  • The storage stability of fresh ginseng packaged individually in a soft film bag was more enhanced as the soft film with lower oxygen permeability was used, while the optimum water vapor permeability for enhancing the storage stability of fresh ginseng was estimated 3.5 g/m$^2$$.$day$.$90% RH when using the soft film with low oxygen permeability of 3.6∼5.4 cc/m$^2$$.$day$.$atm. The storage stability of the individually packaged fresh ginseng was also enhanced when the soft film bag was filled with carbon dioxide-oxygen-nitrogen (25:5:70) miked gas but the vacuum packaging exhibited little effect for the enhancement of storage stability of the fresh ginseng.

  • Application properties of ultra light weight silica aerogel toward polyurethane membranes were investigated. From the results of pre-milling process of the silica aerogel, the solvent for dispersion of the aerogel was determined for methyl ethyl ketone and its content in the solvent was determined by 30%. Using this aerogel dispersion, the polyurethane membranes were prepared according to the mixing amount of silica aerogel and various properties of the membranes were investigated. As results, the optimum mixing amount of silica aerogel inside polyurethane membranes was decided at 11%, because the improvement of light weight property, air permeability, and moisture vapor permeability were improved upto 11% of silica aerogel content, maintaining the water penetration resistance almost unchanged.

  • Alumina composite membranes were prepared by chemical vapor deposition and evaporation-oxidation process. For CVD process, deposition was carried out using aluminum-tri-isopropoxide at 35$0^{\circ}C$, 2 torr by heterogeneous reaction, and for evaporation-oxidation process, alumina composite membranes were prepared by evaporation of aluminum and dry oxidation at 80$0^{\circ}C$. As deposition time increases, water flux and N2 gas permeability of the composite membranes prepared by both processes were reduced. Applying gas permeation model, permeability and cracking possibility of top layer were evaluated.

  • To improve water-resistance and physical properties of sodium alginate film, effects of sodium alginate and plasticizer concentrations, divalent cation types and concentrations, and immersion time of films into divalent cation solutions on sodium alginate films were evaluated, based on elongation strength (ES), elongation rate (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS). Film made from 1.5% sodium alginate solution (w/w) had low WVP and WS, which are optimal characteristics for application of film preparation. Addition of plasticizer increased E and WS. Less than 2% $CaCl_2$ addition and 15min immersion time reduced WVP, WS, and E significantly (p<0.05). Sodium alginate films treated with $CuCl_2$, and $ZnCl_2$ solutions had lower WVP and WS, whereas $MgCl_2$ had no influence on improving water resistance of films.

  • Chitosan-based nanocomposite films were prepared using a solution intercalation method incorporating varying amounts of organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) from 0 to 30 wt%. The nanocomposite films prepared were optically clear despite a slight decrease in the transmittance due to the spatial distribution of nanoclay. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that a certain degree of intercalation or exfoliation formed when the amount of clay in the film was low and that microscale tactoids formed when the clay content in the sample was high (more than 10 wt%). The tensile strength (TS) of the chitosan film increased when the clay was incorporated up to 10 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the clay content of the film. The elongation at break (E) increased slightly upon the addition of low levels of clay up to 5 wt% and then decreased with further increases in the amount of the clay in the film. The water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased exponentially with increasing clay content. The water solubility (WS) and swelling ratio (SR) of the nanocomposite films decreased slightly, indicating that the water resistance of the chitosan film increased due to the incorporation of the nanoclay.

  • Composite films were prepared with soy protein isolate (SPI) and various clay minerals by casting from polymer and clay water suspension. Effects of clay minerals on film thickness, moisture content (MC), tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) were tested. Properties including thickness, surface smoothness, and homogeneity of films prepared with organically modified montmorillonite (O-MMT), Wamok clay (W-clay), bentonite, talc powder, and zeolite were comparable to those of control SPI films. TS increased significantly (p<0.05) in films prepared with O-MMT and bentonite, while WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) in bentonite-added films. WS of most nanocomposite films decreased significantly (p<0.05).

  • Airborne particulate matters have two modes of size distributions of coarse mode and fine mode. The coarse mode which is formed by break down mechanism of large particles has a peak around the $100\;{\mu}m$, and the fine mode formed by condensation and build up mechanism of evaporated vapors has a peak at several ${\mu}m$. The coarse mode particles can be removed easily by conventional collecting equipments such as a cyclone, an electrostatic precipitator, and a filter, however the fine mode particles can not be collected easily. Usually the fine mode particles are generated in the high temperature conditions especially through boilers and incinerators, so the high efficient and temperature filter is essential for the filtration. In this study, a nano ceramic filter for the removal of fine particles in the high temperature is developed and tested for several characteristics. The nano ceramic filter has double layer of micro and nano structure and the pressure drop and the filtration efficiency for $0.31\;{\mu}m$ at 3 cm/s are 15.45 mmAq, and 96.75%, respectively. The thermal conductivity is $0.038\;W/m{\cdot}K$, and the coefficient of water vapor permeability is $3.63\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$. It is considered that the sensible heat exchange rate is very poor because the low thermal conductivity but it has high potential to exchange latent heat.

  • To determine optimal conditions for preparing protein isolate film from fish meal, the water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile properties and solubility of fish meal proteinisolate (FMPI) film were measured. FMPI was extracted from fish meal under conditions of various extraction times at $60^{\circ}C$. Extracting time little affected to WVP of FMPI film. The film added with glycerol as plasticizer showed higher WVP than sorbitol added. As extraction time increased up to 1 hr, tensile strength and elongation were increased. While in more extracting time than 1 hr, increasing extracting time made tensile strength and elongation showed negative correlations. The correlation of soluble protein amount and tensile strength showed higher value ($r^{2}=0.83$) than that of elongation ($r^{2}=0.62$).

  • The utilization of excess whey is necessary to reduce dairy waste because the large amount of whey disposal in waste streams has caused environmental problems. During whey protein film production as the effective means of utilization of excess whey, we have examined the effects of pH, temperature, and plasticizers for water vapor permeability(WVP), tensile strength(TS), and elongation rate(%E) of the whey protein films. The 10% whey protein films had the highest WVP(28.73g$.$mm/kPa$.$day$.$㎡) and TS(1.85${\pm}$0.11Mpa). But, in this case, an increase of WVP was caused by the thickness of whey protein films. At the concentration of 8% whey protein, appropriate thickness was obtained. Whey protein films prepared at the pH 6.75 and 95$^{\circ}C$ showed lower WVP(28.38g$.$mm/kPa$.$day$.$㎡) and elongation rate(12.9%) and higher TS value(3.769${\pm}$0.407 MPa) than at the pH 6.75 and 75$^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increased, WVP of films decreased slightly and tensile strength increased slightly, while elongation rate decreased significantly. Higher WVP and TS were observed at pH6.75 compared to pH7-9. In contrast, significantly higher elongation was observed at pH 9comapred to pH6.75-8. Among the plasticizer types used, the addition of sorbitol showed the highest TS value(6.244${\pm}$0.297 MPa) at the concentration 0.4g sorbitol and elongation rate(49%) at the concentration of 0.6g sorbitol.

  • Nylon laminated low density polyethylene(LDPE) film is mostly used for package of Vienna sausage in Korea. The water vapor permeability and gas transmission rate of Nylon laminated LDPE film is higher than that of Oriented polypropylene/polyvinylidene chloride coated LDPE film. Comparision of shelf-life of Vienna sausage packed with both film was as follows. The water vapor permeability and gas transmission rate of PVDC coated film were 2.5 times lower and 20.7 to 30 times lower than those of Nylon laminated film, respectively. Shelf-lives of Vienna sausage packed with Nylon laminated film and PVDC coated films were 25 days and 31 days at $15^{\circ}C$, 32 days and 41 days at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively.
