The purpose of this study was to develop water-purification vegetation mats consisting of the eco-friendly materials and to validate their water purification capabilities with the objective of reducing nonpoint pollution into streams. The developed vegetation mats are made of coconut fiber shell and filling consisted of zeolite, diatomaceous earth or a mixture of calcinated foam media. The bench scale assessment of the water purification capability of the three filling materials showed that the removal efficiencies of suspended solid (SS), total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) were higher in the foam media than in zeolite or diatomaceous earth. From the results of the field experiment, the removal efficiencies of the vegetation mats filled with the foam media were 60.1% in SS, 32.2% in T-N and 20.2% in T-P. Therefore the vegetation mats filled with the foam media calcinated from zeolite and diatomaceous earth should have higher efficiencies in controlling the nonpoint source pollutions in streams.
Critical and allowable shear stress acting on the mattress revetment, is presented in this study. First of all, shear stress at each spot is computed when the hydraulic power act on the waterway. Secondly, median diameter of the filling rocks is computed using shear stress and Shields coefficient which are used to decide the critical motion of the particle. Finally, the range of critical and allowable shear stress is estimated which meet the particle stability and indicated that the mattress is a stable hydraulic structure in comparison with the riprap. Therefore the required median diameter of riprap is three times higher than that of mattress. Contrarily, this study also analyzed that resisting power of mattress to shear stress is three times higher than that of riprap on the same size.

Some living thingsuse micro- or nano- structures for living in nature. Scientists and engineers made efforts to mimic them, and they succeeded in making new types of applications. They used 'Namib desert beetle' to self-filling device by moisture harvesting and 'lotus leaf' to self-cleaning device by water repelling. 'Namib desert beetle' and lotus leaf have micro-patterns on their surface, which consists of hydrophobic or hydrophilic materials [1]. Moreover, micro-patterns on the surface make self-filling or self-cleaning property enhanced because of the surface roughness. Surface roughness enhances wettability [2]. Micro-pattern is a significant factor to make the surface be functional, so we want to make new types of functional surface by micro-patterning. In this work,we make several functional micro-patterns (radial, line, and dot arrays) using maskless lithography and analyze the characteristics of each micro-pattern. In order to analyze and understand surface characteristics, micro-patterns with varying sizes are investigated. All experiments are proceeded on mr-DWL5 photo resists coated on silicon wafers in same condition. All the experiments have demonstrated good performances about hydrophobic or hydrophilic property corresponding to their material and structural combinations. In radial micro-pattern, although the surface is flat, water drops on hydrophilic radial pattern can be convergent to a middle point and water drops on hydrophobic radial pattern can be divergent from the middle point. In line array micro-pattern, water drops can roll off along only one direction in parallel with the line arrays. Such phenomena might be mainly caused by the local change of surface roughness. From these results, controlling the movement and direction of water drops is made feasible without introducing a slope, which can potentially be used for new types of applications.
A large scale hydrological laboratory model tests for the geotextile tube were conducted to investigate the stability of geotextile tube and the capability of breakwater with variations of significant wave height, percentage of soil filling, and the water level above geotextile tube. The sliding displacement of geotextile tube is measured to check the stability of geotextile tube for given the various significant wane heights. The marked mash was laid out at the bottom of water channel to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The bench mark was furnished in the upper part of water channel and the initial location was marked every 10cm interval to measure the displacement of geotextile tube. The wane transmit ratios are analyzed with the variations of soil filling of tube and of the top crown height wave above the geotextile tube in order to study the performance of brekwater before and after the installation of geotextile tube.
This study was to analyze how elementary school science textbooks explain dissolution and to examine the patterns of elementary school teachers' conceptions on dissolution and the teaching practices on dissolution of elementary school teachers. According to the result of the textbook analysis, the textbooks based on the 7th curriculum didn't explain dissolution very differently from those based on the 6th curriculum. The contents dealing with dissolution in the textbooks of 7th curriculum became difficult gradually as the year went up, but the connected organization of the contents made students learn it easily. For example, in order to learn dissolution introduced first in the 3rd year 2nd semester textbook, students would tell soluble substance in water from insoluble substance in water as they put powdered substance in water. In the 5th year 1st semester textbook students were supposed to acquire the knowledge related to dissolution through the designed activities such as comparing solubility produced by different solvents and defining a solvent, a solute, dissolution, and a solution. In addition, teachers' guide for 5th year 1st semester textbook elucidated the principle of dissolution using attraction concept that was scientific. The result of the survey on teachers showed that 90% of elementary school teachers understood the dissolution of salt in water just as millet particles' filling the space between bean particles and they responded that they demonstrated millet particles' filling the space between been particles when they taught the dissolution of salt in water. When it comes to teachers who had the right idea on dissolution as the attraction conception, understanding was one thing and teaching was another, because they often instructed dissolution as the space conception in the real teaching.
Water modeling experiments and computer simulation for the predictions of defects of die castings are very important to produce high quality castings with less cost. The relation between the variable air vent system and the characteristics of the fluid flow in the die cavity is studied by using water modeling tests, which give ideas on reasonable designing of die cavity, vent arrangement and gating system. In order to test the water modeling, injection is done by using water containing NaCl. Flow behaviors in cavities are visualized by high speed camera and video tape recorder, and local filling time is measured with electrode sensors. Special attention is paid to the configuration of die cavity. Simulated results by computer are examined and compared with the results of water modeling experiments. There are close correlations between the simulated results and water modeling ones.

Mostly, water leakage took place in construction joints. In case of cable tunnels constructed by open-cut method, waterstops have been used to prevent the water leakage. But, we haven't any experience to install the waterstops in NATM cable tunnels. So, it is necessary to develope the waterstops and test the performance of it in laboratory. We manufactured cable tunnel lining quarter scale model by pouring concrete, and installed the waterstops. After filling the inside of concrete lining about two-third with water, we put the air pressure on the water, In addition, it is also carried out water leakage test for concrete lining model without waterstops. As a result, we confirmed the performance of waterstops and its adaptability. It is also tested that the performance of rubber gaskets used in concrete segments of Shield tunnelling. In addition, we determined the allowable infiltration rate for cable tunnel with non-drainage system.
An engineered barrier system (EBS) for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) is composed of a disposal canister with spent fuel, a buffer material, a gap-filling material, and a backfill material. As the buffer is located in the empty space between the disposal canisters and the surrounding rock mass, it prevents the inflow of groundwater and retards the spill of radionuclides from the disposal canister. Due to the fact that the buffer gradually becomes saturated over a long time period, it is especially important to investigate its thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) properties considering variations of saturated condition. Therefore, this paper suggests a new method of measuring thermal conductivity and water suction for single compacted bentonite at various levels of saturation. This paper also highlights a convenient method of saturating compacted bentonite. The proposed method was verified with a previous method by comparing thermal conductivity and water suction with respect to water content. The relative error between the thermal conductivity and water suction values obtained through the proposed method and the previous method was determined as within 5% for compacted bentonite with a given water content.

Direct estimation of the pollutant load(PL) should be carried out by the data filling in the missing intervals using an appropriate method because it is impossible in which the flow discharge(water quantity) or water quality(WQ) time-series data set have the missing intervals. In this study, the several methods estimating the water quality in the missing periods are suggested and the WQ and pollutants load change patterns are compared and evaluated based on the reproducible degree of the available data change patterns. The most appropriate method is finally suggested and the contribution factor deciding the influence degree and the PL characteristics of the river estuary is also suggested. Based on the PL estimation results using the several methods, the interpolation method considering the fluctuation of the available WQ data is shown to be most efficient. The PL patterns of the Han river estuary is classified as the discharge-dominated type. The data filling process is inevitable and the WQ estimation using the efficient and effective method should be carried out in order to estimate reasonable PL.

In this paper, we propose the data stream allocation algorithms for maximizing sum capacity of downlink multiuser MIMO (Multiple-input Multiple-output) systems with BD (Block Diagonalization). The conventional BD precoding algorithms maximize the capacity by controlling power against channel gain of each user. In multiuser MIMO systems, however, the number of data streams for each user can be used to as another control parameter, which determines the capacity. This paper proposes the data stream allocation algorithm of BD for increasing capacity in multiuser MIMO systems. The proposed algorithm allocates unequal bit stream to each user based on channel matrix of each user for maximizing sum capacity. It is proved that proposed algorithm can achieve the significantly improved sum capacity by computer simulation.
