There are some cases which require to grasp the abrasion resistance property in the fields of the high-technology to be required the high specific strength and modulus. In this study, wear test with the various test temperature and velocity were performed in the SiCw/A16061 composite and A16061 matrix using the wear test machine of the ring-on-disc type. As the results, the friction and wear properties by various test temperature and velocity were examined. The worn surface has observed by scanning electron microscope in order to examine the wear mechanism.

To investigate sliding friction and wear behaviors of WC-Co/WC-Co pairs containing different WC grain sizes, the ball-on-disc test in air were carried out, where WC grain sizes a $0.5\;{\mu}m$ (F.G.) and $1.5\;{\mu}m$ (C.G.). The wear volume of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/C.G. disc is larger than that of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/F.G. disc due to higher friction coefficient, and the surfaces after wear test are richer in oxygen compared to those before test. Furthermore, the wear debris, which is composed of nona-scale grain, after the wear test are remarkably richer in oxygen than to those before test.

Analytically induced wear mechanism of elastic body under Hertzian contact is applied in acutual wear test of ceramics. There are two types of wear in ceramics, a large scale wear and a small scale wear. The large scale wear is commensurable with Hertzian contact area and the small scale wear with real contact area. Nondimensional parameter, S$_{c}$, is introduced and fully examined to estimate or predict wear rate of ceramics. Ceramic wear for S$_{c}$.leq.0.8 is in small scale wear and for S$_{c}$;geq.1.6 in large scale wear. wear.

The wear test has been performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of steam generator (SG) tube materials against ferritic stainless steel in water environment. The wear rates of SG tube materials depend on the change of mechanical properties between contact surfaces during wear test. From the subsurface hardness test, Inconel 690 is more work-hardened than Inconel 600 even though these materials have similar hardness values before the wear test. Main cause is due to the difference of stacking fault energy with the chromium content. In water environment, wear mechanism is closely related with the continuous formation and fracture of deformation layers at the contact surfaces.

SMF9060 material is a Fe-based powder sintered alloy that is used for several automobile components such as Synchronize Hub, oil pump and transmission. These components are required excellent wear resistance and durability. In this study, we have performed a dry wear test at the ambient air and Ar gas conditions in the room temperature, and a lubricant wear test at the room temperature and engine oil temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. The amount of wear volume and coefficient friction are measured by a Profilometer and a Ball on disk type wear tester. The wear volume in Ar gas condition was a little higher than that in the ambient air condition. However the wear volume in the lubricant wear condition was much lower than in the dry wear condition. XRD analysis of the debris in Ar gas condition showed that the oxide film was not formed.

The sliding wear behaviors of Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel rod were investigated using two support springs with convex and concave shapes in room temperature air and water. The main focus is to compare the wear behavior of various test variables such as slip amplitude, environment, contact contours with different spring shape and a number of cycles. The results indicated that wear volume and maximum wear depth increased with slip amplitude in both air and water, but their trends tended to change according to the spring shapes and test environments. In air condition, the wear volume was controlled by wear debris behavior generated on worn surface. As a result, final wear volume and maximum wear depth decreased if a ratio of protruded wear volume to worn area $(D_p)$ would be saturated to specific value. This is because wear particle layer could accommodate large strain by accumulating and transforming wear particle layer. However, in water condition, metal-to metal contact was more dominant and wear volume was greatly affected by changed mechanical behavior between contact surfaces since wear debris should be generated after repeated plastic deformation and fracture. After wear test, worn surfaces were examined using optical microscope and SEM and details of wear mechanism were discussed using a ratio of wear volume to worn area $(D_e)$ at each test condition.
The damage of cam/tappet surface is one of the major reasons for energy loss in an I.C. engine. High friction causes the accelerated wear of the cam/tappet surfaces which in turn changes the valve opening/closing timing. During the accelerated test evidence of both rolling fatigue and sliding abrasive wear could be found. Based on the results of the accelerated test, a scheme was devised to decrease tappet wear. Wear reduction of the tappet was achieved by using undulated surface topography in the tappet center region. The wear reduction is achieved by trapping of the wear particles in the undulations as well as by increasing the supply of lubricant to the sliding interface.

Surface hardening of plain carbon steel (SM45C) by Laser are usually much finer and stronger than those of the base metals. The present study was under taken to investigate the wear resistance and a processing parameters such as, power density, pulse width, defocusing distance, and molten depth for surface modification of plain carbon steel. The wear test was carried out under experimental condition using the wear test device, and in which the annular surfaces of wear test specimens as well as mating specimen of alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) was rubbed in dry sliding condition. It is shown that molten depth and width depend on defocusing distance. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was much in lower speed range below 0.2m/sec and in higher speed range above 0.7m/sec, but wear loss was little in intermediate speed range. It depends on oxidation speed and wear speed.
Nano-wear and friction of carbon overcoated laser-textured and mechanically-textured computer hard disk were characterised after contact start/stop (CSS) wear test. Various analytical and mechanical testing techniques were employed to study the changes in topography, roughness, chemical elements, mechanical properties and friction characteristics of the coating arising from the contact start/stop wear test These techniques include: the atomic force microscopy (AFM), the continuous nano-indentation test, the nano-scratch test, the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and the auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was shown that the surface roughness of the laser-textured (LT) bump and mechanically textured (MT) Bone was reduced approximately am and 7nm, respectively, after the CSS wear test. The elastic modulus and hardness values increased after the CSS test, indicating straining hardening of the top coating layer, A critical load was also identified fer adhesion failure between the magnetic layer and the Ni-P layer, The TOF-SIMS analysis also revealed some reduction in the intensity of C and $C_2$$F_59$, confirming the wear of lubricant elements on the coating surface.

The minimization of valve and seat insert wear is a critical factor in the pursuit of engine performance improvement. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed a new simulator, which can generate and control high temperatures up to $900^{\circ}C$ and various speeds up to 80Hz during motion, just like an actual engine. The wear simulator is considered to be a valid simulation of the engine valve and seat insert wear process with various speeds during engine activity. The objective of this work focuses on the different degrees of wear from two different test speeds (10Hz & 25Hz). For this study, the temperature of the outer surface of the seat insert was controlled at $350^{\circ}C$, the cycle number was 2.1$\times$106, and the test load was 1960N. The wear depth and surface roughness were measured before and after the testing using a confocal laser scanner. It was found that a higher speed (25Hz) causes more wear than a lower speed (10Hz) under identical test conditions (temperature, cycle number and test load). In the wear mechanism adhesive wear, shear strain and abrasive wear could be observed.
