  • The present paper deals with seasonal variation of ovary weight, number of eggs spawned and carapace width (CW) of Orithyia sinica (Calappidae, Brachyura) based on the samples monthly collected from May to November 1981. Ovary weight of the prematured crabs (CW, 50 mm) was less than 0.5g. Biological minimum size of the female was approximately 55 mm in carapace width. Ovary weight was 0.01-0.5g in the premature stage, 3.0-15.9g in the virgin stage, and 0.2-1.5g in the ovigerous stage. Number of eggs spawned depended on the size of the females, and it ranged from $240{\times}10^2\;to\;1073{\times}10^2(mean\;ca.542{\times}10^2)$. The diameter of eggs spawned was in the range of 547-913 ${\mu}m(mean ca.712{\mu}m).$

  • This study showed that models of energy utilization(EU) developed for grazing cattle in oil palm plantations is valid as the simulated results shows an agreement with actual data of calves and cows body weight changes collected from Brahman x Kedah-Kelantan herd on Pengeli Timor Plantation. Simulation runs on EU models demonstrated that the growth pattern of male and female calves and the weight changes of cows are similar and showed slight variation from the actual data but with no significant difference (p > 0.05). Parameter values such as metabolizability (q), dry matter digestibility(DMD) of herbage and voluntary intake of grazing cattle (VIG) and faecal output/body weight ratio (F) of the animals which were collected from the field are essential in bearing the pattern of body weight changes of the calves and cows in relation to increase in time, physiological status and quality of herbage grazed by these animals in the production system. The EU models is suitable for determining the metabolizable energy requirements and to predict the production of grazing cattle according to quality of the feed on offer.

  • The importance of direct genetic, maternal, heterosis and epistatic effects were examined on post-weaning weight, height, length, girth, fat depth and muscle (ratio of stifle to hip width) with dry and wet season gains in these traits. The breeds used were two pure breeds (Jersey and Limousin), the Limousin${\times}$Jersey $F_1$, and two backcrosses ($F_1{\times}$Jersey dams and $F_1{\times}$Limousin dams). Direct genetic effects were large (p<0.001) for all traits except for length. Jersey maternal effects were large for weight, girth, fat depth and muscle in the post-weaning wet season gains which is an evidence of the impact of Jersey dam on progeny beyond weaning. There were large heterosis effects on fat depth and muscle relative to other traits. Epistatic effects were observed for post-weaning performance in weight, girth, fat depth and muscle. There are indications that there were different genetic effects for post-weaning compared to preweaning growth traits. Thus, it could be hypothesized from this study that different quantitative trait loci (QTL) affect early and late growth in Jersey and Limousin cross cattle breeds. The follow up work will examine the different chromosomal gene effects on pre- and post-weaning growth.

  • The Wastewater from the weight reduction process of polyester is more difficult to be treated biologically than the general wastewater from dyeing and finishing processes in textile industries. Above wastewater shows high pH, high organic strength and wide variation of organic loading. These characteristics are due to TPA and EG resulting from alkaline weight-reduction process and make trouble in the operation of activated sludge process. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop the pretreatment method for the successful operation of treatment process. For the successful pretreatment process, the wastewater from weight-reduction process should be segregated from other wastewater stream and then acidified with concentrated sulfuric acid to precipitate out TPA from DST solution. At the optimum pH of 2. 2, the initial $COD_{cr}$ 60,000mg/l is reduced to 11,500mg/l and the removal efficiency of $COD_{cr}$ is 81.1%. The required amount of sulfuric acid for pretreatment is not greater than the amount for the the existing neutralization process. Moreover, the supernatant of pretreatment process can be reused in acidification of wastewater.

  • Twelve intact and 12 docked Najdi lambs of equal numbers of males and females were utilized in the experiment. All lambs were raised under similar conditions until they attained 40 kg shorn and shrunk body weight. Thereafter, lambs were individually fed ad libitum on a diet formulated to contain 11.20 MJ ME/kg and slaughtered after 60 days feeding period. The results showed that Najdi rams averaged 6.14 kg more total gain (p < .05), required 6.80 kg less feed (p < .05) per kg of gain and produced 3.2 and 3.07 kg more (p < .05) carcass and salable cuts weights over the feeding period than comparable ewes. Body wall thickness and kidney and pelvic fat weight were greater (p < .05) for ewes than for rams; dressing percent, longissimus area and fat thickness were not significantly influenced by sex of lambs. Docked lambs kept for 60 days on feed required 1.80 kg less feed (p < .05) per kg of gain and produced 2.21 kg more (p < .05) salable wholesale cuts weight than intact lambs. Docking was not a significant source of variation for total gain, carcass weight, dressing percent, longissimus dorsi area, body wall thickness and fat thickness.

  • A total of 130 Chinese Meishan piglets were scored for their genotypes at five gene loci and five microsatellite loci. The average gene heterozygosity was 0.3338 and the average microsatellite heterozygosity was 0.2954, and the heterozygosity of the overall ten loci was 0.3146. The data of birth weight (BW) and body weight on day 35 (W35) were collected, average daily gain (ADG) for each individual was computed as the slope from the regression of weight on age. There was no significant correlation between individual heterozygosity and birth weight (p>0.05). Significant regressions were observed between ADG and the heterozygosity of loci (p<0.01). Similar results were observed in W35 and loci heterozygosity (p<0.01). Heterozygosity at these ten loci explained 43.62% of the total variation in ADG and 45.48% in W35. Significant correlations existed not only in the function of gene loci but also in neutral microsatellite loci, so it indicated that associative overdominance affected piglet growth significantly.

  • Hydrophilic poly(acrylonitrile) [PAN] membrane with good molecular weight cut-off characteristics were prepared by using the phase inversion method. Permeability and molecular weight cut-off of the membranes were measured through the ultrafiltration test. On the surface of the PAN support membranes, poly(acrylic acid) [PAA] was deposited by dip-coating. The water permeability of the PAN support membrane had $0.17~31\textrm{mm}^3/m^{2} \cdot s \cdot Pa$, the molecular weight cut-off 42, 000~150, 000. The transport characteristics of the prepared composite membranes were significantly affected by the variation of the support membrane mophology. The permeability of the composite membrane was decreased with increasing molecular weight cut-off of the support membrane, and the separation factor was slightly changed depending on the feed concentration.

  • Natural organic matters(NOMs) are found everywhere such as soil, surface and ground waters and consist of both humic and nonhumic components, and their heterogeneith makes each source unique. This study was carried to evaluate the removal characteristics of NOMs by mixing coagulants and the variation of apparent molecular weight distribution(AMWD) in coagulation process. Ratio of optimum coagulants dosage for removal of DOC and turbidity by mixing coagulants was 1.83 mM F $e^{3+}$/mM $Al^{3+}$. DOC removal increased at lower pH. The pH6 control focused on the removal of organic matters could reduce the amount of coagulant consumption by 2 to 3 times based on the pH8.5 of natural water. The dissolved organic matters in the natural water from the mid-stream of Han River were composed of the low molecular weight(LMW,<1 K) of 59.7%, and the medium and high molecular weight(M.HMW, 1~30 K) of 40.3%, respectively. At pH6, the DOC removal efficiencies of LMW(<1 K) and M.HMW(1~30 K) in coagulation process were 27~35%, 62~72%, respectively. The fraction smaller than 1 K was not eliminated to a noticeable degree, while the fraction of 1~30 K was relatively well removed. In conclustion, mixing coagulants were fairly effective in the removal of natural organic matter.r.

  • The rejection properties of 6 aromatic pesticides were evaluated by a continuous flow system equipped with a hollow fiber NF membrane. Different from the separation experiment of batch cell, the rejection and the removal could be calculated exactly because the concentration of feed, permeate and retentate was separately obtained. The lowest and the highest rejection were found in carbaryl(54.8%) and methoxychlor(99.2%), respectively, and the removals were always shown higher than rejections. This may be caused by some reasons such as the solute adsorption on the membrane, the variation of feed concentration. Although molecular weight, molecular width regarded as solute characteristics and log P(n-octanol/water partition coefficient) as hydrophobicity could be applied to explain the rejection property, these factors should be considered together for better analysis. According to the higher relationship between log B(solute permeability) and molecular weight, it was revealed that the solute separation with this membrane was influenced more by molecular weight.
