The sliding wear behavior of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was examined on a novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite material and conventional alumina and zirconia ceramics used for femoral head in total hip joint replacement. The wear of UHMWPE pins against these ceramic disks was evaluated by performing linear reciprocal sliding and repeat pass rotational sliding tests for one million cycles in bovine serum. The weight loss of polyethylene against the novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina composite disks was much less than those against conventional ceramics for all tests. The mean weight loss of the polyethylene pins was more io the linear reciprocal sliding test than in the repeal pass rotational sliding lest for all kinds of disk materials. Neither the coherent transfer film nor the surface damage was observed on the surface of the novel zirconia/alumina composite disks during the test. The observed r,'stilts indicated that the wear of the polyethylene was closely related to contacting materials and kinematic motions. In conclusion, the novel zirconia/alumina composite leads the least wear of polyethylene among the tested ceramics and demonstrates the potential as lhe alternative materials for femoral head in total hip joint replacement.
In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.
Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials containing different metallic fibers rubbing against Al-MMC and cast iron disk specimens have been studied. Friction materials containing aluminum, copper or low steel carbon fiber were tested. Friction tests were composed of three different phases to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, speed, and drag time. The results showed that the friction material containing Al fibers has lower friction force and wear amount than the others with Cu or Steel fiber. On the other hand, the wear of friction material was severe in the case of using Al-MMC rotors. These results showed that the thermal decomposition of solid lubricants (and organic components), formation of transfer layer, and SiC particles in the AI-MMC rotor play crucial roles in determining the friction characteristics.
The running-in behaviour of the metal carbon coating (WC/C) was evaluated with regard to its applicability as wear-resistant coating for key components in engines. Reciprocating wear tests under lubricated condition employing an oscillating friction wear tester were performed to investigate the tribological behaviors of the coatings in ambient environment. Confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe worn surfaces and the wear scars on the steel balls. Elemental composition of the coating and worn surfaces were characterized using Auger electron spectroscopy. The friction behavior of WC/C coating was comparable to common carbon-based coatings. Thin tribofilm was formed on the worn surface of the steel ball due to material transfer and tribochemical reaction whereas there was no evidence of tribofilm generation on the coating surface. indicating the chemical innertness of WC/C coating.
This study presents the wear characteristics of Ti alloys (Pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) fabricated by centrifugal precision casting in an Ohara dental titanium casting machine. It was found that the hardness of the surface region is higher than that of the interior region. It is considered that the oxygen adsorption in the surface region during casting, leads to the interstitial solid solution hardening. Wear resistance incerases in the order of pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys. The interior hardness value increases in the same order. The specific wear rate increases with applied load and increases monotonously with sliding speed. The Fe transfer from the counterpart material was observed on the worn surface of the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy. Oxidative wear occurs at low sliding speeds and mechanical fracture wear occurs at high sliding speeds.
Atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy (AFM/FFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales, ranging from atomic and molecular to microscales. These techniques have been used to study surface roughness, adhesion, friction, scratching/wear, indentation, detection of material transfer, and boundary lubrication and for nanofabrication/nanomachining purposes. Micro/nanotribological studies of single-crystal silicon, natural diamond, magnetic media (magnetic tapes and disks) and magnetic heads have been conducted. Commonly measured roughness parameters are found to be scale dependent, requiring the need of scale-independent fractal parameters to characterize surface roughness. Measurements of atomic-scale friction of a freshly-cleaved highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite exhibited the same periodicity as that of corresponding topography. However, the peaks in friction and those in corresponding topography were displaced relative to each other. Variations in atomic-scale friction and the observed displacement has been explained by the variations in interatomic forces in the normal and lateral directions. Local variation in microscale friction is found to correspond to the local slope suggesting that a ratchet mechanism is responsible for this variation. Directionality in the friction is observed on both micro- and macro scales which results from the surface preparation and anisotropy in surface roughness. Microscale friction is generally found to be smaller than the macrofriction as there is less ploughing contribution in microscale measurements. Microscale friction is load dependent and friction values increase with an increase in the normal load approaching to the macrofriction at contact stresses higher than the hardness of the softer material. Wear rate for single-crystal silicon is approximately constant for various loads and test durations. However, for magnetic disks with a multilayered thin-film structure, the wear of the diamond like carbon overcoat is catastrophic. Breakdown of thin films can be detected with AFM. Evolution of the wear has also been studied using AFM. Wear is found to be initiated at nono scratches. AFM has been modified to obtain load-displacement curves and for nanoindentation hardness measurements with depth of indentation as low as 1 mm. Scratching and indentation on nanoscales are the powerful ways to screen for adhesion and resistance to deformation of ultrathin fdms. Detection of material transfer on a nanoscale is possible with AFM. Boundary lubrication studies and measurement of lubricant-film thichness with a lateral resolution on a nanoscale have been conducted using AFM. Self-assembled monolyers and chemically-bonded lubricant films with a mobile fraction are superior in wear resistance. Finally, AFM has also shown to be useful for nanofabrication/nanomachining. Friction and wear on micro-and nanoscales have been found to be generally smaller compared to that at macroscales. Therefore, micro/nanotribological studies may help def'me the regimes for ultra-low friction and near zero wear.
DLC films were deposited on Si wafer by RF plasma assisted CVD using CH4 gas. Tribological tests were conducted using rotating type ball on disk friction tester in dry air. Four kinds of mating balls were used. The mating balls were made with stainless steel but apply different annealing conditions to achieve different hardness conditions. Testing results in all load conditions showed that the harder the mating materials, the lower the friction coefficient among the three kind of martensite mating balls. In case of austenite balls, the friction coefficients were lower than fully annealed martensite ball. The high friction coefficient in soft martensite balls seems to be caused by the larger contact area between DLC film and ball. The wear tracks of DLC films and mating balls could have proven that effect. Measuring the wear track of both DLC films and mating balls have similar tendency comparing to the results of friction coefficients. Wear rate of austenite balls were also smaller than that of fully annealed martensite ball. The results of effect of applying load showed, the friction coefficients were become decrease when the applying loads exceed critical load conditions. The wear track of mating balls showed that some material transfer occurs from DLC film to mating ball during the high friction process. Raman spectra analysis showed that transferred material was a kind of graphite and contact surface of DLC film seems to undergo phase transition from carbon to graphite during the high friction process.
Understanding of the tribological characteristics of polytetrafluoroethylen (PTFE) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is crucial for their applications such as bearing and total joint replacement. In this work, the effect of the surface roughness of carbon steel on the tribological behaviors of PTFE and UHMWPE was experimentally investigated by using block-on-ring tribotester with friction force monitoring capability. It was found that that the amount of material transfer layers of PTFE formed on the carbon steel was significantly larger than those of UHMWPE, which was responsible the lower friction coefficient of PTFE. It was also concluded that the effect of surface roughness of carbon steel on the friction coefficient of UHMWPE was more significant than that of PTFE. For UHMWPE, it was found that the effect of surface roughness of counterface was varied with respect to applied normal force and sliding as well. Based on Archard's wear law, the wear coefficient of PTFE and UHMWPE was calculated to be $3{\times}10^{-5}$ ~ $8{\times}10^{-5}$ and $7{\times}10^{-6}$ ~ $2{\times}10^{-5}$, respectively.

Environmental contamination creates shortages of potable water. In such situations, the leakage of water due to breakage or aging of rubber valve seats is a serious problem. Rubber is apt to break when it is placed between two materials that contact each other. One way to avoid water leakage due to rubber damage and breakdown is to replace the rubber with metal, which is currently taking place in water distribution systems. In tribology, a severe form of wear is characterized by local macroscopic material transfer or removal, or by problems with sliding protrusions when two solid surfaces experience relative sliding under load. One of the major problems when metal slides is the occurrence of galling. Experimentally, various conditions influence incipient galling, such as hardness, surface roughness, temperature, load, velocity, and the external environment. This study sought to verify the galling tendencies of metal according to its hardness, surface roughness, load, and sliding velocity, and determine the quantitative effect of each factor on the galling tendencies.
Recently, rotating elements which use mechanical and electrical systems have been utilized for high speed and accuracy to increase the performance. The most important thing to get a more reliable system is to understand the friction, wear and characteristics which has an effect on various coated surfaces. In this study, the tribologicali characteristics of various soft/hard materials were investigated by using a custom-built pin-on-reciprocator tester From the experimental results, it was found that the friction coefficients of the soft material coated surfaces were lower under various normal loads due to trier self-lubricating ability and material transfer to the counter surface.
