To get the appropriate welding process variables, mathematical modeling in conjunction with many experiments is necessary to predict the magnitude of weld bead shape. Even though the experimental results are reliable, it has a difficulty in accurately predicting welding process variables for the desired weld bead shape because of nonlinear and complex characteristics of welding processes. The welding condition determined for the desired weld bead shape may cause the weld defect if the welding current/voltage/speed combination is improperly selected. In this study, the $2^{n-1}$ fractional factorial design method and correlation parameter were used to investigate the effect of the welding process variables on the fillet joint shape, and the multiple non-linear regression analysis was used for modeling the gas metal arc welding(GMAW)parameters of the fillet joint. Finally, a fuzzy rule-based method and a neural network method were proposed so that the complexity and non-linearity of arc welding phenomena could be effectively overcome. The performance of the proposed neuro-fuzzy system was evaluated through various experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed neuro-fuzzy system could effectively check the welding conditions as to whether or not weld defects would occur, and also adjust the welding conditions to avoid these weld defects.
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a complex process with several mutually interdependent parameters. A slight difference from known settings may lead to imperfections in the stirred zone. These inhomogeneities affect on the mechanical properties of the FSWed joints. In order to prevent the failure of the welded joint it is necessary to detect the most critical defects non-destructive. Especially critical defects are wormhole and lack of penetration (LOP), because of the difficulty of detection. Online thermography is used process-accompanying for defect detecting. A thermographic camera with a fixed position relating to the welding tool measures the heating-up and the cool down of the welding process. Lap joints with sound weld seam surfaces are manufactured and monitored. Different methods of evaluation of heat distribution and intensity profiles are introduced. It can be demonstrated, that it is possible to detect wormhole and lack of penetration as well as surface defects by analyzing the welding and the cooling process of friction stir welding by passive online thermography measurement. Effects of these defects on mechanical properties are shown by tensile testing.
As the performance of microelectronic devices is improved, the use of copper as a heat dissipation member is increasing due to its good thermal conductivity. The high thermal conductivity of copper, however, leads to difficulties in the joining process. Satisfactory bonding with copper is known to be difficult, especially if high shear and peel strengths are desired. The primary reason is that a copper oxide layer develops rapidly and is weakly attached to the base metal under typical conditions. Thus, when a clean copper substrate is bonded, the initial strength of the joint is high, but upon environmental exposure, an oxide layer may develop, which will reduce the durability of the joint. In this study, an epoxy adhesive formulation was investigated to improve the strength and reliability of a copper to copper joint. Epoxy hardeners such as anhydride, dihydrazide, and dicyandiamide and catalysts such as triphenylphosphine and imidazole were added to an epoxy resin mixture of DGEBA and DGEBF. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed that the curing temperatures were dependent on the type of hardener rather than on the catalyst, and higher heat of curing resulted in a higher Tg. The reliability of the copper joint against a high temperature and high humidity environment was found to be the lowest in the case of dihydrazide addition. This is attributed to its high water permeability, which led to the formation of a weak boundary layer of copper oxide. It was also found that dicyandiamide provided the highest initial joint strength and reliability while anhydride yielded intermediate performance between dicyandiamide and dihydrazide.

Considering the fuel consumption of car, a light structure of aluminum alloys is desired fer car body nowadays. However, fusion welding of aluminum alloys has some problems of reduction of joint efficiency, porosity formation and hot cracking. In the present work, investigation to improve the joint performance of laser welded joint has been carried out by addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr to A6NO 1 alloy welds. Aluminum alloy plate of 2.Omm in thickness with filler metal bar was welded by twin beam Nd: YAG laser facility (total power: 5kW). The filler metals were prepared by changing the chemical compositions for adding the elements into the weld metal. Thirteen filler metal bars were prepared and pre-placed into the base metal before welding. Ar gas shielding with a flow rate of 10 1/min was used. The defocusing distance is kept at 0 mm. At travel speeds off 3 to 9 and at laser power of 5kW (front beam 2kW rear beam 3kW), full penetration welds were obtained, whereas at travel speeds of 12 to 18 m/min and same power, partial penetration was observed. The joint efficiency of laser-welded joint was improved by the addition of Cu, Ni, and Zr due to the solid solution hardening, grain refining and precipitation hardening. The type of hardening has been further considered by metallurgical examination.
In Friction Stir Lap Welding(FSLW), the movement of material within the weld was more important than the microstructure, due to the interface present between the sheets. Thus, The soundness of free defect, Effective Sheet Thickness(EST) and width of joint were most important factor of mechanical properties. Specimens by lap joint types that were 'A-type' and 'R-type' were made in this study. A-type tensile specimen was loaded at advancing side and R-type tensile specimen was loaded at retreating side. Macro-, micro-structural observation and mechanical properties of FSLW A5052-H112 alloy ware investigated under varying rotating and welding speed. The results were as follows: Material hook formed decreasing after sharply increasing was appeared at the end interface of joint area in advanced side, and material hook formed decreasing after smoothly increasing was observed at that in retreated side. Tensile load had no relation with defects. As rotating speed was higher, tensile strength was increasing and EST was decreasing regardless of joint types. joint efficiency was over 70%. In a result of fractography, fracture in A-type was partially occurred by dimple in SZ, and fracture in R-type was generally occurred by dimple in HAZ.
This experimental study investigated friction stir welding (FSW) of the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) T-joint in the presence of various nano-silica levels. This study aim to handle the drawbacks of the friction stir welding (FSW) of an ABS T-joint with various quantity of nanoparticles and assess the performance of nanoparticles in the welded joint. Moreover, the relationship between the nanoparticle quantity and FSW was analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM) Box-Behnken design. The input parameters were the tool rotation speed (400, 600, 800 rpm), the transverse speed (20, 30, 40 mm/min), and the nano-silica level (0.8, 1.6, 2.4 g). The tensile strength of the prepared specimens was determined by the universal testing machine. Silica nanoparticles were used to improve the mechanical properties (the tensile strength) of ABS and investigate the effect of various FSW parameters on the ABS T-joint. The results of Box-Behnken RSM revealed that sound joints with desired characteristics and efficiency are fabricated at tool rotation speed 755 rpm, transverse speed 20 mm/min, and nano-silica level 2.4 g. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images revealed the crucial role of silica nanoparticles in reinforcing the ABS T-joint. The SEM images also indicated a decrease in the nanoparticle size by the tool rotation, leading to the filling and improvement of seams formed during FSW of the ABS T-joint.
In this paper concentrate on the comparison of the thermal and mechanical characteristics in Butt joint of ship structure AH32 steel by using hybrid welding and conventional SAW. For this purpose, fundamental welding phenomena of hybrid process using $CO_2$ Laser and MIG is investigated by the experiments and characteristics of thermal and welding residual stress distribution of welded joint in SAW and hybrid welding are understood from the result of FE numerical simulation and experimental values. From the result of this study, it is understood that Laser-MIG hybrid welding have high potential, make substantial saving of time and manufacturing cost and may proves its self robust in the butt joining of thick AH32 steel ship structural plate in the near future.
Inertia welding is a solid-state welding process in which butt welds in materials are made in bar and in ring form at the joint face, and energy required for welding is obtained from a rotating flywheel. The stored energy is converted to frictional heat at the interface under axial load. The quality of the welded joint depends on many parameters, including axial force, initial revolution speed and energy, amount of upset, working time, and residual stresses in the joint. Inertia welding was conducted to make the large rotor shaft for low speed marine diesel engine, alloy steel for shaft of 140mm. Due to different material characteristics, such as, thermal conductivity and flow stress, on the two sides of the weld interface, modeling is crucial in determining the optimal weld geometry and parameters. FE simulation was performed by the commercial code DEFORM-2D. A good agreement between the predicted and actual welded shape is observed. It is expected that modeling will significantly reduce the number of experimental trials needed to determine the weld parameters.
As parts are becoming more complex and smaller with the development of new materials, high-quality laser precision processing is getting the limelight. Laser enables quick processing and less deformation of materials. It also enables welding with diverse materials. In this study, the pole rod and tap for the secondary battery were laser-welded using cross and coaxial nozzles. The results of the comparative analysis of cross and coaxial nozzles according to the processing parameters showed that the coaxial nozzle had more sensitive welding characteristic to the nozzle position or pressure than the cross nozzle. This indicated that the processing parameters should be carefully determined for the welding with the coaxial nozzle. The pole rod and tap were welded together in a form of T joint to improve the output of the secondary battery, and the cross nozzle had a better welding characteristic than the coaxial nozzle.
This paper describes a newly developed arc-sensing algorithm of seam-tracking for FCA W (flux-cored arc welding) horizontal fillet welding. In this algorithm, arc current and the Weighted-Are-Current (WAC) are used to adjust the position of a weld torch in directions of bead throat and weaving, respectively. The WAC, which is newly devised in this study, means that arc current in the vicinity of weaving end is more emphasized than that in the center of weaving. The reason of this is because there usually exists much noise in the center of weaving due to abrupt change of arc length in case some empty gaps exist in a fillet joint Variance analysis was performed in order to check the effect of weld parameters on arc current and the WAC. As a result, the relationships between tip-to-workpiece distance and arc current, and between weaving offset and the WAC were established. To check "the validity of the algorithm, seam-tracking experiments were performed ;mder various welding condition. The result of experiments showed a satisfactory tracking performance in the presence of empty gaps in a horizontal fillet joint.et joint.
