Effect of in-situ vibration on the properties of A-grade steel SMA weldment has been investigated. Welding was performed on the steel fixed at the experimental jig under the mechanical vibration of a given frequency. The applied frequency varied from 39 to 43.5 Hz (harmonic frequency). For weldments formed under the vibration with a sub-harmonic frequency, both the columnar width of the weld metal and the prior austenite grain size of the HAZ near the fusion line clearly decreased. This indicates that the vibration increase the cooling rate after welding. Vibration effect was also found at the weld metal formed at the center region of the weldment. The weld metal showed liner microstructure both in columnar zone and in equiaxed zone with thinner grain boundary ferrite. However mechanical properties of the weld metal did not exactly follow the microstructural changes developed under the vibration. The weld metal formed under the vibration revealed higher yield and tensile strength but lower ductility and impact toughness, compared with the conventional weld metal.
The resistance spot welding process has been used for joining the sheet metal in automotive engineering. In the resistance spot welding, the weld quality is very important, because the quality of weld is one of the most important factors to the automobile quality. The size of he molten nugget has been utilized to estimate the weld quality. However, it is not easy to find the weld defects. For weldability estimation, we have to use the nondestructive method such as X-ray or ultrasonic inspection. But these kinds of approaches are not suitable for detecting the defects in real time. The purpose of this study is to develop the real time monitoring of the weld quality in the resistance spot welding. Obtained data were used to estimate weldability using fuzzy algorithm. It is sound that this monitoring and estimation system can be useful to improve the weld quality in the resistance spot welding process and it is possible to estimate the weldability in real time.
Post weld heat treatment(PWHT), at more than 600.deg. C, is essential to remove residual stress and hydrogen in weld HAZ and improve fatigue characteristics. However, residual stress during PWHT is responsible for PWHT embitterment and it promotes precipitation of impurities to grain boundary. In this paper, the effect of stress simulated residual stress on fatigue failure was evaluated by fatigue test, microhardness test and fractograph. The obtained results are summarized as follows; (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of parent and heat treated parent was affected by microstructure due to heat treatment and it depended on stress intensity factor (.DELTA.k). (2) The fatigue strength of weld HAZ was dependent on applied stress during PWHT and da/dN after PWHT was slower than as-weld. (3) Softening amount of weld HAZ was bigger than any other due to PWHT. Hardness value of weld HAZ was affected by heat treatment under the applied stress of 10 $kgf/mm^2$, but beyond 20 $kgf/mm^2$ it was increased by the applied stress rather than heat treatment. (4) Beyond the applied stress of 20 $kgf/mm^2$ during PWHT, intergranular fracture surface was observed and its amount was increased with applied stress during PWHT. (5) Effect of applied stress during PWHT on aspect of fracture surface was larger rather than that on fatigue crack growth behavior.
Effects of friction stir welding parameters such as tool rotation speed and welding speed on the joints properties of 5052 Al alloys were studied in this study. A wide range of friction stir welding conditions could be applied to join 5052 AA alloy without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with a lower heat input. Microstructures near the weld zone showed general weld structures such as stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ). Each zone showed the dynamically recrystallized grain, transient grain and structure similar to base metal's, respectively. Hardness distribution near the weld zone represented a similar value of the base metal under wide welding conditions. However, in case of 800 rpm of tool rotation speed, hardness of the stir zone had a higher value due to the fine grain with lots of dislocation tangle, a higher angle grain boundary and some of Al3Fe particles. Except joints with weld defects, tensile strength and elongation of the joints had values similar to the base metal values and fracture always occurred in the regions approximately 5mm away from the weld center.
For this study, SM45C steel rods using generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by butt-GMAW method. And then it was studied about estimation of fatigue strength and the region of infinite life by Haigh diagram using Goodman's equation. Fatigue strength in weld zone presents highly in order of the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, deposited metal zone, heat affected zone. This result agrees with distribution of hardness in weld zone. Fatigue strength in base metal zone presents highly compared with weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ cycles and $10^6$cycles, but it presents the lowest fatigue strength on the order of heat affected zone in the vicinity of $10^6$cycles. It is the result that the first high compressive residual stress distributed by drawing process of the steel rods is released and the base metal is softened by alternating stresses. The region of infinite life by Haigh diagram presents highly in order of the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, deposited metal zone, heat affected zone. From this results, it is demanded that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected in the region of the lowest infinite life of heat affected zone.
The effects of weld repair on the durability in Al-10%Si-0.3%Mg castings were evaluated. The strength and fracture toughness in fusion zone were higher than those in the base metal by rapid cooling of fusion zone after welding. There were no significant differences between fatigue properties in castings and weld repaired specimen as the results of low cycle fatigue and rotating bending fatigue test. Therefore it was concluded that weld repairing did not have any significant effect on the mechanical properties of castings.
During PWHT, it is well known that residual stress in weld HAZ is one of the reasons for PWHT embitterment. In case of static loading, it was experimentally found that fracture toughness of weld HAZ was dependant upon PWHT conditions. However, the effects of PWHT on fatigue behavior are not clearly verified. Therefore, in this paper, the effects of heating rate PWHT conditions and residual stress simulated in weld HAZ of Cr-Mo steel on fatigue crack propagation behavior were evaluated by fatigue Testing and SEM observation. The obtained results are summarized as follows; 1. Applied stress($10 Kgf/mm^2$) in weld HAZ during PWHT tneded to decrease fatigue strength and to increase fatigue crack growth rate. 2. Applied stress and slow heating rate of 60.deg. C/hr during PWHT contributed to precipitin of impurity elements as well as carbide, which promoted the fatigue crack growth. 3. Fatigue crack growth rate decreased at the heating rate of 220.deg. C/hr in contrast with 600.deg. C/hr and 60.deg. C/hr.
The dynamic resistance monitoring is one of the important issues in that in-process and real time quality assurance of resistance spot weld is needed to increase the product reliability. Secondary dynamic resistance patterns, as a real manner, are hard to adapt those factors in real time and in-plant system. In the present study, a new dynamic resistance detecting method is presented as a practical manner of weld quality assurance at the primary circuit. By the correlation analysis, it is found that the primary dynamic resistance patterns are basically similar to those of the secondary. Various dynamic resistance indices are characterized with the primary curve. And quality of the weld, like the tensile shear strength, is estimated using adaptive neuro-fuzzy estimation system which is consisted of the Sugeno fuzzy algorithm. Through the fuzzy clustering and parameter optimization, real time weld quality assurance system with less efforts is proposed.
A spacer grid assembly, which is an interconnected array of slotted grid straps and is welded at the intersections to form an egg crate structure, is one of the main structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly for pressurized water reactors(PWRs). The spacer grid assembly is structurally required to have enough buckling strength under various kinds of lateral loads acting on the nuclear fuel assembly so as to keep the nuclear fuel assembly straight. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to weld the welding parts carefully and precisely. In this study, weld qualities such as, weld bead size, penetration, spatter, etc. manufactured by various welders were compared and analyzed. Comparison results show that the weld qualities could be improved by selecting the optimal welding condition and also improving the welding technique.
Fiber composite materials are widely used in aerospace industries due to their high specific strength and stiffness. Especially, the increasing use of polymer composite materials for injection of automobile components has led to a considerable interest in the application of stress pattern analysis by thermal emission to these composite materials. Therefore, in this study the microstructure of glass fiber orientation at the parent and weld line of polycarbonate is observed by a light transmission. And we also investigate a stress concentration model of a notch including short glass fibers. Especially the polymer injection weld reorients the fiber to suggest a new method for the evaluation of inhomogeneous deformation.
