Aluminized steel sheet is a material with excellent heat resistance, thermal reflection and corrosion resistance. It has wide applications, owing to its low cost and excellent performance, in the petrochemical industry, electric power and other energy conversion systems, etc and has attracted the attention of many investigators. But the welding of aluminized steel sheet has a problem of decreasing tensile-shear strength, caused by mixed Al in the weld. This study investigated behavior of Al and its structural properties to resolve this problem. Several analysis equipment(SEM, EDX, EPMA) were used to investigate Al element in the weld. Also microhardness tester and TEM equipment were used to find the intermetallic compound. As a result of this study, Al-rich zones existed in the weld and Fe-Al intermetallic compounds were found in these zones. At the same time, the weldability of aluminized stainless steel sheet was investigated and compared with that of aluminized steel sheet. Although there is a difference between the base metal of the low carbon steel and stainless steel, it is interpreted that a behavior of Al element in the weld is similar.
This study was performed to find the best bonding conditions by comparing mechanical properties in thermoplastic resin of polyethylene (PE) and polyamide (PA) adhesion. Following results were obtained from the tests with varying welding time and welding pressure. Satisfactory adhesion was executed in ultrasonic welding for the same materials of PE and PA. The best welding conditions were found to be welding time of 1 second, welding pressure of 250kPa for PE-PE weding, 2 second and 350kPa for PA-PA welding. Welding time and welding pressure end to increase with the increase of materials strength. Dissimilar materials were adhered when adhesion and ultrasonc welding were performed simultaneously. The observation of the structure of ultrasonic welding area with microscope showed differenticated structures between well adhered region and badly adhered region.

A copper-tungsten sintered alloy(WCu) has been friction-welded to a tough pitch copper (Cu) in order to investigate friction weldability. The maximum tensile strength of the SWu-Cu friction welded joints had cp to 96% of those of the Cu base metal under the condition of friction time 0.6sec, friction pressure 45MPa, upset pressure 125MPa and upset time 5.0sec. And it is confirmed that the tensile strength of friction welded joints are influenced highly by upset pressure rather than friction time. And it is considered that mixed layer was formed in the Cu adjacent side to the weld interface, W particles included in mixed layer induced fracture in the Cu adjacent side to the weld interface and also, thickness of mixed layer was reduced as upset pressure increase.
A copper-tungsten sintered alloy(Cu-W) has been friction welded to a tough pitch copper in order to investigate the effect of friction pressure on bonding strength and a charicteristic of fracture. The tensile strength of the friction welded joint was increased up to 90% of the Cu base metal under the condition of friction time 1.2 sec, friction pressure 4.5kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and upset pressure 10kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$. From the results of fracture surface analysis, the increase of friction pressure could remarkably decrease the force and the time to be normally acted on weld interface. The W particles which were included in the plastic zone of Cu side could induce fracture adjacent to the weld interface because their existance in Cu induces a decrease in available section area and an increase in notch effect. Therefore, the tensile strength was decreased at high friction pressure (6kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) because the destruction of W was increased by an increase in mechanical force and crack was formed at weld interface.

Friction welding is a very useful joining process to weld metals which have axially symmetric cross section. In this paper, the feasibility of industry application was determined by analyzing the mechanical properties of weld region for a specimen of tube-to-tube shape for excavator hose nipple with friction welding, and optimized welding variables were suggested. In order to accomplish this object, friction heating pressure and friction heating time were selected as the major process variables and the experiment was performed in three levels of each parameter. An acoustic emission(AE) technique was applied to evaluate the optimal friction welding conditions nondestructively. AE parameters of accumulative count and event were analyzed in terms of generating trend of AE signals across the full range of friction weld. The typical waveform and frequency spectrum of AE signals which is generated by friction weld were discussed. From this study the optimal welding variables could be suggested as rotating speed of 1300 rpm, friction heating pressure of 15 MPa, and friction heating time of 10 sec. AE event was a useful parameter to estimate the tensile strength of tube-to tube specimen with friction weld.
Due to increase in demand of stable and long pipelines in natural gas industry, wide range of researches are being performed on automation welding to improved welding quality with respect to weld process parameters in real time measurement. In particular, the coupling between the pipe manufacturing process and location of the weld seam, the measured size of the gap that exists in the weld position and the weld angle depending on whether the movement of molten weld. This is due to absence of controlling welding penetration position, depending on the required size of the angle of the setting. In addition, the optimum welding conditions must be considered while selecting, the correlation between these variables and the systematic correlation has not yet been identified. Therefore, in most welded pipe root-pass weld solely depends on the experience of workers in relation to secure a stable weld quality. In this study, automation welding system is implemented to select a suitable root-pass STT (Surface Tension Transfer) welding method using the optimal welding conditions. To successfully accomplish this objective, there were various welding conditions used for welding experiment to confirm that the assessment required for construction through the pipe and automatic welding process is proposed to optimize this plan.

The conventional welding technique such as shield metal arc welding has been mostly applied to the piping system of the nuclear power plants. It is well known that this welding technique causes the overheating and welding defects due to the large groove angle of weld. On the other hand, the narrow gap welding(NGW) technique has many merits, for instance, the reduction of welding time, the shrinkage of weld and the small deformation of the weld due to the small groove angle and welding bead width comparing with the conventional welds. These characteristics of NGW affect the deformation behavior and the distribution of welding residual stress of NGW, thus it is believed that the residual stress results obtained from conventional welding procedure may not be applied to structural integrity evaluation of NGW. In this paper, the welding residual stress of NGW was predicted using the nonlinear finite element analysis to simulate the thermal and mechanical effects of the NGW. The present results can be used as the important information to perform the flaw evaluation and to improve the weld procedure of NGW.

Thick-shell welding for super-sized oil storage tanks is currently done manually, which causes deterioration in quality and a lack of uniformity due to frequent rewelding. The limitations of the external environment must also be considered for manual welding. This paper describes the development of a carriage system for automatic vertical welding to increase reliability, reduce cost, and enhance productivity. The system consists of a welding platform, carriage device, and control unit, which were conceptually designed according to design specifications and manufactured with modular parts. In addition, the structure was analyzed for safety and to predict design problems in advance, and the results are reflected in reviewing the design. To evaluate the performance of the system, a tensile test, bending test, and weld time test were carried out, and the results were satisfactory. The time required for automatic weld was greatly improved by more than 87%, compared to the manual welding time.
This study was performed to optimize friction welding conditions of Cr-Mo steel bars used for hydraulic of pneumatic valve spools and to realize the real-time evaluation of weld quality by acoustic emission method. SNCM220, SCM435, SCAM645, and SCM415 steel bars were tested to find optimum conditions of friction welding. Auantitative equations which exhibit the relations of tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area and energy absorption with friction heating time were obtained by the experiment. Acoustic emission was also performed in the friction weldig process, and the real-time evaluation was enabled to find the optimum range of weld strength. Finally, the strength and toughness of welded joints were interpreted by the sem analysis of tensile fracture surfaces.
This paper presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the tensile strength and other properties of the bar-to-bar welded joints of O.D. 16mm shaft(SM40C) as well as the various welding variables. And this is a new approach which attempts finally to develop real-time quality monitoring system for friction welding. The results lead to a practical possibility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro structural defects.
