  • Purpose: The purpose is to test and evaluate the physical properties of commonly used temporary restoration materials and newly emerged materials. Materials and Methods: Four groups of polymer materials were evaluated: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) 2 groups, Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Polycarbonate. Four physical properties were tested: surface hardness, bending strength, abrasion resistance during wear, wear behavior. The 3-axis bending strength and Vickers hardness test were measured using a universal testing machines respectively. The microstructure was observed with a scanning electron microscope and weight comparison was evaluated after 100,000 chewing tests using a chewing simulator. Kruskal wallis test was performed to evaluate statistical significance. Results: The four groups showed the highest flexural strength and Vickers hardness of PEEK, followed by PC, PMMA-H, PMMA-T. Microstructure observation also showed the least surface roughness in the PEEK group, followed by PC, PMMA-H, PMMA-T. Conclusion: PC is considered to have sufficient mechanical properties that can be applied to the manufacture of temporary teeth. However, further studies, such as biocompatibility, are considered to be necessary for practical clinical applications.

  • Induction hardening has been used to improve the torsional strength and characteristics of wear for axle shaft that is used to transmit driving torque from the differential to the wheel in automobiles. After the rapid heating and cooling processes of induction hardening are carried out, the shaft has residual stress and material properties change; this affects the allowable transmitted torque. The objective of this study is to predict the distribution of residual stress and estimate the torsional strength of induction-hardened axle shafts with residual stress. In this study, the finite element method is used to study the thermomechanical behavior of the material, and the results are compared with experimental results. The results indicate that the torsional strength of the axle shaft depends on the surface hardening depth and distribution of residual stress.

  • The metal matrix composites(MMC) are currently receiving a great deal of attention. These composites possess exellent mechanical and physical properties such as modulus, strength, wear resistance and thermal stability, which make them very attractive for use in automotive piston. In this study, $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$(15%) composites are fabricated by the squeeze casting method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and ductility are performed at room and elevated temperature($250^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$), respectively. Through thermomechanical analyser, thermal expansion coefficient of $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$ composites are conducted for ranging from room temperature to ($400^{\circ}C$.And bending fatigue tests are also performed by the rotary bending machine at room temperature. The tensile strength and elastic modulus have been improved up to 38% and 35% by the addition of the reinforcements, respectively. Thermal expansion coefficients of MMCs which is located normal and parralel to the applied pressure are showed slightly different less than 10%. Fatigue strengh of the composite was improved by about 20% compared with that of unreinforced Al alloy. The results of this study will be used to understand the basic fracture behavior of MMCs and eventually to expand the applocation of MMCs as a machine parts undertaken various loadings.

  • Objectives: Nail salon owners in New York City (NYC) are required to provide their workers with gloves and it is their responsibility to maintain healthy, safe working spaces for their employees. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency with which nail salon workers wear protective gloves. Methods: A Freedom of Information Law request was submitted to New York Department of State's Division of Licensing Services for a full list of nail salons in Manhattan, NYC. A sample population of 800 nail salons was identified and a simple random sample (without replacement) of 30% (n=240) was selected using a random number generator. Researchers visited each nail salon from October to December of 2015, posing as a potential customer to determine if nail salon workers were wearing gloves. Results: Among the 169 salons in which one or more workers was observed providng services, a total of 562 workers were observed. For 149 salons, in which one or more worker was observed providing services, none of the workers were wearing gloves. In contrast, in six of the salons observed, in which one or more workers was providing services, all of the workers (1 in 2 sites, 2 in 1 site, 3 in 2 sites, and 4 in 1 site) were wearing gloves. Almost three-quarters of the total number of workers observed (n=415, 73.8%) were not wearing gloves. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that, despite recent media attention and legislation, the majority of nail salon workers we observed were not wearing protective gloves when providing services.

  • Frictional behavior of three automotive friction materials (brake pads) containing different amounts of antimony trisulfide ($Sb_2S_3$) and zirconium silicate ($ZRSiO_4$) were investigated using a front brake system. The friction materials were tested on a brake dynamometer (dyno) with gray cast iron rotors. The dynamometer(dyno) test simulated the dragging of a ehicle maintaining 70 km/h and vehicle stops from 100 km/h using 20 different combinations of initial brake temperature (IBT) and input pressure (IP). The results showed a strong influence of the relative amount of $Sb_2S_3$ and $ZrSiO_4$ in friction materials on friction characteristics. Friction stability was improved with the higher concentration of $Sb_2S_3$ in the friction material. Torque variation during drag cycle was increased with an increase of the $ZrSiO_4$ concentration in the friction material. Average friction coefficient and the wear rate of the friction material increased by using more aggressive friction materials containing more $ZrSiO_4$ and less $Sb_2S_3$. Generation of the disk thickness variation (DTV) increased when friction materials with higher concentration of $ZrSiO_4$ were used Careful examination of DTV change showed that aggressiveness of the friction material played an important role in determining torque variation.

  • This paper investigates the stick-slip characteristic of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) between an aluminum plate and the surface of the MRE. MRE is a smart material and it can change its mechanical behavior with the interior iron particles under the influence of an applied magnetic field. Stick-slip is a movement of two surfaces relative to each other that proceeds as a series of jerks caused by alternate sticking from friction and sliding when the friction is overcome by an applied force. This special tribology phenomenon can lead to unnecessary wear, vibration, noise, and reduced service life of work piece. The stick-slip phenomenon is avoided as far as possible in the field of mechanical engineering. As this phenomenon is a function of material property, applied load, and velocity, it can be controlled using the characteristics of MRE. MRE as a soft smart material, whose mechanical properties such as modulus and stiffness can be changed via the strength of an external magnetic field, has been widely studied as a prospective replacement for general rubber in the mechanical domain. In this study, friction force is measured under different loads, speed, and magnetic field strength. From the test results, it is confirmed that the stick-slip phenomenon can be minimized under optimum conditions and can be applied in various mechanical components.

  • In this work, AlON-$Al_2O_3$ coatings were prepared on Al2021 alloy by the electrolytic plasma processing (EPP) method. The experimental electrolytes include: 2 g/l NaOH as the electrolytic conductive agent, 10 g/l $Na_2AlO_2$ as the alumina formative agent, and 0.5 g/l $NaNO_2$, $NaNO_3$, and $NH_4NO_3$ as the nitride inducing agents. The effects of different nitrogen inducing agents were studied by a combined compositional and structural analyses of the ceramic coatings carried out by Xray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the specimens EPP-treated at room temperature for 15 min under a hybrid voltage of 260 DC along with an AC 50 Hz power supply (200 V). Microhardness tests and wear tests were carried out to correlate the evolution of the microstructure and the resulting mechanical properties. Potentiodynamic polarizations and immersion corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5wt% NaCl water solutions under static conditions in order to evaluate the corrosion behavior of the coated samples. The results demonstrate that $NaNO_2$ is proven to be a good nitrogen inducing agent to produce high quality AlON-$Al_2O_3$ ceramic coatings.

  • Metal matrix composites had generated a lot of interest in recent times because of significant in specific properties. It was also highlighted as the materials of frontier industry because strength, heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant were superiored. In this study the strength properties of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}/AC4CH$ were represented mixing the binder of $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$. It was also fabricated by squeeze casting. $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}/AC4CH$ was fabricated at the melt temperature of $760^{\circ}C$ the perform temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and mold temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 83.4MPa and observed SEM. Fatigue crack growth rate tests on compact tension specimen(half-size) of thickness 12.5mm were conducted by using sinusoidal waveform. Compact tension specimens(half-size) were used and fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ were analyzed concerning to the R value of 0.1 and 0.05. In order to find out the value of ${\Delta}K$, load amplitude constant method was applied by the standard fatigue testing method describes in ASTM E647-95a. As the results of this study, Fatigue crack growth rate increased with in creasing the load ratio, Consequently, At equivalent stress intensity factors, the fatigue crack growth rates in MMC were faster than those of AC4CH alloy. then the fatigue life and the fatigue crack growth rate was investigated using scanning election microscopy(SEM)

  • With the development of modern society, not only have the Internet and e-commerce been progressed but they also made 'consumption patten' diverse. Despite the internet clothing market growth, there is critical a disadvantage, which is consumers is not able to wear the products presented via online pictures. Thus, pictures on the internet are the only information customers can get, which has caused consciousness on the importance of dealing with 'customer review'. In spite of the fact that 'customer review' has undeniably evolved to be one of customers' essential requisites, the research on this subject is very limited. Until now, the studies on the internet shopping consumers' behavior mostly has to do with the features of 'customer review' such as 'a sense of exaggeration', 'usability', 'duality', 'purity', 'professionalism', 'reliability', and the 'similarity', etc.) Therefore, this study categorizes the characteristics of online shopping reviews to 'the number of reviews', 'the article-length', 'the existence of photos', 'the rewards for reviews', 'the contents of the reviews' and 'the freshness of the reviews' and reviews the impact of an features of 'customers' reviews' affecting the internet shopping sales promotion. Moreover, it is to contribute to the marketing strategies of a shopping mall by analyzing consumers' 'purchasing satisfaction', 'the intention of repurchasing', and 'the factors of viral marketing'.
