Self-emulsifiable polyethylene (PE) wax was prepared using acrylic acid grafted PE wax with potassium hydroxide and various emulsifiers for the economic production of PE wax emulsion. Modification reaction completion was confirmed that the peak from carbonyl group of acrylic acid disappeared and the new peak from carboxylic acid salts appeared in the FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) spectrum data. Self-emulsifiable properties of the modified PE wax were investigated by the emulsion size and the stability of wax emulsion without any additional emulsifiers. According to self-emulsifiable properties, the emulsion size and stability were varied on the concentration and structure of the emulsifier. The greater emulsion concentration and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) characteristics of the emulsifier resulted in the smaller emulsion size and better emulsion stability. In addition, the use of emulsifiers mixture was more effective to obtain smaller size and uniform distribution of emulsion than that of single emulsifier in PE wax modification reaction. Especially, modified PE wax with OAE-5 and LAE-15 emulsifiers mixture shows excellent performance in terms of the smallest emulsion size ($4.34{\mu}m$) and emulsion stability.
Research was conducted at the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory, Washington State University, Pullman, WA to evaluate the effects of the sequence of wax addition, wax level, and wax type on mechanical properties and water resistance performance of isocyanate-bonded particleboard. Mechanical properties and water resistance performance were not influenced significantly by the sequence of wax addition. Internal bond and wet modulus of rupture in bending strength were decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level, but dry modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending strength were not decreased significantly by increasing the wax emulsion level. Dry internal bond, dry and wet moduli of rupture, and modulus of elasticity were not decreased by increasing the solid wax level except for wet internal bond. The addition of 1.0 and 1.5% wax level did not produce any significant additional water resistance effect when compared to the addition of 0.5% wax level. Internal bond values of boards with solid wax addition showed significantly better results than boards with just a wax emulsion added. Modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and water resistance performance did not show significant difference between solid wax and wax emulsion.

This study was done in an effort to evaluate the possibility of recyclability of moisture-proof paper. Because it is difficult to recycle laminated moisture-proof paper, a mixture of styrene-butadiene latex(SB latex) and wax emulsion was used as moisture-proof paper chemicals. A bar coater was applied to make moisture-proof paper and the coated weight was 17 g/$m^2$. The mixing ratios of SB latex to wax emulsion were 85 : 15, 87 : 13, and 90 : 10, respectively. It was observed that the moisture-proof paper treated with SB latex and wax emulsion at the appropriate ratio could be recycled effectively. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particle which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of handsheets made of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping was measured to examine the fiber bonding and no significant difference in mechanical properties was observed.

It was possible to produce W/O/W one step multiple emulsion on the system which satisfied following conditions. 1. 1-5% of hydrophilic liquid surfactant over HLB20 and lipophilic liquid surfactant which has HLB 3∼5 2. Non wax copolymers as oil thickener 3. More than 0.5% of carbomer as aqueous thickener 4. The manufacturing process which neutralize the dispersed carbomer (2.0% in water), after emulsifying. For the selective addition into inner and outer aqueous phase, we melted the glucose in water before emulsifying. Using an Anthrone analysis method, we analyzed the encapsulation yield of glucose in inner water phase. It was possible to raise the water encapsulation yield of the multiple emulsion through the following conditions. 1. Using of anionic hydrophilic surfactant(HLB 40) and lipophilic surfactant (HLB 3∼5) 2. Controlling the ratio of hydrophilic surfactant and lipophilic surfactant 3. Strengthening interface with increase of non wax oil thickener. When the separated adding process of glucose was adopted, approximately 85% of glucose was added selectively within inner aqueous phase.
In order to investigate the decay process of wood treated with preservative, waterproofing agent and their compound systems, a full-cell process was applied to impregnate the sapwood of poplar (Populus cathay) at paraffin wax emulsion concentrations of 0.5% and 2.0%, Copper Azole (CA) concentrations of 0.3% and 0.5%, and their four compound systems, respectively. Leaching tests and laboratory decay resistance against the white-rot fungus Corious versicolor (L.) Murrill for treated wood were carried out according to the America Standard E11-06 and China Standard GB/T 13942.1-2009. At certain time intervals during the decay test, samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) to investigate the time-dependent changes of chemical components and crystalline structure, thus clarifying the decay mechanisms. The results suggested that white-rot fungi degrade hemicellulose and lignin in the wood cell wall first, followed by a simultaneous degradation of polysaccharides and lignin. Besides, CA could not only slower the decomposition of both hemicellulose and lignin, but also reduce the degradation amount of hemicellulose. However, paraffin wax emulsion at high concentration had a negative effect on the impregnation of CA for the compound system treated wood.

Candelilla wax-in-water nanoemulsions stabilized by Span 80/Tween 80 were prepared by the phase inversion composition (PIC) method. Stable nanoemulsions with droplet diameters below 50 nm could be formed when the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values were between 13.5 and 14.5, surfactant concentration was 5.0 wt%, and the surfactant-wax ratio was 1:1. Increased emulsification temperature and cooling rate were found to improve the emulsion properties. Process of PIC (adding aqueous phase to the wax phase) produced smaller droplet size nanoemulsion compared to the process of adding wax phase to the aqueous phase. The stability of these nanoemulsions was assessed by following the change in droplet diameters with time of storage at room temperature (${\sim}25^{\circ}C$). The size remained constant during 2 months storage time.

Wax components can be precipitated when surrounding temperature decreases below wax precipitation temperature (WAT). WAT as well as pour point are important characteristics to evaluate the behavior of waxy oils. In this study, qualitative and quantitative evaluations of waxes in waxy model oils were presented after determining WAT and pour point. In case of anhydrous waxy model oils, ASTM D2500 may be most useful to determine WAT because of the transparent nature of model oils. With same apparatus, ASTM D97 is also applicable to determine the pour point of waxy oils in a serial determination. In case of emulsified model oils, however, it is difficult to measure WAT because of its opaque nature. This study employed FTIR spectroscopy to determine wax precipitation temperature and discussed the effect of emulsion state regarding the values of WAT. Further study would be needed to conclude the effect of water contents to WAT values in case of emulsified waxy oil.

In this study, two biodegradable polymer(PLA, PBS) emulsions were treated on agricultural packaging paper such as fruit bagging paper. Water-repellency, mechanical properties, and SEM image with thermal aging were measured on the emulsion treated fruit bagging paper. Biodegradable polymers(such as poly lactic acid, poly butylene succinate) emulsion treated fruit bagging paper had higher water-repellency and strength than other water-repellent(such as acrylic repellent, linseed oil and paraffin wax) treated fruit bagging paper. According to FE-SEM results of polymer emulsion coated fruit bagging paper, the colloidal particles of emulsion after thermal treatment (looks like being) were adhered to the fibers. Thus, using biodegradable polymer emulsion is expected to protect a fruit for a long time.
