Widely-tunable high-speed wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor-fiber ring laser (고리형 반도체-광섬유 레이저에서 4광파 혼합에 의한 광대역 및 고속 파장 변환기)

  • We demonstrate a widely-tunable wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor-fiber ring laser with no external pump light. Applying 10 GHz short pulses at -8 dBm as a probe signal, we achieve continuous wavelength tuning over the semiconductor optical amplifier gain-bandwidth reaching 30 nm down- and 17 m up-wavelength conversion. In addition to the wide tuning capability, the converter shows high-speed conversion and low saturation power capabilities.

  • A study of the tunable fiber DFB laser using PZT-stretcher is presented. The device has an laser ocsillator by using a fiber Bragg grating at 1559.4 nm written directly into a 3-cm long $Er^{3+}$ doped fiber. Post UV-exposure method to provide the necessary phase shift is used for a single mode operation. The device shows the single mode operation of $230\muW$ output power and has a narrow linewidth of 35 kHz. The lasing wavelength of the laser can be tuned in a range of 3 nm by stretching the grating.rating.

  • There is a considerable interest in tunable DFB-LD for their use in OFDM and coherent optical communications. In this paper, A modeling of ${\lambda}/4$-shifted tunable wavelength three electrode DFB-LD was performed considering the spatial hole burning within a laser diode cavity. The modeling will show design paramenters' requirement for high-speed and broad bandwidth lasers. The simulations of modeling prove that the continuous tuning range is about 3nm and the SMSR is about several dB. We showed that the optical power and carrier density distribution along z for several dc current with SHB. It was shown that prove that optical power and carrier density along cavity are changed and thismeans that modeling is correct.

  • A widely tunable multi-channel grating cavity laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device is implemented in Littman configuration with an echelle grating based on Rowland circle construction and realized by monolithically integrating all elements in an InP substrate. Lasing wavelength is selected by turning on an amplifier and the appropriate channel element in the array, and it is tuned by controlling light deflection electrically. The 6-channel device exhibits a tuning range of about 50 nm with a side mode suppression ratio of more than 30 dB. This is accomplished by adjusting the applied current of the dispersive element and phase control section.

  • Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy was performed for analysis of the H$_2$$^{18}$ O/H$_2$$^{16}$ O isotope ratio of a water sample which was enriched by the membrane distillation method. In order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, the wavelength modulation spectroscopic method was used with a lock-in amplifier. The fringe noise could be suppressed by using the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) lowpass filter and the optimization of the modulation depth of the laser frequency. The maximum deviation of $\delta$-value was measured to be$\pm$4$\textperthousand$.

The Operating Characteristics of DBR-LD with Wavegudies Coupling Structure (도파로 결합 구조에 따른 DBR-LD의 동작특성)

  • In this paper, we described the fabrication and the performance of wavelength tunable distributed bragg reflector (DBR) laser diode (LD), having different waveguide coupling mechanisms; integrated-twin-guide (ITG) DBR-LD and butt coupled (BT) DBR-LD. This deviceis fabricated by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth and planar buried heterostructure (PBH)-type transverse current confinement structure. The result of measurement, the optical performance of BT-DBR-LD is better over 2 times than that of ITG-DBR-LD at the variation of threshold current and output power, and slop efficiency due to the higher coupling efficiency of the butt coupled structure than the integrated twin guide structure. The maximum wavelength tuning range is about 7.2nm for ITG DBR-LD and 7.4nm for BT DBR-LD. Both types of lasers have a very high yield of single mode operation with a side-mode suppression ratio of more than 35dB.

  • Fiber Bragg grating sensors are fabricated by core index modulation using UV laser and phasemask. Bragg wavelength of the grating is changed by the external strain. In this paper, a signal processing system of fiber Bragg grating sensor has studied in the optical wavelength domain. The system is based on the sweep semiconductor light source that consists of SLD, F-P tunable filter and etalon filter. The hysteresis effects of PZT in the F-P tunable filter are compensated. The long term measurement stability is obtained by controlling the temperature of F-P tunable filter and the SLD. We compare the strain data from fiber Bragg grating sensor and that from strain gauge at concrete hume pipe. We also get very good results for the long gauge displacement using fiber Bragg grating sensor which are identical to the data with short gauge length ordinary displacement sensor.

Double-pass Second Harmonics Generation of Tunable CW Infrared Laser Beam of DOFA System in Periodically Poled LiNbO3 (PPLN 비선형 결정과 이중통과법을 이용한 DOFA 시스템에서 증폭된 연속발진형 파장가변 적외선 레이저광의 제 2고조파 발생)

  • The optimum conditions of second harmonic generation (SHG) can be successfully achieved experimentally using single pass and double pass methods of a pumping beam. The beam has a power of several Watts radiated by a DOFA (Diode Laser Oscillator & Fiber Amplifier) system, which is a high power CW wavelength tunable infrared laser system, in a PPLN (Periodically Poled MgO doped Lithium Niobate) nonlinear crystal. In the case of a single pass method, the parameters are the wavelength of 535 nm for SHG and the output power of 245 mW generated from the pumping input beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W at phase matching temperature of $108.9^{\circ}C$. The conversion efficiency of SHG was 10%. In order to enhance the output of SHG, the double pass method of the SHG system of a PPLN using a concave mirror for the retroreflection and a pair of wedged flat windows for phase compensation was also presented. In this double pass system, we obtained the SHG output beam with the wavelength of 535 nm and the maximum power of 383 mW at optimum phase matching temperature of $108.5^{\circ}C$ by using an incident pumping beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W. The maximum conversion efficiency is 15.6%, which is more than that of the single pass method.

  • Multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber(EDF) ring laser was developed by using a sampled fiber Bragg grating reflecting multiple wavelengths, which was formed by impressing periodical pressure on the outside of a fiber Bragg grating. The wavelength spacing was varied to 4.1nm, 1.41nm and 0.82nm, by pressing the grating with the pressure period $200{\mu}m$, $580{\mu}m$ and $1000{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • This study realized low-temperature crystallization process of the $Ba_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}TiO_3$ (BST) thin films without thermal damage of substrate using excimer laser annealing (ELA) and structural and electrical characteristics were investigated. The amorphous BST thin films were prepared on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate by sol-gel method at $250^{\circ}C$. The ELA was carried out using KrF excimer laser which provided excitation wavelength of 248 nm. The beam homogenizing system was used in order to homogenize beam shape of Gaussian fit. The XRD and SEM were used to analyze structural characteristics and the microwave capacitance, dielectric loss and tunability of the BST films were measured by a symmetrical stripline resonator method with shorted end. Consequently, the crystallinity of BST thin films were improved after ELA process and RF tunable capacitor was demonstrated at low temperature below $300^{\circ}C$.
