  • Cast austenitic stainless steel (CASS) is used for fabricating different components of the primary reactor coolant system of pressurized water reactors. However, the thermal embrittlement of CASS resulting from long-term operation causes structural safety problems. Ultrasonic testing for flaw detection has been used to assess the thermal embrittlement of CASS; however, the high scattering and attenuation of the ultrasonic wave propagating through CASS make it difficult to accurately quantify the flaw size. In this paper, we present a different approach for evaluating the thermal embrittlement of CASS by assessing changes in the material properties of CASS using a nonlinear ultrasonic technique, which is a potential nondestructive method. For the evaluation, we prepared CF8M specimens that were thermally aged under four different heating conditions. Nonlinear ultrasonic measurements were performed using a contact piezoelectric method to obtain the relative ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter, and a mini-sized tensile test was performed to investigate the correlation of the parameter with material properties. Experimental results showed that the ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter had a correlation with tensile properties such as the tensile strength and elongation. Consequently, we could confirm the applicability of the nonlinear ultrasonic technique to the evaluation of the thermal embrittlement of CASS.

  • In order to analyze the response of the offshore structure numerically, the linear potential theory is generally applied for simplicity, and only the radiation damping is considered among various damping forces. Therefore, the results of a numerical simulation can be different from the motion of the structure in a real environment. To reduce the differences between the simulation results and experimental results, the viscous damping, which affects the motion of the structure, is also taken into account. The appropriate damping model is essential for the numerical simulation in order to obtain precise responses of the offshore structure. In this study, various damping models such as linear or quadratic damping and the nonlinear drag force from numerous slender bodies were used to simulate the free decay motion of the platform, and its characteristics were confirmed. The optimized damping model was found by comparing the simulation results to the experimental results. The hydrodynamic forces and wave exciting forces of the structure were obtained using WAMIT, and the free decay test was simulated using OrcaFlex. A free decay test of the scale model was performed by KRISO.

  • The electronic band structures of Metal-doped titanium dioxide, M-doped $TiO_2$ (M=Co, Cr, Fe), have been studied by using XRD, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometer and FP-LAPW (Full-Potential Linearized Augmented-Plane-Wave) method. The UV-vis of M-doped $TiO_2$ (M=Co, Cr, Fe) showed two absorption edges; the main edge due to the titanium dioxide at 387 nm and a shoulder due to the doped metals at around 560 nm. The band gap energies of Co, Cr and Fe-doped $TiO_2$ calculated by FP-LAPW method were 2.6, 2.0, and 2.5 eV, respectively. The theoretically calculated band gap energy of $TiO_2$ by using FP-LAPW method was the same as experimental results. FP-LAPW method will be useful for fabrication and development of photo catalysts working under visible light.

  • Purpose: This study aims to identify the effect of temperature reduction by the application of cool roof coatings to Changwon City Hall in South Gyeongsang Province. The indoor and outdoor temperatures of the cool roofing building were analyzed and compared to that of an existing building with green-colored roof coated with waterproof polyurethane. Method: The surface temperatures and reflectivity of rooftops, surface temperatures of ceilings and the interior, and outdoor temperature and humidity of the two aforementioned buildings were measured from June to September in 2014. The measurements were taken every 10 min. Result: The surface temperature of the building with the cool roof was lower by a maximum of $9^{\circ}C$ with the reflectivity of the rooftop at an average of 0.55, which is higher than that of the building with green polyurethane by approximately 0.3. The temperature of the ceiling inside the building with the cool roof was about $1{\sim}2^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the ordinary building. Also, the indoor temperature of the office with cool roof coatings was about $0.5{\sim}1.0^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the office with green-colored roofing building. The results show that cool roof coatings can lower the temperature of buildings. In the next research, the reduction in consumption of energy for air conditioning will be investigated by utilizing building energy simulation tools.

  • The standard penetration test (SPT) has been widely used because of its usability, economy, and many correlations with soil properties among other factors. In SPT, hammer energy is an important factor to evaluate and calibrate N values. To measure hammer energy, an instrumented SPT rod was developed considering that stress waves transferring on rods during SPT driving are the same as stress waves transferring on piles due to pile driving. Using this idea, an instrumented SPT rod with a pile driving analyzer was applied as a pile capacity prediction tool in this study. In order to evaluate this method, SPT and dynamic cone tests with the instrumented SPT rod were conducted and also 2 pile load tests were performed on pre-bored steel pipe piles at the same test site. End bearings were predicted by CAPWAP analysis on force and velocity waves from dynamic cone penetration tests and SPT. Comparing these predicted end bearings with static pile load tests, a new prediction method of the end bearing capacity using the instrumented SPT rod was proposed.

  • 3-dimensional temperature distribution of the exhaust gas of a fire flame of LPG have been measured by the constructed CT-TDLAS system. 3-Dimensional temperature distributions are measured by 2 layers of CT-TDLAS. Each layer has $8{\times}8$ laser beams implying the temperatures of 64 meshes are measured. SMART algorithm has been adopted for reconstructing the absorption coefficients on the meshes. The line strengths at 6 representative wave lengths of $H_2O$ have been used for obtaining the absorption spectra of the exhaust gas. The temperature distributions measured by the constructed CT-TDLAS have been compared with those by the thermocouples. The relative errors measured between by thermocouple and CT-TDLAS were 13% in average and 33% at maximum. The similarity of temperature distribution between by thermocouples and by CT-TDLAS has been shown at the lower layer than the upper layer implying an unstability of combustions.

  • In this study, we give a detailed account of normal and abnormal state of GIS(Gas Insulated Switch-gear) using the preventive diagnostic technology. And it is based on the analysis and diagnosis for storing data of GIS by intelligent GIS monitoring system. The wave shape of GIS sound is similar to noise and is systematically generated by discharge and its corona sound. Therefore, in this paper, to classify normal and abnormal GIS sound. We could discriminate between normal and abnormal case using level crossing rate(LCR) and spectrogram energy rate.

  • Identification of damage has become an evolving area of research over the last few decades with increasing the need of online health monitoring of the large structures. The visual damage detection can be impractical, expensive and ineffective in case of large structures, e.g., offshore platforms, offshore pipelines, multi-storied buildings and bridges. Damage in a system causes a change in the dynamic properties of the system. The structural damage is typically a local phenomenon, which tends to be captured by higher frequency signals. Most of vibration-based damage detection methods require modal properties that are obtained from measured signals through the system identification techniques. However, the modal properties such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are not such good sensitive indication of structural damage. Identification of damaged jacket type offshore platform members, based on wavelet packet transform is presented in this paper. The jacket platform is excited by simple wave load. Response of actual jacket needs to be measured. Dynamic signals are measured by finite element analysis result. It is assumed that this is actual response of the platform measured in the field. The dynamic signals first decomposed into wavelet packet components. Then eliminating some of the component signals (eliminate approximation component of wavelet packet decomposition), component energies of remained signal (detail components) are calculated and used for damage assessment. This method is called Detail Signal Energy Rate Index (DSERI). The results show that reduced wavelet packet component energies are good candidate indices which are sensitive to structural damage. These component energies can be used for damage assessment including identifying damage occurrence and are applicable for finding damages' location.

  • The reduction mechanism at a mercury electrode of o-cresolphthalexon(OCP) in strongly alkaline supporting electrolytes has been investigated by several electrochemical techniques. The radical formed after first one electron reduction uptake, dimerizes. The result of cyclic voltammetric investigation demonstrated the reversible nature of the electron transfer and standard rate constant was $3.27{\times}10^{-2}$ cm/sec. The apparent irreversible behavior of the second wave is a result of the existence of a fast protonation following the second electron transfer. At low concentration of OCP(< $1{\times}10^{-4}$M), cathodic current were remarkably adsorptive properties. Prolonged electrolysis was carried out at controlled potential of -1.85V, original violet color of the solution becames progressively weaker, and then colorless solution. The final product of an exhaustive electrolysis is electro-inactive. The appearence of four steps may be explained by the fact that the reduction of OCP elucidated ECEC mechanism.

  • To ascertain the feasibility of the energy utilization in the sea adjacent to Korea, the distribution of the vertical temperature difference and the seasonal variation in the southeastern Yellow Sea are studied in relation to the sea water circulation. In summer, a region of high vertical temperature difference of approximately 16$^{\circ}C$ was found at a distance of approximately 40 miles from the western coast of Korea. It is located at the west of 125${\circ}$ 30`E and at the north of 34${\circ}$N. The vertical temperature structure is sustained by the inflow of Yellow Sea Warm Current water, the warming of the surface water of the Yellow Sea and the periodical renewal of the Yellow Sea Cold Water. It may be stated that power can be obtained from the sea water by making the use of the temperature difference. The vertical temperature difference was around 14$^{\circ}C$ in the western and southern waters of Jejudo Island. The vertical temperature difference decreases in autumn, and disappears due chiefly to the vigorous convective vertical mixing in winter when the northwest monsoon prevails. The power can be obtained from sea throughout the year, if power generation by the temperature difference is combined with that by wind and wave, and systemized in such a way that the former is employed in the hot season of summer, while the latter in winter and spring.
