  • Research for renewable energy is being performed since it has the merits of little pollution of the environment and sustainable energy resources. Microalgae is attractive as a renewable energy resource. Biomass of the microalgae can be produced by mass culturing, and bulk harvest technology of is needed to produce biomass continuously. Recently, ultrasonic waves were used to harvest the cultivated microalgae continuously. In this study, the separation process using ultrasonic waves was performed to effectively harvest the microalgae. An ultrasonic wave separation resonator was designed and manufactured based on the acoustic field analysis. Separation experiments using design of experiment were carried out, and the influence of experimental variables from the ultrasonic wave separation process was investigated. Mixing conditions of variables were estimated to obtain high separation efficiency and a large microalgae harvest. Experimental results for suitable mixing conditions were compared with simulation results calculated from the state equation.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the detailed performances of the impulse type radial turbine and to present an optimum configuration of the turbine. The impulse type radial turbine has been manufactured and investigated experimentally under steady and sinusoidally oscillating flow conditions by model testing. Then, the starting characteristics under sinusoidally flow conditions have been evaluated by a numerical simulation using a quasi-steady analysis. As a result, the running and starting characteristics of the impulse type radial turbine for wave energy conversion have been clarified. Furthermore, the recommended configuration is presented, especially for setting angles of inner and outer guide vanes.

  • With growing of wind turbine industry, offshore wind energy is getting more attention in recent years. Among all the components of offshore wind turbines, the foundation of the offshore wind turbine plays a key role in stability of whole system. In this work, the 5 MW NREL reference wind turbine with rated speed of 11.4 m/s is used for load calculation. Wind and wave loads are calculated using GH-Bladed (Garard Hassan) and FAST (NREL). Additionally, FE simulation is carried out to investigate the wave effect on the support structure. Meanwhile, this work is to simulate systemic and optimized load cases for the foundation analysis of wind turbine system.

  • The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed that a simple floating body was filled with internal fluid of same draft. The characteristics of motions were evaluated in each case of the opening or closing of the upper valves.

  • This paper deals with the design and aerodynamic analysis of a special-type impulse turbine, with an end plate for wave energy conversion. Numerical analysis was performed using a CFD code, FLUENT. The main idea of the proposed end plate was to minimize the adverse effect of tip clearance of turbine blade, and was borrowed from ducted propeller, with so-called penetrating end plate for special purpose marine vehicles. Results show that efficiency increases up to $5\%$, depending on the flow coefficient; a higher flow coefficient yields increased efficiency. Decrease of input coefficient CAwith an end plate is the main reason for higher efficiency. Performance of end plate at various design parameters, as well as flow conditions, was investigated; the advantages and disadvantages of the presentimpulse turbine were also discussed.

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis and design of impulse turbine for owe type wave energy plant. Numerical analysis is performed using a commercial software FLUENT. This parametric study includes the variation of several important parameters, such as the number and shape of blades, hub ratio, and tip clearance. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires a considerable amount of computing time, two-dimensional analysis is employed to find out optimum principal particulars. Full three-dimensional calculations are also performed for several test cases, in order to confirm the validity of the two-dimensional approach. Up to the present stage, tentative results are demonstrated the usefulness of 2-D analysis.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of the Wells turbine for wave energy conversion have been investigated by the numerical simulation to reproduce hysteretic behaviors. The pressure distributions on the suction surface of the blade were investigated to find out the cause of the hysteretic mechanism. The results have shown that the hysteretic behavior is associated with streamwise vertical flow appearing near the suction surface and become more obvious. as the tip clearance and solidity change. Also it has shown that such phenomena occur due to different behaviors of wakes in the accelerating and decelerating flow process. The CFD analysis shows a good agreement with experimental results.

  • An efficient wave energy converter with new overtopping flow device on which spiral reefs are attached is proposed by Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute in Korea and its candidate substructures such as monopile, tripod and jacket are designed. This study investigates modal characteristics of the substructures by analyzing natural frequencies and mode shapes. Based on the modal analysis results, relative strength, governing modes and some complementary design strategies of each candidate substructure are compared and discussed considering water depth conditions.

  • In this paper, the 100 % non-inductive current drive scenarios are addressed for the steady-state operation on KT-2 tokamak, with the profile control using fast wave and lower hybrid wave as the external tools. Considering the stability, the well-aligned current profiles with a reversed-shear and $q_{min}$ > 2.0 has been favor-able in high ${\beta}_{p}$ plasma, together with a possibly higher bootstrap current fraction. Therefore, the effects of the auxiliary heating power profile on the control of MHD favorable current profile are evaluated in detail.
