  • PURPOSE. This study was conducted to evaluate clinical validity of a zirconia full-coverage crown by comparing zirconia's wear capacity over antagonistic teeth with that of feldspathic dental porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The subject groups were divided into three groups: the polished feldspathic dental porcelain group (Group 1), the polished zirconia group (Group 2), and the polished zirconia with glazing group (Group 3). Twenty specimens were prepared from each group. Each procedure such as plasticity, condensation, and glazing was conducted according to the manufacturer's manual. A wear test was conducted with 240,000 chewing cycles using a dual-axis chewing simulator. The degree of wear of the antagonistic teeth was calculated by measuring the volume loss using a three-dimensional profiling system and ANSUR 3D software. The statistical significance of the measured degree of wear was tested with a significant level of 5% using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey test. RESULTS. The degrees of wear of the antagonistic teeth were $0.119{\pm}0.059\;mm^3$ in Group 1, $0.078{\pm}0.063\;mm^3$ in Group 3, and $0.031{\pm}0.033\;mm^3$ in Group 2. Statistical significance was found between Group 1 and Groups 2 and between Group 2 and 3, whereas no statistical significance was found between Group 1 and Group 3. CONCLUSION. Despite the limitations of this study on the evaluation of antagonistic teeth wear, the degree of antagonistic tooth wear was less in zirconia than feldspathic dental porcelain, representing that the zirconia may be more beneficial in terms of antagonistic tooth wear.

  • The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the influence of hardness of tool materials on wear resistance in the sheet metal forming process. Punches used in the wear test were made of STD-11 and K340 tool material, and the tempering temperature was set to 530℃ and 500℃, respectively, to control the hardness of the tool materials. The punches mimic the shape of stamping tool of automotive body component to reflect its plastic deformation, and are designed to concentrate wear on the curvature region of punches. Progressive die and coil sheet were used to save time, cost, and raw sheet materials. By quantitatively measuring the wear depth of the punches, the wear behavior and mechanism of the punches were investigated, and characteristics of hardness and wear resistance according to tool materials and tempering temperatures were evaluated. Testing results indicate that the punch made of K340 tool steel with higher hardness had better wear resistance than that of STD-11 tool steel, and the hardness and wear resistance of tool steel were significantly impacted by the tempering temperature.

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces, with a focus on two aspects: contact angle measurement and self-cleaning-performance analysis. Superhydrophobic copper and aluminum surfaces are fabricated using the immersion method and subjected to a rolling wear test, in which a 2 kg weight is placed on a rolling tester, under loaded conditions. To evaluate their durability, the contact angles of the specimens are measured for each cycle. In addition, the surface deformation of the specimens before and after the test is analyzed through SEM imaging and EDS mapping. The degradation of the self-cleaning performance is evaluated before and after the wear test. The results show that superhydrophobic aluminum is approximately 4.5 times more durable than superhydrophobic copper; the copper and aluminum specimens could endure 21,000 and 4,300 cycles of wear, respectively. The results of the self-cleaning test demonstrate that superhydrophobic aluminum is superior to superhydrophobic copper. After the wear test, the self-cleaning rates of the copper and aluminum specimens decrease to 72.7% and 83.4%, respectively. The relatively minor decrease in the self-cleaning rate of the aluminum specimen, despite the large number of wear cycles, confirms that the superhydrophobic aluminum specimen is more durable than its copper counterpart. This study is expected to aid in evaluating the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces in the future owing to the advantage of performing wear tests on superhydrophobic surfaces without damaging the surface coating.

  • Evaluation of electroplated gold has been carried out to obtain the data base for electrical, mechanical and environmental properties for telecommunication component applications. Gold plating was performed to a various thickness of $0.1\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.$25\mu\textrm{m}$ after Ni plating of $3\mu\textrm{m}$ on C52100 bronze. Electrical properties were evaluated by measuring contact resistance using 4-wire method under static contact and dynamic contact during wear. Reciprocating wear test was performed to study the wear behavior as well as failure of gold contacts. Environmental characteristics were evaluated by using salt spray testing and SO2 test. Hardness of soft gold film was measured to be 53KHN under 5g load. Friction coefficient was initially obtained to be 0.15 and 0.25 under 100g and 200g loads respectively, and then raised up to 0.8 with increasing reciprocating wear cycles. Static contact resistance was 2 to 3m$\Omega$ regardless of gold film thickness while drastic changes of contact resistance were occured upon stripping of the gold film during wear. The lifetime of contact wear showing stable contact resistance increased up to 6 times for $1\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness compared to that of$ 0.1\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness under 100g load. All gold plating appeared to be stable under salt atmosphere while only the gold plating over 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ was stable under SO2 atmosphere.

  • The wear behavior of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$deposited on casted aluminum alloy (ASTM A356) by APS (Air Plasma Spray) against SiC ball has been investigated in this work. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2$O$_3$coating(APS). $Al_2$O$_3$-40%TiO$_2$coating indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that voids and pores of coating surface resulted in the generation of cracks, and the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tension and compression under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. The crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.

  • Door guide rail is the core part which guides window when it moves up and down. But when the method of grease lubrication in the core has been used for a long times, its lubrication performance has been weakened. Therefore the method of the solid lubrication such as teflon(PTFE) coating in the rail has been studied to be increased the performance in these days. In this study the friction wear characteristic the surface with teflon coating of door guide rail for automobile has been researched. In 1, 20 Hz frequency friction wear tests the friction coefficient are below 0.188 and 0.213. In indicate test the wear depth is very slight. Therefore the durability to the friction wear in the surface with teflon coating of door guide rail is good. In addition to, the result of this study can make efficient use to a basic study to develop method of test evaluation to door guide rail surface grade. Especially this study will contribute to improve the quality of automobile parts.

  • Objectives: Patients with excessive tooth wear should first be diagnosed for the etiology of the tooth wear. Causes of tooth wear include bruxism, clenching, and taking medications for systemic diseases. After identifying the cause of tooth attrition, the final prosthesis should be restored with an appropriate vertical dimension. Methods: A 79-year-old man with worn out teeth desired a whole dental treatment. He was on medications for high blood pressure and asthma. The treatment proceeded with a consultation with a medical doctor. The medications for asthma evoked multiple teeth wear and a loss of the vertical dimension. After recovery of 3 mm of vertical dimension, 2 months of evaluation was followed by an interim prosthesis. Results: The increased vertical dimension caused no problem in function and esthetics, and the final restoration was performed with a full monolithic zirconia crown. Group function, adequate anterior guidance, and the occlusal plane were determined. Conclusions: After the final restoration, the patient was both esthetically and functionally satisfied, and a night guard splint was delivered to prevent prosthesis fracture. The patient was informed about the potential tooth wear associated with asthma drugs and educated to visit the clinic regularly.

  • The application of UHSS sheet is being expanded up to 50% to reduce the weight of automobiles and improve safety. However, due to the high strength and low elongation of the ultra-high tensile strength steel sheet, product defects such as spring back and mold defects such as cracks and chippings also occur. In this study, Pin/Ring on Disc and Spiral wear tests were conducted to evaluate the durability of Ti/Cr-coated molds for forming 1.2GPa grade UHSS sheets. Component analysis and thickness were measured for each coating layer, and hardness and adhesion were investigated to determine mechanical properties. Combining the results of various wear tests, it was found that the TiAlN coating had the best wear and sticking resistance.

  • Between diaphragms made of stainless steel (SUS), which is the main component of a hydrogen gas compressor, micro-slip occurs owing to repeated bending, resulting in scratches on the surface. The surface scratch of the compressor part is a problem with airtightness, which reduces the efficiency of the compressor; in severe cases, damage is a possibility. In this study, the changes in friction and wear characteristics due to the surface polishing of SUS and carbon-based solid lubricant films (graphene and CNT) were analyzed. Bare SUS, polished SUS, graphene film, and CNT film specimens were prepared. The surface roughness of the SUS was significantly reduced by surface polishing but increased by carbon-based solid lubricating films. In contrast, the friction coefficient maintained a similar value after surface polishing but was significantly reduced by the carbon-based solid lubricant films. In particular, the graphene film exhibited the lowest initial friction coefficient, while the CNT film exhibited the lowest overall average friction coefficient. Regarding the wear rate, polished SUS exhibited the lowest value, but the surface condition of the wear track showed that the carbon-based solid lubricating films were relatively less damaged. Although the wear rate measured was largely attributed to the solid lubricating film peeling off, the SUS surface under the film was considered protected.

  • This research investigated the effects of cool touch fabrics on thermo-regulating physical properties and subjective evaluation using a 3D fitted women's T-shirts in wear test. Qmax, clothing microclimate, microclimate wettedness, thermogram and subjective vote were observed during rest-right after an exercise-rest protocol. As a result, there was no single determining physical variable to explain the reasons of cool sensations of T-shirts made of cool touch fabric across the entire protocol. Qmax could partly predict a wear sensation at the initial stage when only insensible perspiration was presented. Simultaneous observation of temperature/humidity gradient understand from the inside to the outside of the clothing layer or microclimate wettedness calculated using vapor pressure were helpful to figure out the performance of cool touch fabric, especially at the later stage of the protocol when sweating was excessive. It was especially difficult to connect thermo-regulating physical variables to the subjective evaluation during transient conditions such as 'right after exercise' stage. It is necessary to measure the amount of heat and moisture transferred from the skin to the outside of clothing along with the physical properties measured in this study to understand the detailed mechanisms of why a cool sensation is evoked from tight fitting T-shirts made of newly developed cool touch fabrics.
