  • The fluorescence properties and photoisomerization behavior of 1-(9-anthryl)-2-(n-quinolinyl)ethene (n-AQE, n=2-4) have been investigated in various solvents. t-3-AQE is strongly fluorescent, but does not accomplish photoisomerization, similar to parent hydrocarbon compound, t-1-(9-anthryl)-2-phenylethene (t-9-APE) or t-1-(9-anthryl)-2-(1-naphthyl)ethene (t-1-ANE). Fluorescence and photoisomerization oft-2-AQE and t-4-AQE are strongly affected by solvent polarity. Dependence of fluorescence quantum yield on the solvent polarity is moderate for t-2-AQE and large for t-4-AQE. In nonpolar solvent (in n-hexane), they exhibit relatively strong fluorescence, but do not isomerize to cis isomer on irradiation, even if inefficient isomerization is observed for t-4-AQE. However, as solvent polarity increases, their fluorescences become weak with efficient photoisomerization to corresponding cis isomer. Intramolecular charge-transfer excited state is presumed to contribute to photoisomerization. The S$_1$ decay parameters were found to be solvent-dependent due to the charge-transfer character of lowest S$_1$ state. In polar solvents, the activation barrier to twisting is reduced enhancing the isomerization of r-2-AQE and t-4-AQE in the singlet manifold.

  • This manuscript summarized advances in bootstrap methods for long-range dependent time series data. The stationary linear long-memory process is briefly described, which is a target process for bootstrap methodologies on time-domain and frequency-domain in this review. We illustrate time-domain bootstrap under long-range dependence, moving or non-overlapping block bootstraps, and the autoregressive-sieve bootstrap. In particular, block bootstrap methodologies need an adjustment factor for the distribution estimation of the sample mean in contrast to applications to weak dependent time processes. However, the autoregressive-sieve bootstrap does not need any other modification for application to long-memory. The frequency domain bootstrap for Whittle estimation is provided using parametric spectral density estimates because there is no current nonparametric spectral density estimation method using a kernel function for the linear long-range dependent time process.

  • Spiral structure in disk galaxies is modeled with ncollisionless N-body simulations including live disks, halos, and bulges with a range of masses. Two of these simulations make long-lasting and strong two-arm spiral wave modes that last for about 5 Gyr with constant pattern speed. These two had a light stellar disk and the largest values of the Toomre Q parameter in the inner region at the time the spirals formed, suggesting the presence of a Q-barrier to wave propagation resulting from the bulge. The relative bulge mass in these cases is about 10%. Models with weak two-arm spirals had pattern speeds that followed the radial dependence of the Inner Lindblad Resonance. In addition to these, we also report a few more cases where two-armed spirals are developed and are maintained for a several rotation time scales.

  • We have investigated the anisotropic dispersion force effects for surfaces alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) on rubbed polystyrene (PS) surfaces by unidirection. In microphotographs an of the textures, we obtained the nematic (N) LCs are shown to align in both direction parallel and perpendicular to the rubbing for region up to medium rubbing, however to align in the direction perpendicular to the rubbing for strong rubbing region. We suggest that the anisotropic dispersion force is very important rather than macro-surface groove effect to uniform alignment of LCs. We also measured the temperature dependence of extrapolation length of 5CB on rubbed PS surfaces for strong rubbing. It is shown that the polar anchoring strength of 5CB is very weak on rubbed PS surface compared to the rubbed polyimide (PI) surface.

  • The investigations included the measurements of volume currents and also internal space charges on epoxy samples of mm thicknesses. The current versus time relations were shown to correspond well with classical forms of dielectric response such as the Curie-von Schweidler model. After the time transient, near steady currents were extremely small and exhibited a significant temperature dependence, similar in relation to the Poole-Frenkel hoping transport model. Equivalent resistances were on the order of 1019 ohms and represent very weak charge transport. Electrically stimulated acoustic waves were used to quantify the small internal charges that would accumulate within the epoxy. There was a notable homocharge near both anode and cathode. The dielectric response and the internal charge were related to show a consistent model for charge transport within unfilled epoxy.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of refrigerant-oil mixture for horizontal in-tube evaporator have been investigated experimentally. A smooth copper tube and a micro-fin tube with nominal 9.5 mm outer diameter and 1500 mm length were tested. For the pure refrigerant flow, the dependence of the axial heat transfer coefficient on quality was weak in the smooth tube, but in the micro-fin tube, the coefficients were 3 to 10 times greater as quality increases. Oil addition to pure refrigerant in the smooth tube altered the flow pattern dramatically at low mass fluxes, with a resultant enhancement of the wetting area by vigorous foaming. The heat transfer coefficients of the mixture for low and medium qualities were increased at low mass fluxes. In the micro-fin tube, however, the addition of oil deteriorates the local heat transfer performance for most of the quality range, except for low quality. The micro-fin tube consequently loses its advantage of high heat transfer performance for an oil fraction of 5%. Results are presented as plots of local heat transfer coefficient versus quality.

  • We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopy of ~600 emission line galaxies (ELGs) in the Virgo and Ursa Major clusters to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. We derived chemical abundances of galaxies using either a direct estimation of the electron temperature or empirical calibrations. We also estimated star formation rates (SFRs) using H alpha and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) luminosities. We see no significant difference of UV colors and SFRs of ELGs between the Virgo and Ursa Major, indicating weak dependence of their star formation activity on global cluster environment. We also discuss the segregation of gas-phase element abundances in cluster environment.

  • We have fabricated (0001) oriented hexagonal $HoMnO_3$ thin films with thickness of 300 nm using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique on $Pt(111)/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrates. The XRD $\theta-2\theta$ pattern shows only (0002), (0004), and (0008) reflection of a hexagonal phase, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of (0004) peak is under $1.6^{\circ}$. The chemical state of Mn from XPS spectra of the films reveals the presence of $Mn^{3+}$ only. The temperature dependence of dielectric constant shows a weak anomaly at magnetic $N\acute{e}el$ temperature $(T_N)$, which is about 70 K.

  • The glasses were prpared in the system CuI-CuS12TS-CuS12TO-MoOS13T by rapid quenching technique. These glasses have high ionic conductivities at 2$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of 10S0-1T[S/m], and the conductivities increase with increasing CuI and CuS12TS content. The value of activation energy for dielectric relaxation is nearly identical with that for conductivity. The cole-Cole parameter $\beta$ for representation of the distribution of dielectric relaxation times varies the range from 0.92 to 0.96. This parameter has a weak dependence on the composition of glass, and is independent of temperature. The correlation factors P for the glasses shows from 1.1 to 1.7.
