  • This study was intended to use for the fatigue test in real structures and offer basic data for optimum welding structure design. To this purpose, we obserded the effect of the size and distance of plug welding hole on the static strength and fatigue life of welding structure under the shear/bending load for the improvement of fatigue life of plug welding joint between S/MBR and C/MBR in the lower structure of large bus. The result below is shown through this study. 1) Static and fatigue strength are strongly influenced by the direction of plug weld hole distributed. 2) Distances and diameters of the distributed holes are little dependent on the static strengths 3) In case of the directions of the distributed plug weld holes are vertical to the loading pin, fatigue life is dependent on distance of the distributed hole. 4) In case of the directions of the distributed plug weld holes are parallel to the loading pin, fatigue life is dependent on distance of the hole diameter.

  • The weldability of resistance spot welding of TRIP1180 steels for automobile components investigated enhance in order to achieve understanding of weld fracture during tensile-shear strength (TSS) test. The main failure modes for spot welds of TRIP1180 steels were nugget pullout and interfacial fracture. The peak load to cause a weld interfacial failure was found to be related to fracture toughness of the weld and the weld diameter. Although interfacial fracture occurred in the spot welded samples, the load-carrying capacity of the weld was high and not significantly affected by the fracture mode. Substantial part of the weld exhibits the characteristic dimple (or elongated dimple) fractures on interfacial fractured surface also, dimple fracture areas were drawmatically increased with heat input which is propotional to the applied weld current. In spite of the high hardness values associated with the martensite microstructures due to high cooling rate. The high load-carrying ability of the weld is directly associated with the area of ductile fracture occurred in weld. Therefore, the judgment of the quality of resistance spot welds in TRIP1180 steels, the load-carrying capacity of the weld should be considered as an important factor than fracture mode.

  • Cold rolled and high strength steel were used for vehicle bodys to satisfy environmental regulation and improve fuel ratio. This paper presented a method far determining the fatigue life of cold rolled steel sheet EZNCEN and high strength steel sheet HS40R spot weldment used in vehicles. We can estimate the fatigue life of the spot weldments from the MSC/FATIGUE using the finite element method. The maximum load is found in the nugget part of both surfaces. The cold rolled steel and the high strength steel showed the maximum stress 746MPa and 730MPa in the effective nugget part when the weld current was 8KA and 7KA, respectively. Also the some weld current of the cold rolled steel and high strength steel is applied, the fatigue life of high strength steel is obtained about four times longer than the cold rolled steel.

  • Fatigue strength of offshore structures or ship structures is significantly decreased due to corrosive environment condition such as sea water and/or coal, crude oil of cargoes, compared to that of on shore structures. In corrosive environment, fatigue strength of structures also depends on characteristics of weld material heat affected zone(HAZ). In this research work, rotary bending fatigue tests of parent material and HAZ of TMCP steel were performed in order to investigate the initiation and propagation of cracks both in air and in NaCl solution. Comparison of fatigue strength In relation with the salinity of NaCl were carried out as well. According to the test results weld material or HAZ of TMCP steel showed higher fatigue strength than that of the parent material. The fatigue strength of TMCP steel decreases drastically in NaCl solution compared to that of in air environment. In particular, more reduced fatigue strength is observed in 1% NaCl solution than in 3% NaCl solution.

  • Inertia friction welding, a relatively recent innovation in the art of joining materials, is a forge-welding process that releases kinetic energy stored in the flywheel as frictional heat when two parts are rubbed together under the right conditions. In a comparatively short time, the process has become a reliable method for joining ferrous, and dissimilar metals. The process is based on thrusting one part, attached to a flywheel and rotating at a relatively high speed, against a stationary part. The contacting surfaces, heated to plastic temperatures, are forged together to produce a reliable, high-strength weld. Welds are made with little or no workpiece preparation and without filler metal or fluxes. However, In order to obtain a good weld, the determination of the optimum weld parameters is an important problem. Especially, because the amount of the flywheel mass will be determined according to the initial rotating velocity values at the constant thrust load, the initial rotating velocity is an important factor to affect a weld character of the inertia-welded IN713C-SAE8630, which is used for the wheel-shafts of turbine rotors or turbochargers, exhausting valves, etc. In this paper, the effects of initial rotational velocity on a weld character of inertia-welded IN713C-SAE8630 was studied through considerations of weld parameters determination, micro-structural observations and tensile tests. The results are as the following: 1) As initial rotating velocity was reduced to 267 FPM, cracks and carbide stringers were completely eliminated in the micro-structure of welded zone. 2) As initial rotating velocity was reduced and flywheel mass was increased correspondingly, the maximum welding temperatures were decreased and the plastic working in the weld zone was increased. 3) As initial rotating velocity was progressively decreased and carbides were decreased, the tensile strengths were increased. 4) And also the fracture location moved out of the weld zone and the tensile tests produced, the failures only in the cast superalloy IN713C which do not extend into the weld area. 5) The proper initial rotating velocity could be determined as about 250 thru 350 FPM for the better weld character.

  • In the automobile industry, in order to increase the fuel efficiency and conform to the safety regulations, it is necessary to make the vehicles as light as possible. Therefore, it is crucial to manufacture dual phase steels, complex phases steels, MS steels, TRIP steels, and TWIP from high strength steels with a tensile strength of 700Mpa or more. In order to apply ultra-high tensile strength steel to the body, the welding process is essential. Resistance spot welding, which is advantageous in terms of its cost, is used in more than 80% of cases in body welding. It is generally accepted that ultra-high tensile strength steel has poor weldability, because its alloy element content is increased to improve its strength. In the case of the resistance spot welding of ultra-high tensile steel, it has been reported that the proper welding condition area is reduced and interfacial fracture and partial interfacial fracture occur in the weld zone. Therefore, research into the welding quality judgment that can predict the defect and quality in real time is being actively conducted. In this study, the dynamic resistance of the weld was monitored using the secondary circuit process variables detected during resistance spot welding, and the factors necessary for the determination of the welding quality were extracted from the dynamic resistance pattern. The correlations between the extracted factors and the weld quality were analyzed and a regression analysis was carried out using highly correlated pendulums. Based on this research, a regression model that can be applied to the field was proposed.

  • In general, discontinuity of metallurgical and structural points of weld zone could decline the fatigue strength. For the lightweight trend, the AHSS application in automotive chassis is in-progress. However, there are few research reports on AHSS welds fatigue strength in especially automotive chassis parts. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of the factors affecting the AHSS welding fatigue strength. As the result, the stress concentration of weld bead is the most important factor for welding fatigue strength. For the enhancement of welding fatigue strength, we focused on reducing the stress concentration of the welding beads. So, we applied and proved the plasma welding process and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) dressing method. It was verified by uniaxial fatigue specimen, fatigue performance increased from 40 to 60% by applying TIG dressing method compared to the conventional GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). These results could be recommended the enhancement of fatigue performance of AHSS.

  • This study deals with the friction welding of SM25C and SCNCrM-2B; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 100MPa, upset pressure of l50MPa, and upset time of 4.0 seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time is 2.0 seconds, the tensile strength of friction welds was 874MPa, which is around as much as 117% of the tensile strength of base metal(SM25C), the bending strength of friction welds was 1,354MPa, which is around as much as 108.9% of the bending strength of base metal(SM25C). 2. At the same condition, the maximum vickers hardness was Hv443 at SCNCrM-2B nearby weld interface, which is higher Hv20 than condition of the friction time 0.5 seconds. 3. The results of microstructure analysis show that the structures of two base materials have fractionated and rearranged along a column due to heating and axial force during friction, which has affected in raising hardness and tensile strength.
