Testing Gravitational Weak-lensing Maps with Galaxy Redshift Surveys

  • A gravitational weak-lensing map provides a weighted "picture" of the projected surface mass density and is to be an important tool for identifying "mass-selected" clusters of galaxies. However, weak-lensing maps have a limitation due to the projection of large-sclae structure along the line-of-sight. Geller et al. (2010) and Kurtz et al. (2012) compared massive clusters identified in a dense redshift survey with significant weak-lensing map convergence peaks. Both assessments of the efficiency of weak-lensing map for cluster identification did not draw a general conclusion, because the sample is so small. Thus, we additionally perform deep imaging observations of fields in a dense galaxy redshift survey that contain galaxy clusters at z~0.2-0.5, using CFHT Megacam. Our study will provide an important opportunity to examine the efficiency and completeness of a weak-lensing selection, and further to improve the method of cluster identification in future weak-lensing surveys.

Detection of planetary signals in extremely weak central perturbation microlensing events via next-generation ground-based surveys

  • Even though current microlensing follow-up observations focus on high-magnification events due to the high efficiency of planet detection, it is very difficult to do a confident detection of planets in high-magnification events with extremely weak central perturbations (i.e., the fractional deviation is ${\delta}{\leq}0.02$). For the confident detection of planets in the extremely weak central perturbation events, it is needed both the high cadence monitoring and the high photometric accuracy. A next-generation ground-based observation project, KMTNet (Korea Microlensing Telescope Network), satisfies both the conditions. Here we investigate how well planets in high-magnification events with extremely weak central perturbations are detected by KMTNet. First, we determine the probability of occurrence of events with ${\delta}{\leq}0.02$. From this, we find that for ${\leq}100M_E$ planets in the separation of $0.2AU{\leq}d{\leq}20AU$, events with ${\delta}{\leq}0.02$ occur with a frequency of more than 70%, in which d is the projected planet-star separation. Second, we estimate the efficiency of detecting planetary signals in the events with ${\delta}{\leq}0.02$ via KMTNet. We find that for main-sequence and subgiant source stars, ${\geq}1M_E$ planets can be detected more than 50% in a certain range that has the efficiency of ${\geq}10%$ and changes with the planet mass.

Investigating the Efficiency of Formic Acid and Hydrochloric Acid in Weak Acid Hydrolysis for Myoglobin

  • This study compares the efficiency of weak acid hydrolysis (WAH) using formic acid (FA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the analysis of myoglobin peptides. WAH using 2% and 5% formic acid resulted in the identification of 32 peptides, with varying degrees of cleavage at the C-terminus of aspartic acid residues. HCl WAH with different concentrations demonstrated an increase in the total number of identified peptides but a decrease in fully cleaved peptides as the HCl concentration increased. Notably, deamidation was observed during HCl WAH but not in FA WAH. The addition of HCl WAH after FA WAH provided a similar pattern to HCl WAH, with slightly higher levels of hydrolysis. These findings highlight distinct cleavage patterns and deamidation effects between FA and HCl in the context of WAH.

  • To measure the mass distribution of galaxy systems weak-lensing analysis has been widely used because it directly measures the total mass of a system regardless of its baryon content and dynamical state. However, the weak-lensing only provides a map of projected surface mass density. On the other hand, galaxy redshift surveys provide a map of the three-dimensional galaxy distribution. It thus can resolve the structures along the line of sight projected in the weak-lensing map. Therefore, the comparison of structures identified in the weak-lensing maps and in the redshift surveys is an important test of the issues limiting applications of weak-lensing to the identification of galaxy clusters. Debris removal efficiency depend on different ultrasonic irrigation protocols (초음파 세정 프로토콜에 따른 근관 내 잔사 제거의 효율성 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is comparing the efficiency of debris removal of passive ultrasonic irrigation depend on different protocols. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight mandibular premolars were randomly divided into 2 groups depend on vibration power (Weak and Strong, n = 24). And then two groups were subdivided into 3 groups depend on the number of times that PUI used (1, 2 and 3, n = 8). After standardization, teeth were split into two halves. On the wall of one half of root canal, three depressions were cut at 1, 3 and 5 mm from the apex and in the same way two depressions were cut on the other half of root canal at 2, 4 mm from the apex. Each depression was filled with mixture of dentine and NaOCl. After irrigation, images of the root canal wall were taken, and then the amount of remaining dentine debris was evaluated. Results: There was no significant difference between weak and strong power of vibration groups. Weak vibration groups did not show significant difference depend on the different number of times PUI used. But in the strong vibration groups, twice and three times used groups show better removal efficiency. Conclusion: The removal efficiency of dentine debris is not significantly different depend on the power of vibration. And multiple use of PUI could have better irrigating effects at the apical third area in the strong vibration group.

Effect of Initial Track Tension on the Tractive Performance of Tracked Vehicles (궤도의 초기 장력이 궤도 차량의 견인 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • A computer program was developed to simulate effect of the initial track tension on the tractive performance of tracked vehicles. The performance was evaluated in terms of drawbar pull, motion resistance, tractive coefficient and tractive efficiency. Results of the simulation showed that increase in track tension decreases the sinkage and mean maximum pressure in clay, making the ground pressure distribution more uniform. This tendency became more evident when the number of roadwheels increased. However, such change in MMPs was negligible in firm soils. Motion resistance was also decreased with increase in track tension and the number of roadwheels. Under weak soil conditions, tractive coefficient and efficiency increased generally as the track tension increased for a slip range of 10∼30%. For slippage less than 3∼4%, however, the tractive coefficient decreased with increase in track tension. In general, it was known that increasing track tension improves tractive performance in weak soil conditions. However, high track tension can reduce efficiency due to the increment of internal motion resistance caused by increased track tension.

  • When water shortage has been getting worse recently, toilet water-saving is one of the most effective way to solve the water shortage. Therefore, in this study, toilet flushing performance was investigated with VOF(Volume Of Fluid) model to obtain the basic design data for the development of high-efficiency toilets. The result showed that the shorter trapway, the longer the flushing duration time. However, the shorter trapway is found to have disadvantage in exhausting dirt due to relatively weak siphon and higher curvature. Since the remaining water in a trapway appears to help siphon, it is also an important factor in developing high-efficiency toilets. Although higher water level in the water tank shows better performance in flushing, lower water level is preferred to save water. Too low water level may cause dirt to clog the trapway due to relatively weak siphon.

  • Strengthening existing structure using the exterior steel wire is utilized because of their high adaptability and strengthening efficiency. In the practical aspect, the fixing methods, which are generally adopted have caused problems. A new method is not easily designed because of the weak points, a limit of tension stress, and complex transmit processes. To make up for the weak points in the current fixing method, tensile end bracket similar to a supporting plate has been developed, but the tensile end bracket was relatively big because of increasing length welded between the end plate and the resisting plate.
