-scale dockyards located in Gyeongnam Province from March 2005 to June 2005. In order to collect samples on total welding fumes in the air and respirable particulate mass from the welders, Methods 0500 and 0600, established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), were used. The metals within the welding fumes were also analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) under Method 7300 from NIOSH. The results of this research are summarized below. The geometric mean concentration of total welding fumes and that of respirable particulate mass were $4.11\;mg/m^3\;and\;3.53\;mg/m^3$, respectively. As a result of comparing the two measurement methods, there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the two groups for Ca, Cu, Cr, and Ni; however, there were no differences in Fe, Mg, Zn, Mg, Pb, and Cd. As a result of the analysis, the correlation between Mn and the concentration of heavy metals in the total welding fumes and respirable particulate mass was found to be -0.29, a significant negative correlation. The correlation between other heavy metals, however, was low. Finally, in the same total welding fumes, the correlation of Fe and Mg was high.
