A kind of accordion-web RBS connection, "Tubular Web RBS (TW-RBS)" connection is proposed in this research. TW-RBS is made by replacing a part of web with a tube at the desirable location of the beam plastic hinge. This paper presents first a numerical study under cyclic load using ABAQUS finite element software. A test specimen is used for calibration and comparison of numerical results. Obtained results indicated that TW-RBS would reduce contribution of the beam web to the whole moment strength and creates a ductile fuse far from components of the beam-to-column connection. Besides, TW-RBS connection can increase story drift capacity up to 9% in the case of shallow beams which is much more than those stipulated by the current seismic codes. Furthermore, the tubular web like corrugated sheet can improve both the out-of-plane stiffness of the beam longitudinal axis and the flange stability condition due to the smaller width to thickness ratio of the beam flange in the plastic hinge region. Thus, the tubular web in the plastic hinge region improves lateral-torsional buckling stability of the beam as just local buckling of the beam flange at the center of the reduced section was observed during the tests. Also change of direction of strain in arc shape of the tubular web section is smaller than the accordion webs with sharp corners therefore the tubular web provides a better condition in terms of low-cycle fatigue than other accordion web with sharp corners.
When hot-rolled wide flanges are used as vertical compressive or bending member, opening web are often to take a space for equipments of pipe or duct. The Web of hot-rolled wide flange steel with opening may be analyzed as a rectangular plate, subjected to in plane force, and the buckling load is governed by the ultimate force of web. The result of the theory showed close agreement with the result of the finite element analysis. It was also shown that the buckling loads of stiffened opening plates could be larger than those of the plate. The stiffened opening plates for the 4-side simply supported case showed more stiffening effect than the Two Opposite Elastic Supports and Two Other Opposite Simply Supports case. In this study, we proposed the effective opening sizes that buckling loads of stiffened opening plate could be greater than those of the plates.
Cold-formed lipped channel columns (CFLCCs) have been widely used in light gauge steel constructions. The distortional buckling is one of the important buckling modes for CFLCCs and the distortional buckling critical load depends significantly on the rotational restrain stiffness generated by the web to the lipped flange. First, a simplified explicit expression for the rotational restraint stiffness of the lipped flange has been derived. Using the expression, the characteristics of the rotational restraint stiffness of the lipped flange have been investigated. The results show that there is a linear coupling relationship between the applied forces and the rotational restraint stiffness of the lipped flange. Based on the explicit expression of the rotational restraint stiffness of the lipped flange, a simplified analytical formula has been derived which can determine the elastic distortional buckling critical stress of the CFLCCs subjected to axial compression. The simplified analytical formula developed in this study has been shown to be accurate through the comparisons with results from the distortional buckling analyses using the ANSYS finite element software. The developed analytical formula is easy to apply, and can be used directly in practical design and incorporated into future design codes and guidelines.
In this study, the computationally efficient inelastic buckling analysis program is developed to be used as the research tool in finding buckling strength of inelastic members. The program can determine buckling loads and buckled shapes of elastic and inelastic members which failed by flexural, lateral-torsional and/or local buckling. It can analyze singly and doubly symmetric I-shape members. In the program, the web of the member is modeled using the plate element and the flanges are modeled by beam elements. Multilinear isotropic hardening rule and the incremental theory of plasticity are used to simulate the inelastic stress-strain relationship from material tests. The program is verified using theoretical solutions and experimental results. The results from the program show good agreement with those from experiments and theory.

Corrugated steel webs resist only shear force because of the accordion effects. The shear force in the web can cause three different buckling mode: local, global, and interactive shear buckling modes. The shear behavior of the corrugated steel webs have been investigated by several researchers. However, shear buckling behavior of the corrugated webs are not clearly explained yet. And, it lead the conservative design. This paper presents shear strength of trapezoidally corrugated steel webs. A series of the tests were also conducted to verified proposed shear strength. Firstly, local, global, and interactive shear buckling equations provided by previous researchers were rearranged as a simple form considering the profiles of the existing bridges with corrugated steel webs. And, global and interactive shear buckling coefficient, and shear buckling parameter for corrugated webs were suggested in this study. Inelastic buckling strength can be determined from buckling curves based on the proposed shear buckling parameter. From the test results of this study and those of previous researchers, it can be found that suggested shear strength provides good estimation of those of trapezoidally corrugated steel webs.
The cold-formed steel stud, which has been used as a load-bearing member of wall panels for steel houses, poses a significant problem in insulation due to heat bridging of the web. Therefore, some additional thermal insulating materials are required. In order to solve this problem, the cold-formed steel thermal stud with slits in the web was developed. However, estimating the structural strength of thermal studs is very difficult because of the arrangement of perforations. In this paper, an analytical and experimental research on thermal studs is described. Three types of studs with different length, pitch and arrangement of slits were tested to failure. A simple design approach was proposed based on the test results. The proposed method adopted the direct strength method, based on the elastic local and distortional buckling stress of plain studs with equivalent thickness in the web instead of thermal studs. The predictions using the proposed method were compared with test results for verification and the adequacy of the proposed method was confirmed.

A numerical study on required stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener in the webs stiffened with flat plate at one-side of the web was conducted. The longitudinal stiffeners are commonly placed around 0.2D, i.e., 1/5 the web depth due to fabrication convenience although most plate girders for bridges are unsymmetric section. Considering asymmetry of section, aspect ratio of web and the rigidity ratio of longitudinal stiffener(${\gamma}^*$), eigenvalue analysis were performed to evaluate the buckling strength for the webs with a stiffener located at 0.16D~0.24D. Based on the parametric analysis, the required stiffness of the longitudinal stiffener to satisfy the buckling strength specified in AASHTO LRFD specifications was presented.
The underlying advantages of using thin-walled corrugatedwebs instead of plate girders with stiffeners are the elimination of instability problems associated with buckling of the thin-walled flat plate, and elimination of the need for transverse stiffeners, which alsoresults in economic advantages. This paper focuses on two aspects related to the structural design technique forsinusoidal corrugated web steel beams, and the optimum design of the beams using real-value genetic algorithms. The structural design process and design variables used in this optimization werecomposed with EN 1993-1-5, DASt-R015 standard and Pasternak et al. (2004), and the valid design capacity of shear buckling of the standards were compared. For the optimum structural design, the objective function, presented as the fullweight of the sinusoidal corrugated web beams, and the slenderness, member forces, and maximum deflection of the beam, were considered constraints. Finally, the simple beam under the uniform load was adopted as a numerical example, and the effective probability parameters of the genetic operators were considered to find the global minimum point.
There are many restrictions in the application of high-strength HSSs, including yield strength and yield ratio for the 600-MPa steel. The AISC and Canadian codes recommend that the yield strength and yield ratio of HSS members be 360 MPa and 80%, respectively. It is important to understand the true buckling behaviors of HSSs using high-strength steel at the limit states. There are many experimental data regarding the rectangular HSSs, and the circular ones are not enough for high-strength steel. Therefore, this study was conducted to create a better understanding of the buckling behaviors of the 600- and 400-MPa steels based on the results of the finite-element analysis that was done before the experiment. To understand the structural behaviors of the aforementioned steels, the width-to-thickness ratios, the angle of the web members, the yield strength, and the gap of the web members were selected as the main parameters in this study, and ABAQUS, a general finite-element program, was used.As a result, the compression web member reached elastic buckling in the 600-MPa steel and inelastic buckling in the 400-MPa steel. A brittle fracture occurred in the case where the yield ratio was greater than 80%. At the same time, it was found that the limit strength determined via FEM analysis had a higher value compared to the code evaluation with the variation of the width-to-thickness ratio in the main code member. The change in the connection load in high-strength steels was not identified by the other factors.
The upper chords in half-through truss bridges are prone to buckling due to a lack of the upper transverse connections. Taking into account geometric and material nonlinearity, nonlinear finite-element analysis of a simple supported truss bridge was carried out to exhibit effects of different types of initial imperfections. A half-wave of initial imperfection was proved to be effective in the nonlinear buckling analysis. And a parameter analysis of initial imperfections was also conducted to reveal that the upper chords have the greatest impact on the buckling, followed by the bottom chords, vertical and diagonal web members. Yet initial imperfections of transverse beams have almost no effect on the buckling. Moreover, using influence surface method, the combinatorial effects of initial imperfections were compared to demonstrate that initial imperfections of the upper chords play a leading role. Furthermore, the equivalent effective length coefficients of the upper chord were derived to be 0.2~0.28 by different methods, which implies vertical and diagonal web members still provide effective constraints for the upper chord despite a lack of the upper transverse connections between the two upper chords. Therefore, the geometrical and material nonlinear finite-element method is effective in the buckling analysis due to its higher precision. Based on nonlinear analysis and installation deviations of members, initial imperfection of l/500 is recommended in the nonlinear analysis of half-through truss bridges without initial imperfection investigation.
