In level set method, material properties are made to change smoothly across an interface of two materials with different properties by introducing an interpolation or smoothing scheme. So far, the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) method has been exclusively adopted in level set method, without complete assessment for its validity. We showed here that the weighted harmonic mean (WHM) method for rate constants of various rate processes, including viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permittivity, gives much more accurate results than the WAM method. The selection of interpolation scheme is particularly important in multi-phase electrohydrodynamic problems in which driving force for fluid flow is electrical force exerted on the phase interface. Our analysis also showed that WHM method for both electrical conductivity and permittivity gives not only more accurate, but also more physically realistic distribution of electrical force at the interface. Our arguments are confirmed by numerical simulations of drop deformation under DC electric field.
In particle-based fluid simulation, applying sudden power to particle raise unnatural flow when wave is breaking. To solve this problem, we have used an linear interpolation technique that interpolate between fluid particle by subdividing the time interval in the previous work. Acceleration vector of the particle with increased pressure in boundary could change smoothly. However, particle looks like flow with viscosity because the number of the minimum samples to interpolate increases. We propose an weighted-interpolation technique to represent the realistic movement of fluid. it is accumulating that has added and assigned different weights to the previous acceleration vector and current one repeatedly. weighted-interpolation technique using less minium samples to flow than linear interpolation, so it can solve the problem which particle looks like flow with viscosity.
The purpose of this study is to assess spatiotemporal variation of coastal water quality according to time and location changes. For this we developed numerical marine trophic index base on four water quality components (chlorophyll, suspended solids, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus) and applied this index to the water quality data measured in the korean coastal zone for the 7-years period from 1997 to 2003. Water quality data are obtained only at selected sites even though they are potentially available at any location. Therefore, in order to estimate spatial variation of coastal water quality, it is necessary to estimate the unknown values at unsampled locations based on observation data. In this study, we used IDW (Inverse Distance Weighted) method to predict water quality components at unmeasured locations and applied marine trophic index to predicted values obtained by IDW interpolation. The results of this study indicate that marine trophic index and spatial interpolation are useful for understanding spatiotemporal characteristics of coastal water quality.

In this paper, we propose an efficient deinterlacing algorithm which is an edge dependent interpolation based on edge direction refinement. The conventional edge dependent interpolation algorithms have a visually better performance than any other Intra-field deinterlacing algorithms. However they are very sensitive to noise due to the failure of estimating edge direction. In order to exactly detect edge direction, our method detects edge direction of around interpolated pixel and refines the edge direction using weighted median filter. Simulation results have shown the efficacy of the proposed method with significant improvement over the previous methods in terms of the objective PSNR quality as well as the subjective image quality.

This study was aimed to visualize the spatial distribution of PM10 data measured at non-uniformly distributed observation sites in South Korea. Different spatial interpolation methods were applied to irregularly distributed PM10 observation data from January, 2019, when the concentration was the highest and in July, 2019, when the concentration was the lowest. Four interpolation methods with different parameters were used: Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), radial base function, and scattered interpolation. Six cases were cross-validated and the normalized root-mean-square error for each case was compared. The results showed that IDW using smoothing-related factors was the most appropriate method, while the OK method was least appropriate. Our results are expected to help users select the proper spatial interpolation method for PM10 data analysis with comparative reliability and effectiveness.
A local point interpolation method (LPIM) is presented for the stress analysis of two-dimensional solids. A local weak form is developed using the weighted residual method locally in two-dimensional solids. The polynomial interpolation, which is based only on a group of arbitrarily distributed nodes, is used to obtain shape functions. The LPIM equations are derived, based on the local weak form and point interpolation. Since the shape functions possess the Kronecker delta function property, the essential boundary condition can be implemented with ease as in the conventional finite element method (FEM). The presented LPIM method is a truly meshless method, as it does not need any element or mesh for both field interpolation and background integration. The implementation procedure is as simple as strong form formulation methods. The LPIM has been coded in FORTRAN. The validity and efficiency of the present LPIM formulation are demonstrated through example problems. It is found that the present LPIM is very easy to implement, and very robust for obtaining displacements and stresses of desired accuracy in solids.

In this paper, we propose a super-resolution algorithm using an adaptive weighted interpolation(AWI) and discrete wavelet transform(DWT). In general, super-resolution algorithms for single-image, probability based operations have been used for searching high-frequency components. Consequently, the complexity of the algorithm is increased and it causes the increase of processing time. In the proposed algorithm, we first find high-frequency sub-bands by using DWT. Then we apply an AWI to the obtained high-frequency sub-bands to make them have the same size as the input image. Now, the interpolated high-frequency sub-bands and input image are properly combined and perform the inverse DWT. For the experiments, we use the down-sampled version of the original image($512{\times}512$) as a test image($256{\times}256$). Through experiment, we confirm the improved efficiency of the proposed algorithm comparing with interpolation algorithms and also save the processing time comparing with the probability based algorithms even with the similar performance.

Error Concealment method for Intra frames in H.264 reconstructs the lost block by computing weighted average value of the boundary pixels of the neighboring blocks; up, bottom, left and right blocks. However a simple average of pixel values of the neighboring blocks for Intra frames in H.264 leads to excessive blurring and degrades the picture quality severely. To solve this problem, in this paper we estimate the dominant edge of lost block using the pixel values of the neighboring blocks and reconstruct the pixel values by choosing adaptive interpolation between directional interpolation and weighted average interpolation considering the result value of the interference function based on statistics. Finally directional interpolation method improves by determining the dominant edge direction considering the relation of the dominent edge and the edges of neighboring blocks. Experiments show improvement of picture quality of about $0.5{\sim}2.0dB$ compared with the method of H.264.
Population data are usually provided at administrative spatial units in Korea, so areal interpolation is needed for fine-grained analysis. This study aims to compare various methods of areal interpolation for population subgroups rather than the total population. We estimated the number of elderly people and single-person households for small areal units from Dong data by the different interpolation methods using 2010 census data of Seoul, and compared the estimates to actual values. As a result, the performance of areal interpolation methods varied between the total population and subgroup populations as well as between different population subgroups. It turned out that the method using GWR (geographically weighted regression) and building type data outperformed other methods for the total population and households. However, the OLS regression method using building type data performed better for the elderly population, and the OLS regression method based on land use data was the most effective for single-person households. Based on these results, spatial distribution of the single elderly was represented at small areal units, and we believe that this approach can contribute to effective implementation of urban policies.

The objective of this study is to decide a spatial interpolation method on temperature data for the suitability analysis of garlic cultivation. In Korea, garlic is the second most cultivated condiment vegetable after red pepper. Nowadays warm-temperate garlic faces potential shift of its arable area according to warmer temperature in the Korean Peninsula, and the change can be drawn with the precise temperature map derived from interpolation on point-measured data. To find the preferable interpolation method in cases of germination and vegetative period of the garlic, different approaches were tested as follows: Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Spline, Ordinary Kriging (OK), and Universal Kriging (UK). As a result, IDW and UK show the lowest root mean square errors as for the germination and vegetative seasons, respectively. However, statistically significant difference was not revealed among the applied methods regarding the germinating period. Eventually this will contribute to mapping the suitable lands for the cultivation of warm-temperate garlic reasonably.
