Recycling and characterization of bone incorporated with concrete for gamma-radiation shielding applications

  • This research intends to recycle bone and incorporate it into concrete for radiation shielding application using Phy-X/PSD software. Cement, sand and granite were mixed in proportion of 0.5 kg:1 kg:1 kg to obtain sample A. Other concretes composing of cement, sand, granite and bone ash was in proportion 0.45 kg:1 kg:1 kg:0.05 kg, 0.1 kg:1 kg:1 kg:0.4 kg and 0.35 kg:1 kg:1 kg:0.15 kg to obtain samples B, C and D respectively. 0.5 water-to-cement (W/C) ratio was adopted throughout the mixes because the control mix contain the normal water quantity for normal hydration of cement. Replacing the bone ash for the cement in the fabricated concretes enhances their densities where the fabricated concretes' density decreased from 2.33 g/cm3 to 2.22 g/cm3 by raising the reinforcing bones fly ash concentration from 0 to 0.15 kg. Additionally, increasing the bones fly ash concentration within the fabricated concretes increases their linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) where the fabricated concretes' μ values at 0.662 MeV reach 0.181 cm-1, 0.178 cm-1, 0.174 cm-1, and 0.171 cm-1, respectively for concretes A, B, C, and D. The use of other local materials is recommended, as it improves waste management being the major aim of the sustainable development goal.

  • To improve the durability of concrete structure, we usually consider the reduction of water-cement ratio, the increase of concrete cover depth and the use of mineral admixtures. The use of admixtures make concrete more durable and tighten against water in recent papers so it is needed to study more about the relationship between the admixtures and the chloride ion diffusion. Therefore we analyzed the correlation between chloride ion diffusion and physical properties such as compressive strength, void ratio, air permeability of the concrete, and tried to use them as fundamental data for analyzing chloride ion diffusion mechanism of the concrete mixed with mineral admixtures.

A Study on the Fluidity Retention of Cement Paste Added by Naphthalene Sulfonated Condensate and Polycarboxylic Acid Admixture (나프탈렌술폰산축합물과 폴리카르본산계 혼화제가 첨가된 시멘트 페이스트의 유동성 유지에 관한 연구)

  • Naphthalene sulfonated condensate has been widely used as a superplasticizer for cement and concrete, but the application was limited due to its large slump loss with elapsed time. To complement this demerit of NSF, polycarboxylic acid copolymer from nlaleic anhydride and acryl~c acid(MA) was synthesized to retain the mobility of cement and concrete, and then mixed with NSF. The physical properties, such as fluidity, fluidityretention and rheology, were measured by applying these admixtures to cement paste as a function of elapsed time. And also compressive strength of mortar was measured with curing time. NIv-l and NM-2 containing 10, 20 wt% of MA respectively had a excellent fluidity and a fluidity- retention. In rheological property, the increases of shear stress and viscosity with elapsed time were delayed with the increasing of shear rate in cornparision with NSF only. The marked slump loss of cement paste could be controlled by these admixture. Also the added ainount of admixture and the ratio of water to cement affected these properties.

Field Applicability Evaluation of SB Latex-Modified Concrete for Concrete Bridge Deck Overlay (콘크리트 교면 덧씌우기를 위한 SB 라텍스개질 콘크리트의 현장적용성 평가)

  • This study focused on the field applicability evaluation of SB latex-modified concrete (LMC) for concrete bridge deck overlay using mobile mixer. The main experimental factors were water-cement ratio(31, 33, 35 37%), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), and fine aggregate ratio(55, 56, 57, 58%) in order to evaluate the workability, mechanical properties, and durability property of LMC. The slump loss, air content, compressive and flexible strength tests were used to evaluate LMC workability and strength properties. Also, the rapid chloride permeability test was used to evaluate the relative permeability of LMC. As a results, the LMC with enough workability and good quality was produced when it was mixed in field using mobile mixer, satisfying the target compressive strength and flexural strength. The required water-cement ratio of LMC for same workability when mixing with mobile mixer was less than that when mixing in laboratory. Increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength by mobile mixer. The required cement-water ratios for same initial $19{\pm}3cm$ slump were 37% and 33% at laboratory and mobile mixer, respectively. The mobile mixer was accurately calibrated satisfying the required specification.

A Study on Accelerated Corrosion Test by Combined Deteriorating Action of Salt Damage and Freeze-Thaw (염해 및 동결융해의 복합열화 작용에 의한 부식촉진시험에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the accelerated corrosion test by combined deteriorating action of salt damage and freeze-thaw was investigated. freeze-thaw cycle is one method for corrosion testing; corrosion initiation time was measured in four types of concrete samples, i.e., two samples mixed with fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BS), and the other two samples having two water/cement ratio (W/C = 0.6, 0.35) without admixture (OPC60 and OPC35). The corrosion of rebar embedded in concrete occurred most quickly at the $30^{th}$ freeze-thaw cycle. Moreover, a corrosion monitoring method with a half-cell potential measurement and relative dynamic elastic modulus derived from resonant frequency measures was conducted simultaneously. The results indicated that the corrosion of rebar occurred when the relative dynamic elastic modulus was less than 60%. Therefore, dynamic elastic modulus can be used to detect corrosion of steel bar. The results of the accelerated corrosion test exhibited significant difference according to corrosion periods combined with each test condition. Consequently, the OPC60 showed the lowest corrosion resistance among the samples.

An Experimental Study for Recycling of the Waste PET Bottle as a Fine Aggregate for Lightweight Concrete (폐 PET 병을 경량콘크리트용 잔골재로 재활용하기 위한 실험적 연구)

  • The qualify of lightweight aggregate made from waste PET bottle(WPLA) and the workability, the unit weight and strength property of concrete with WPLA were investigated for the purpose of recycling the waste PET bottles as lightweight concrete fine aggregate. This study indicated a good result that WPLA should be replaced with less than $50\%$ of natural fine aggregate. When WPLA was replaced with $50\%$ of natural fine aggregate, the specific gravity and water absorption of mixed fine aggregate were greatly reduced about 23 and $75\%$ respectively in comparison with those of river sand. The quality of WPLA affected on the properties of lightweight aggregate concrete. The workability of fresh concrete with WPLA(WPLAC) was improved with increasing the replacement ratio of WPLA and water cement ratio. Slump increasing ratio of the former showed about $45 {\~} 120\%$ because that a specific gravity of fine aggregate was decreased from 2.6 to 1.7. The unit weight of concrete with $75\%$ WPLA was decreased about $17\%$ in comparison with that of control concrete. Furthermore, the compressive strength of concrete with 25 and $50 \%$ WPLA at the age of 28 days increased higher than 30 MPa regardless with water cement ratio (W/C=45, 49 and $53\%$) of this study. Specific strength of concrete with $25\%$ WPLA, $15.11{\times}10^3 MPa{\cdot}m^3/kg$, was higher than that of contro concrete in water cement ratio of $49\%$. The compressive strength-splitting tensile strength ratio and compressive strength-modulus of elasticity ratio of WPLAC were similar to that of nomal lightweight aggregate concrete. This results showed a good estimation that WPLA will be able to recycled as a fine aggregate for lightweight concrete.

Property Evaluation of the Concrete Replacing 5-13mm Recycled Coarse Aggregates (5~13mm 입도분급 순환 굵은 골재 혼합사용에 따른 콘크리트의 특성평가)

  • This paper is to investigate experimentally the effect of substitution of recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) under 13mm on the engineering properties of the concrete using gap graded coarse aggregates. Concretes with 0.4 of water to cement ratio(W/C) were fabricated to achieve 30MPa of design strength with coarse aggregate over 13mm in size with the maximum size of 25mm. RCA was substituted for coarse aggregate over 13mm from 10% to 50% and crushed coarse aggregate under 13mm was also substituted for coarse aggregate over 13mm from 20% to 40%, respectively. Test results indicated that the replacement of RCA up to 20% resulted in an increase of fluidity and strength. It also caused a decrease in the drying shrinkage due to dense packing effect by achieving continuous grading of mixed aggregates. For practical application of RCA, when properly substituted, the use of RCA enabled the concrete to reduce water contents and sand to aggregate ratio in mixing design stage of the concrete. And, it can also enhance the compressive strength of the concrete.

Characteristics of sound absorption materials by using ecological aggregates (에코골재를 사용한 흡음재의 특성)

  • Ecological lightweight aggregates were made by using the wastes come from various industrial fields. Wastes were crushed and pulverized by mills and a certain portions of wastes were mixed and formed by pelletizer like small beads. The formed lightweight aggregates were finally sintered with $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min conditions by using rotary kiln. Lightweight concrete sound absorbers were made of ecological lightweight aggregates K73 (Coal bottom ash 70 wt%: Dredged soil 30 wt%) and K631 (Clay 60 wt%: Stone sludge 30 wt%: Spent bleaching clay 10 wt%). For the reference, lightweight concrete sound absorbers made of DL (German made 'L' company LWA) were also made under the same conditions. Sound absorption characteristics were observed and measured according to the kinds of aggregates, water/cement ratio (W/C=20, 25, and 30%), and designed pore rates (V=20, 25, and 30%). The pore rates of the lightweight concrete sound absorber were turned out to be 5 to 10% higher than designed ones. Absorption coefficient of the lightweight concrete sound absorber by using K631 aggregates with W/C=20% and V=25% conditions was 0.88 at 1000 and 3150 Hz from the measurement by the impedance tube.

A Study on Chloride Threshold Level of Blended Cement Mortar Using Polarization Resistance Method (분극저항 측정기법을 이용한 혼합 시멘트 모르타르의 임계 염화물 농도에 대한 연구)

  • The importance of chloride ions in the corrosion of steel in concrete has led to the concept for chloride threshold level (CTL). The CTL can be defined as the content of chlorides at the steel depth that is necessary to sustain local passive film breakdown and hence initiate the corrosion process. Despite the importance of the CTL, due to the uncertainty determining the actual limits in various environments for chloride-induced corrosion, conservative values such as 0.4% by weight of cement or 1.2 kg in 1 $m^3$ concrete have been used in predicting the corrosion-free service life of reinforced concrete structures. The paper studies the CTL for blended cement concrete by comparing the resistance of cementitious binder to the onset of chloride-induced corrosion of steel. Mortar specimens were cast with centrally located steel rebar of 10 mm in diameter using cementitious mortars with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and mixed mortars replaced with 30% pulverized fuel ash (PFA), 60% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and 10% silica fume (SF), respectively, at 0.4 of a free W/B ratio. Chlorides were admixed in mixing water ranging 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% by weight of binder(Based on $C1^-$). Specimens were curd 28 days at the room temperature, wrapped in polyethylene film to avoid leaching out of chloride and hydroxyl ions. Then the corrosion rate was measured using the polarization resistance method and the order of CTL for binder was determined. Thus, CTL of OPC, 60%GGBS, 30%PFA and 10%SF were determined by 1.6%, 0.45%, 0.8% and 2.15%, respectively.

An Experimental Study on the Properties of Engineering and Shrinkage Cracking Reduction of Fiber Reinforced Concrete Using Recycled Fine Aggregate (섬유보강 순환잔골재 콘크리트의 공학적 특성 및 수축균열저감특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, the study is progressing actively about manufacture skill of concrete for promoted recycled aggregate and concrete made into recycled aggregate in the construction production field. But, application and study about recycled fine aggregate insufficient compared to recycled coarse aggregate. So, in this study, it presents basic data for development of environmental load reduction fiber reinforcement recycled fine aggregate concrete by comparison and investigation about engineering properties and shrinkage cracking of fiber reinforcement recycled find aggregate concrete for increasing shrinkage cracking reduction and long term stability of environmental load reduction concrete used recycled fine aggregate. In the result of the study, compared to natural fine aggregate, a crack-extent increased by applying recycled fine aggregate, moreover, as a water cement ratio increased, the crack size increased, as well. In addition, it's shown that the specimen mixed with PVA and Nylon, among all kinds of fibers, showed the smallest crack size, so it's verified that the mix of fiber had an effect on decreasing crack-extent.
