An Evaluation of Fatigue Properties on Dissimilar Friction Weld of Heat-Resisting Steels Used in Vehicle Valves (차량 밸브용 내열강재 이종 마찰용접부의 피로특성 평가)

  • The fatigue crack propagation characteristics were investigated on dissimilar friction weld of two kind of heat-resisting steels (STR3 and STR35) commonly used in valve materials for vehicles. A small circular artificial defect was machined to induce fatigue crack at bonded line, heat affected zone and base metal of the weld on the surface of the specimens. From the results of the experiment, the fatigue limits of the materials STR3 and STR35 were obtained to be 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. The STR35 base metal and 1.0mm HAZ specimens showed 190% and 82% higher fatigue life than STR3 base metal. And the fatigue life of 1.0mm HAZ specimen was shown 99% on STR3 and 29% on STR35 higher than that of their base metal. But the fatigue life of weld interface specimen was shown 18% on STR3 and 72% on STR35 lower than that of their base metal because of the weld interface separation.

  • TFT-LCD is the most popular type of flat display panel in the information technology field. The back light unit is a main part of the structure of a TFT-LCD panel. Occasionally, studies have shown that failures of the CCFL of the BLU occur due to the poor weld characteristics of these materials. The aim of this study was to prepare some technical data and to characterize a microjoined electrode for the CCFL. Microstructure examinations, microhardness measurements, resistance measurements and microtensile tests of the microjoined electrode were carried out. The result indicates that a large amount of grain coarsening exists in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the weld between the cup and the pin. This grain coarsening of the HAZ between the cup and pin is caused by the welding cycle, which may have an influence on the lowest microhardness values. Fracturing of the microjoined electrode also occurred at the HAZ close to the cup between the weld holding the cup and the pin. Additionally, no specific changes of the electrical resistance among the cup, pin, and lead wire themselves or in the microjoined electrode were observed.

  • A novel type of buckling restrained brace with built-up angle steel was developed. The core segment was formed by welding angle steel, and the middle section was reduced by cutting technology to solve the problem that the end of BRB was easy to buckle. The experimental program has been undertaken to study the performance of BRBs with different unbonded materials (silica gel, kraft paper) and different filler materials (ordinary concrete, full light-weight concrete). Four specimens were designed and fabricated for low cycle reciprocating load tests to simulate horizontal seismic action. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, tension-compression unbalance coefficient and other mechanical parameters were compared and analyzed. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to conduct numerical simulation, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental phenomena. The test results indicated that the hysteretic curve of each specimen was plump. Sustaining cumulative strains of each specimen was greater than the minimum value of 200 required by the code, which indicated the ductility of BRB was relatively good. The energy dissipation coefficient of the specimen with silica gel as unbonded material was about 13% higher than that with kraft paper. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.

AN INFLUENCE OF ABUTMENT MATERIALS ON A SCREW-LOOSENING AFTER CYCLIC LOADING (임플랜트 상부구조의 재료가 반복하중 후 나사풀림에 미치는 영향)

  • Statement of problem: A phenomenon of screw-loosening in implant abutment is frequently occurred in a single and multiple implant restoration. Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate an effect of abutment material on screw-loosening before and after a cyclic loading. In a single-tooth implant, different materials of abutment, Type III Gold alloy and Zirconium composite$(ZrO_2/Al_2O_3)$ were used. Material and method: The Gold alloy(Type III) and Zirconium composite$(ZrO_2/Al_2O_3)$ were used to make a superstructure of implant, the one of types of UCLA, Each group was constituted of 5 sample with a 30-degree offset angulated loading platform. The external hexagonal fixture was rigidly hel d in a special holding zig to ensure solid fixation without rotation during the tightening and a cyclic loading. A Titanium-alloy screw was used to connect and controlled to be tighten in 20Ncm torque by a digital torque gauge. A 20 times of consecutive closing/opening cycle were performed to evaluate the immediate torque loss. In 5 sample of each material group, an initial opening torque was recorded during 3 closing/opening cycle, then 2Hz, 200N, 1,000,000 cyclic loadings were performed, then a opening torque was evaluated. Result & Conclusion: 1. In this limited study, titanium alloy screw tightened in 20Ncm, a cold-welding phenomen on was not observed during the 20 times of closing/opening cycle(p=0.11, p=0.18). 2. In titanium alloy abutment screw, repeated opening and closing of the screw caused to progressive decrease of opening torque(p=0.014). 3. The difference in preload of screw between gold alloy abutment and ceramic$(ZrO_2/Al_2O_3)$ abutment was not significant(p=0.78). 4. The difference in torque loss of screw between gold alloy abutment and ceramic$(ZrO_2/Al_2O_3)$ abutment was not significant after 2Hz,200N, 1,000,000 cyclic loading(p=0.92). 5. In titanium alloy abutment screw tightened by 20Ncm, the screw loosening was not significant on each group after 2Hz, 200Ncm, 1,000,000 cyclic loading(p=0.59).

Optimization of Resistance Spot Weld Condition for Single Lap Joint of Hot Stamped 22MnB5 by Taking Heating Temperature and Heating Time into Consideration (핫스템핑 공정에서 가열온도 및 유지시간을 고려한 22MnB5의 단일겹치기 저항 점용접 조건 최적화)

  • In this study, optimization of the process parameters of the resistance spot welding of a sheet of aluminum-coated boron alloyed steel, 22MnB5, used in hot stamping has been performed by a Taguchi method to increase the strength of the weld joint. The process parameters selected were current, electrode force, and weld time. The heating temperature and heating time of 22MnB5 are considered to be noise factors. It was known that the variation in the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer between the aluminum-coated layer and the substrate, which influences on the formation of nugget, was generated due to the difference of diffusion reaction according to heating conditions. From the results of spot weld experiment, the optimum weld condition was determined to be when the current, electrode force, and weld time were 8kA, 4kN, and 18 cycles, respectively. The result of a test performed to verify the optimized weld condition showed that the tensile strength of the weld joint was over 32kN, which is considerably higher than the required strength, i.e., 23kN.

  • Aircraft can often be exposed to a variety of environments and vibrations such as engine, hydraulic pump, aerodynamic force. These may cause cracking and destruction of the mechanical structure and sub-components by high-cycle fatigue. The axial piston type pump which is usually applied to the aircraft hydraulic pump can be necessarily accompanied by the fluid pulsation by continuous rotation of the axial piston. The fatigue crack was identified at the dampener fitting welding zone to prevent vibration damping during the running of aircraft equipped with this type of pulsation hydraulic pump. In order to understand the root cause of this matter, fracture and component analyses were carried out and also integral type dampener fitting was applied to prevent recurrence of the crack as a subject of design improvements. Structural integrity stress analysis, fatigue analysis, qualification test and aircraft system equipped test was conducted to verify the design validity in application to integral type dampener fitting. The test results were sufficiently satisfactory with the demand lifetime of the material from the various types of test as conducted and the subject of design improvement in this study could be objectively evaluated that shall be applied to the operational aircraft.

  • Necessity of demonstration test to evaluate the structural integrity of a basket for accident conditions arose during license approval procedure for the WSPP's dry storage facility named MACSTOR/KN-400. A drop test facility for demonstration was constructed in KAERI site and demonstration tests for basket drop were conducted. As the upper welding region of a loaded basket was collided with a dropped basket during the drop test, the welding in this region was fractured and leakage happened after the drop test. The enhancement of basket design was needed since the existing basket design was not able to satisfy the performance requirement. The directions for design modification were determined and six enhanced designs were derived based on these directions. Structural analyses and specimen tests for each enhanced design were conducted. By evaluating structural analysis results and test results, one among six enhanced designs was decided as a final design for revision. The final design was the one to reduce the height of central post of a basket and to decrease the impact velocity with a dropped basket. Test basket models were fabricated with accordance with the final enhanced design. Additional demonstration test was performed for this test model and all the performance requirements were satisfied.

Study on tension-tension fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate (수중용접한 국산 SM41A-2강판의 편진반복 인장하중하의 피로강도특성에 관한 연구)

  • Nowadays, the high development of industrial technique demands the optimal design of marine structures to be welded under the water, because the underwater welding of the ship hull and marine structures can decrease manpower and cost of production. However there is not available at present any report on fatigue behavior about underwater welded joints. In this paper under tention- tension repeated fatigue stress with frequency of 10 cycles per second by local controlled system, the fatigue strength properties of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 Plate-to-Plate of 10 mm thickness were experimentally examined. The results obtained were as follows : 1) The fatigue strength of underwater welded joints of SM41A-2 was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm(180 A, 36 V), while, at the heat input of more than about 1, 100 joule/mm (160 A, 33 V) that of the underwater welds at the higher than cycle of life rather than the lower cycle was higher than that of the base metal but lower than that of the atmosphere welds on account of both cooling and notch effects. 2) The fatigue limit of underwater welds increased with an increase of heat input resulting in a peak of that at the heat input of about 1, 400 joule/mm and then decreased gradually. 3) The fatigue strength at N cycles was peaked between the heat input of about 1, 400 and 1, 700 joule/mm where the strain was rapidly increased. 4) It was confirmed that the optimal zone of heat input condition for obtaining the underwater welds fatigue strength higher than that of the base metal exists, and if out of this zone, the fatigue strength of the underwater welds was lower than that of the base metal because of lack weld penetration, inclusion of slag, voids, etc. 5) By the fatigue test, the underwater welds fractured brittly without visual deformation, so the strain was remarkably less than of the atmosphere welds. 6) The fatigue life factor was peaked at the heat input of about 1, 600 joule/mm (200 A, 36 V) at which the mean strain is a little higher than that of the base metal but quite lower than those of the atmosphere welds, resulting in good underwater welds because both fatigue strength and ductility of the underwater welds are higher than those of the base metal at such heat input.

Design of Environmentally Sound Manufacturing Process of Fork Lift using LCA and DfE Methodology (LCA와 DfE기법을 이용한 친환경적인 지게차 제조공정의 설계)

  • Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) and Design for Environment(DfE) method were applied to design the environmentally sound manufacturing process of f31k lift in this study. Not only external movement of LCA and DfE method in the legal and systemic phase, but also active researches of those in the development phase of case study and application to the industrial field, have been going on. In concretely, the manufacturing processes of the folk lift generating the most environmental impact were examined by applying LCA method, and the environmentally sound manufacturing process was designed by applying, DfE method to the processes. As the results of LCA, environmental impacts for the eco-toxicity and human toxicity of seven major environmental categories were in high value, and so be in the cutting & welding process and painting process among the manufacturing processes. High solid paints, increasing the solid content of the existing solvent paints used in painting process, were developed to reduce the environmental impacts generated in the painting process. By utilizing the high solid paints, about 20% of environmental impacts (as environmental index of LCA) could be reduced.

  • ELV(; End of Life Vehicles)를 비롯한 최근 환경 동향은 자동차 전장 모듈에 대하여 다양한 무연 솔더 적용을 요구하고 있다. 특히 자동차 엔진룸과 트랜스미션은 가동 중 고온 및 진동의 지속적인 영향을 받기 때문에 이와 유사한 환경에서의 신뢰성 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Sn3.5Ag, Sn0.7Cu, Sn5.0Sb 솔더 조성에 대하여 복합환경 조건하에서 접합부 신뢰성을 평가하였다. 복합환경을 구현하기 위하여 $-40{\sim}150^{\circ}C$ 범위의 온도 사이클과 랜덤 진동을 동시에 인가하였으며, 진동 가속도 3G, 진동주파수는 10~1000Hz 로 설정하여 자동차 환경을 충족하였다. 복합시험의 1 cycle 은 20 시간이며, 총 120 시간의 시험 동안 진동의 영향 및 진동과 고온이 동시에 작용하였을 경우의 영향에 대해 비교하였다. 테스트 모듈 제작을 위해 450 um 의 솔더볼이 적용되었으며, 각 조성의 솔더볼을 이용하여 BGA test chip 제작하였고, 제작된 BGA test chip 은 다시 daisy chain PCB 위에 실장 및 리플로우 공정을 통해 접합되었다. 테스트 동안 In-situ 로 저항의 변화를 관찰하여 파단의 유무를 판단하였고 전자주사현미경을 통해 파괴 기전을 평가하였다. 복합시험 시간에 따른 전단강도를 측정하였으며, 각 조성에 대하여 상이한 전단강도 변화를 관찰하였다. 계면 IMC 형상은 전단강도 변화에 영향을 주었으며, 특히 높은 온도가 IMC 성장을 촉진시켜 전단강도 감소에 영향을 주었다. 본 복합환경 시험 조건에서는 Sn0.7Cu 가 가장 안정적이었으며, 파단면을 관찰한 결과 연성파괴 모드가 관찰되었다.
