This study reports on the preparation of sodium caseinate-cardanol (CasNa/CL)-based papers coated with different amounts of bentonite (BN) for use as a sustainable packaging material. Their chemical and morphological structures, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, surface properties, and antioxidant activity of coated papers was assessed as a function of the BN content. The drying of the CasNa/CL coated papers led to the formation of pinholes on their surfaces owing to the presence of trapped water resulting from the difference in the drying rate between the external surface and the inside of the coated layers. Increasing the BN content reduced the pinholes on surface of CasNa/CL/BN coated papers and highly decreased the water vapor transmittance rate of the papers from 387.3±1.9 g/m2·day to 269.25±4.5 g/m2·day. Free radical scavenging assays indicated the addition of CL to the CasNa exhibited the antioxidant activity and antioxidant activity of CasNa/CL/BN did not changed as increase of BN contents. The improved water vapor barrier property and antioxidant activity of CasNa/CL/BN coated papers can be promised for various packaging applications.
An experiment was conducted using a sand and gravel-filled tank model, to investigate the influence on the GPR response of vadose zone gasoline vapor phase effects and residual gasoline distributed by a fluctuating water table. After background GPR measurements were made with only water in the tank, gasoline was injected into the bottom of the model tank to simulate a subsurface discharge from a leaking pipe or tank. Results from the experiment show the sensitivity of GPR to the changes in the moisture content and its effectiveness for monitoring minor fluctuation of the water table. The results also demonstrate a potential of GPR for detecting possible vapor phase effects of volatile hydrocarbons in the vadose zone as a function of time, and for detecting the effects of residual phase of hydrocarbons in the water saturated system. In addition, the results provide the basis for a strategy that has the potential to successfully detect and delineate LNAPL contamination at field sites where zones of residual LNAPL in the water saturated system are present in the subsurface.
In this paper, the difference of the property of absorption and desorption for five species in semi-steady state are studied. The species used are listed in Table 1 and the dimension of specimen was $8\times8{\times}T$(Tangential direction)cm and tested in various conditions. A change of average moisture content with time were measured in each cycles. The results obtained are summarized as follows. When the relative humidity in air was maximum or minimum, the distribution of moisture In wood of all specimens were illustrated by exponential curves of decrease or increased from lace 10 center of wood. From the consideration of coefficient of decrease(C), the amount of moisture change of spruce was larger than the others. The pheonomenon was considered no relation to the specific gravity in air dry, but the wood structures. The velocity of the absorption and desorption for species decreased in the order spruce(Picea sitchensis) neodobam(Fagus crenata), solsong(Tsuga heterophylla), meranti(Shorea sp.) and kaesoo(Cercidiphyllum japoicum). In case of constant temperature and water vapor pressure is changed. the amount of absorbed moisture was larger than that of constant water vapor pressure and temperature vaned. In this fact, it is considered that the property of sorption of wood is strongly influenced by vapor pressure gradient than temperature gradient.
Using the FSSP-100(FSSP) and Microwave Radiometer (MWR), the fog and clear day characteristics (the size and number concentration of fog particles and the liquid water content) have been measured and analyzed at Daegwallyoung observation site ($37^{\circ}41^{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$) during 27 - 30 November 2003 (fog day) and 19 January 2004 (clear day). During the fog days, the measured fog-particle size by using FSSP is 0.8~8.4 ${\mu}m$, which is similar to the WMO typical value, the fog number concentration varies from 121 to 200 count ($No./cm^2$) and the fog liquid water content from $0.018g/m^3-0.1g/m^3$ in the site. The precipitable water vapor obtained by the MWR, showing the correlation coefficient $R^2$=0.83 between the total precipitable water vapor obtained from the radio sonde and MWR, shows the larger amount (0.75-8.3 cm) during the fog days than the clear-sky data (0.2 cm).
The formation mechanism of unstable alkali and its existing states in the clinker were studied. The relation of unstable alkali content vs. other water-soluble components porosity and the distributionof potassium were investigated. The results are as follows :1) Two states of unstable alkali seem to exist in clinker ie compounds of $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ system and free $K_2O$ 2) The content of water-soluble $Al_2O_3$ tends to increase with increase of unstable alkali content, 3) Most of alkalies in clinker are concentrated in liquid phase at high temperature. Therefore it is possible to make various $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ system compounds according to the content of $K_2O$ in the liquid phase of clinker. In this experiment we found out a $K_2O-Al_2O_3$ compound of high $Al_2O_3$ content (34%) and high $K_2O$ content (33%) in clinker with 1.09% unstable alkali. 4) The porosity of clinker tends to increase with increase of unstable alkali content. 5) The amount of trapped alkali vapor may increase in closed pore in the clinker with high alkali and low $SO_3$ condecent. Therefore free $K_2O$ is the condensed alkali on the wall of closed pore in the clinker.
Meteorological and soil water content data measured from semiarid watersheds of Lucky Hills and Kendall during the summer rainy and winter periods were used to study the interrelationships between the controlling variables of the evapotranspiration, and to evaluate the effects of variables on daily actual evapotranspiration (ET) estimation. Simple and multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses were employed to evaluate the order of importance of the meteorological and soil water factors involved. The information gained was used for MLR model development. Theavailable energy and vapor pressure deficit were found to be the important variables to estimate actual ET (AET) for both periods and at both watersheds. Therefore, the important variables of evapotranspiration process in these semiarid watersheds appear to be simply the components of energy term in available energy and aerodynamic term in vapor pressure deficit of Penman potential evapotranspiration (PET) equation.
Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is known to be an effective process to remove the contaminants from the soils by enhancing the vaporization of organic compounds using forced vapor flows or applying vacuum through soils. Experiments are carried out to investigate the effects of the organic contaminants, types of soils, and water contents on the removal efficiency with operating time. In the study, simulated soils include the glass bead which has no micropore, sand and molecular sieve which has a large volume of micropores. As model organic pollutants, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, and trichloroethylene are selected. Desorption experiments are conducted by flowing nitrogen gas. Under the experimental conditions, it is found that there are linear relationships between logarithm of removal efficiency and logarithm of number of pore volumes. The number of pore volumes are defined as the total amount of air flow through the soil column divided by the pore volume of soil column. For three organic compounds studied, the removal rate is slow for no water content, while the number of pore volumes for removal of organic compounds are notably reduced for water contents up to 37%. For the removal of dense organic compound, such as trichloroethylene, a large number of pore volumes are needed. Also, the effects of the characteristics of simulated soils on the removal efficiency of organic compounds are studied. After the characterization of soil surface, porosity of soil columns and types of contaminants, the results could provide a basis for the design of SVE process.

Structural light weight aggregate concrete are made with both coarse and fine light weight aggregates, but it is common with the high strength concrete to replace all or part with normal weight sand be called class 1 structural light weight aggregate concrete. Fire resistance of structural light weight aggregate concrete are determined by properties of high water content ratio and explosive spalling. Especially, structural light weight aggregate concrete is occurred serious fire performance deterioration by explosive spalling stem from thermal stress and water vapor pressure. This study is concerned with experimentally investigating fire resistance of class 1 structural light weight concrete. From the test result, class 1 structural light weight concrete is happened explosive spalling. The decrease of cross section caused by explosive spalling made sharp increasing gradient of inner temperature.
The next generation nuclear power reactor will use Pb-Bi as the cooling material. The steel structure materials such as HT-9 used in the reactor suffer from corrosion when they are exposed to high temperature Pb-Bi. Therefore corrosion should be prevented to use Pb-Bi as the coolant material without any safety problem. One method is to control the oxygen content in Pb-Bi. An appropriate amount of oxygen in Pb-Bi can produce a thin oxide layer on steel, and this layer protects the steel from corrosion attack. Since the required oxygen content in Pb-Bi is in the range of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7}$ wt%, this small oxygen content can be controlled by flowing a mixture of hydrogen gas and water vapor. The stagnant corrosion test of HT-9 samples was performed by controlling the oxygen content up to 2,000 hours. The corrosion behavior of HT-9 was analyzed at the temperatures of $500^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ with a reduced condition and a oxygen content of $10^{-6}$ wt%.

The DISCOVER Project (${\underline{D}}istributed$${\underline{I}}nformation$${\underline{S}}ervices$ for ${\underline{C}}limate$ and ${\underline{O}}cean$ products and ${\underline{V}}isualizations$ for ${\underline{E}}arth$${\underline{R}}esearch$) is a NASA funded Earth Science REASoN project that strives to provide highly accurate, carefully calibrated, long-term climate data records and near-real-time ocean products suitable for the most demanding Earth research applications via easy-to-use display and data access tools. A key element of DISCOVER is the merging of data from the multiple sensors on multiple platforms into geophysical data sets consistent in both time and space. The project is a follow-on to the SSM/I Pathfinder and Passive Microwave ESIP projects which pioneered the simultaneous retrieval of sea surface temperature, surface wind speed, columnar water vapor, cloud liquid water content, and rain rate from SSM/I and TMI observations. The ocean products available through DISCOVER are derived from multi-sensor observations combined into daily products and a consistent multi-decadal climate time series. The DISCOVER team has a strong track record in identifying and removing unexpected sources of systematic error in radiometric measurements, including misspecification of SSM/I pointing geometry, the slightly emissive TMI antenna, and problems with the hot calibration source on AMSR-E. This in-depth experience with inter-calibration is absolutely essential for achieving our objective of merging multi-sensor observations into consistent data sets. Extreme care in satellite inter-calibration and commonality of geophysical algorithms is applied to all sensors. This presentation will introduce the DISCOVER products currently available from the web site, http://www.discover-earth.org and provide examples of the scientific application of both the diurnally corrected optimally interpolated global sea surface temperature product and the 4x-daily global microwave water vapor product.
