  • In this study, water-based acrylic tackifier with different contents of 1-dodecanethiol(n-DM), a chain transfer agent(CTA), were synthesized to improve the performance and adhesive properties of water-based acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA). In order to investigate the change in physical properties according to the amount of water-based acrylic tackifier added, 10/20/30 phr of water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion to measure the physical properties. The molecular weight and glass transition temperature(Tg) of the synthesized water-based acrylic tackifier tended to decrease as the content of n-DM increased. When a water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion, the peel strength and heat-resistance were increased. Also, when the water-based acrylic tackifiers were added at 10 phr or 20 phr, the best value was shown.

  • Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used as tackifiers in many applications. In particular, hydrogenated DCPD-based hydrocarbon resins are widely used in premium hot-melt-type adhesives such as hot melt adhesives (HMAs) and/or hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSAs), because are water-white in color and possess excellent stability to light and heat. This article discusses the adhesive performance of various hydrogenated DCPD resins when they are used as tackifiers in styrene-block-copolymer (SBC)-based HMPSAs. This article shows the correlation between the characteristics of tackifiers and the adhesive performance of SBC-based HMPSAs. The higher the softening point of the tackifier, the higher is the $T_g$, softening point, and crossover temperature of the PSAs. High aromatic H wt% content reduces the high-temperature resistance of PSAs, as suggested by the decrease in the crossover temperature and softening point of the PSAs.

  • It is a main trend not to use organic solvents in the adhesive industry from the recent environmental and safe points of view. For example, water-based, hot-melt, or UV curable adhesives are being investigated. Several different kinds of tackifiers that are formulated in the adhesives in order to give them more functional properties like initial tack and higher adhesion, etc., have been proposed to meet the recent trend. Firstly, the characteristics and fundamental properties of the respective materials are presented. In Japan, the trend to develop the water-based adhesives is most remarkable. While the environmental regulations are getting harder, Arakawa Chemical has been spending a lot of energy for the research, and developed toluene-free and solvent free tackifier dispersions that are presented precisely.

  • There has been a growing demand for water based-type PSA due to environmental regulations for solvent-type PSA. And accordingly, there is a growing expectation as well for tackifiers used to compensate for the problem of deterioration of physical properties. Therefore, In this study, water-based tackifiers were synthesized by changing the contents of hard and functional acrylic monomers CHMA, IBOA, and AA. And these were added to the pressure-sensitive adhesive at 10 phr and their physical properties were compared. Tackiness slightly decreased as CHMA increased and IBOA decreased. Since the intermolecular bonding force increased due to the increase in AA content, the lower the AA content showed better results. Peel strength increased as the tackifiers were added because the fluidity of the polymer chain increased. And higher AA content showed better results because more hydrogen bonds were formed. The holding power tended to decrease as CHMA increased because the content of IBOA relatively decreased which has a large influence on the holding power. And higher AA content showed better results.

  • Common adhesives contain harmful chemicals, posing risks to humans and the environment. Basil seeds, an underutilized resource, can offer a solution. We extracted mucilage from basil seeds and found that altering the basil seed mucilage (BSM) to water ratio allowed us to control the adhesive strength. As the concentration of BSM increased and the water evaporated, adhesive strength improved. BSM can serve as both an adhesive and pressure-sensitive adhesive. This research showcases BSM's impressive strength and stability, making it a promising eco-friendly industrial adhesive option from plant-based sources, revolutionizing the adhesive industry.
