  • This paper reports the effects of coarse and fine recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) on fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) as cement replacement. For this purpose, three SCC mixes groups, were produced at a constant water to binder ratio of 0.38. Both fine and coarse recycled aggregates were used as natural aggregates (NA) replacement at different substitution levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% by volume for each mix group. Each group, included 0, 15% or 30% GGBFS as Portland cement replacement by weight. The SCC properties investigated were self-compactability parameters (i.e., slump flow, T500 time, V-funnel flow time, L-box passing ability and sieve stability), compressive strength, capillary water absorption and water penetration depth. The results show that the combined use of RCA with GGBFS had a significant effect on fresh and hardened SCC mixes. The addition of both fine and coarse recycled aggregates as a substitution up to 50% of natural aggregates enhance the workability of SCC mixes, whereas the addition from 50 to 100% decreases the workability, whatever the slag content used as cement replacement. An enhancement of workability of SCC mixes with recycled aggregates was noticed as increasing GGBFS from 0 to 30%. RCA content of 25% to 50% as NA replacement and cement replacement of 15% GGBFS seems to be the optimum level to produce satisfactory SCC without any bleeding or segregation. Furthermore, the addition of slag to recycled concrete aggregates of SCC mixes reduces strength losses at the long term (56 and 90 days). However, a decrease in the capillary water absorption and water permeability depth was noticed, when using RCA mixes with slag.

  • In this study the relative dynamic modulus and surface rebound hardness measurement methods were used for comparison to predict the occurrence of frost dam age on the concrete. From the test results, it was observed that the initiation of concrete dam age predicted by surface rebound hardness values was 200 cycles quicker than that of the relative dynamic modulus method in the W/C 70 specimens. In addition, it continuously provided data that showed the frost damage development of concrete surfaces according to increasing freeze-thaw cycles. This indicated that the frost dam age of the concrete could be found from the initial point of its occurrence by the surface rebound hardness measurement method. Similar results were also observed in W/C 60 and 50 specimens. Therefore, it is considered that surface rebound hardness method predicted the freeze-thaw damage well, regardless of water-cement ratio.

  • Treatment of solid waste building materials is a crucial method of disposal and an area of ongoing research. New standards for the treatment of solid waste building materials are necessary due to multisource features, huge quantities, and complicated compositions of solid waste. In this research, sustainable nanomaterial mixtures containing nano-paper waste (NPW) and nano-metakaolin (NMK) were used as a substitute for Portland cement. Portland cement was replaced with different ratios of NPW and NMK (0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% by weight of cement) while the cement-to-water ratio remained constant at 0.4 in all mortar mixtures. The fresh properties had a positive effect on them, and with the increase in the percentage of replacement, the fresh properties decreased. The results of compressive strength at 7 and 28 days and flexural strength at 28 days show that the nanomaterials improved the strength, but the results of NMK were better than those of NPW. The best replacement rate was 8%, followed by 4%, and finally 12% for both materials. The combination of NMK and NPW as a replacement (12% NMK + 12% NPW) showed less shrinkage than the others because of the high pozzolanic reactivity of the nanomaterials. The combination of NMK and NPW improved the microstructure by increasing the hydration volume and lowering the water in the cement matrix, as clearly observed in the C-S-H decomposition.

  • Test specimens of polymer-cement concrete composites were prepared using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylenevinyl acetate(EVA) and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsions as polymer dispersions in cement modified system at constant slump($10{\pm}0.5cm$), then compressive and flexural strengths water absorption, pore size distribution, and microstructures were investigated. Compressive and flexural strengths of these composites were remarkably improved with an increase of polymer-cement ratio. These composites had a desirable pore size distribution against frost damage due to a small capillary pore volume. Continuous polymer film was able to form in higher than 15% of polymer cement ratio.

  • When concrete structures are exposed to sulfate or marin environments, sulfate ions penetrated into concrete make it deteriorate. An accelerated test under potential difference method was performed to evaluate not only the sulfate ion diffusivity in ordinary portland cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement concretes but the effect of slag replacement and water-cement ratio on the sulfate ions diffusivity. As the result of this study, we assumed the sulfate ion diffusivity was significantly related with total passed charge and initial current in concrete. Moreover sulfate ions penetration resistance of ordinary portland cement concrete was superior to that of ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate (MMA/BA) latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. From the test results, the total pore volume of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is linearly reduced with an increase in the bound MMA content and increased in the polymer-cement ratio. In general, the superior flexural and compressive strength of polymer-modified mortars using MMA/BA latexes is obtained at a bound MMA content of 70 or 80 percent and a polymer-cement ratio of 15%. And, the water absorption and chloride ion penetration depth are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the bound MMA content.

  • This study investigated the effect of surface water on concrete substrate on adhesive strength in tension of very high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar. The specimens were prepared with proportionally mixing SBR latex, ordinary portland cement, silica sand, superplasticizer and viscosity enhancing agent. Polymer cement ratio (P/C) were 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75% and the weight ratio of fine aggregate to cement were 1:1 and 1:3. The specimens obtained with different P/C and C:F were characterized by unit weight, flow test, crack resistance and adhesion test. After basic tests, two mixtures of P/C=20% and 30% in case of C:F=1:1, and one mixture of P/C=50% in case of C:F=1:3 were selected, respectively. These three selected specimens were studied about the effect of surface water evenly sprayed on concrete substrate by a amount of 0, 0.006, 0.012, 0.017, 0.024g per unit area ($cm^2$) of concrete substrate surface The results show that surface water on concrete substrate increases the adhesive strength in tension of high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar and improve the flowability compared to the non-sprayed case.

  • Experiments were divided into two parts; one part is to understand the basic properties of high flowable VA/VeoVa-modified cement mortar with different polymer cement ratio (P/C) and the weight ratio of fine aggregate to cement (C:F) and the other part is to investigate the effect of surface water spread on the concrete substrate on adhesion in tension. To understand the basic performance, the specimens were prepared with proportionally mixing VA/VeoVa redispersible powder, ordinary portland cement, silica sand, superplasticizer and viscosity enhancing agent. Here, P/C were 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75% and C:F were 1:1 and 1:3. As the change of P/C and C:F unit weight, flow test, crack resistance and adhesion in tension were measured. Three specimens with good adhesion properties were selected among specimens with different P/C and C:F. The effect of surface water evenly sprayed on concrete substrate on adhesive strength is investigated. The results show that surface water on concrete substrate increases the adhesion in tension of high flowable VA/VeoVa-modified cement mortar and additionally improves the flowability compared to the non-sprayed case.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcment is the most significant factor of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Chloride ion is considered one of the most common culprits in the corrosion of steel in concrete. It breaks down the passive film and allows the steel to corrode actively at a high rate. The main objective of this study is to determine the critical chloride ion concentrations in the pore solutions and chloride binding effect of cement pastes made with and without fly ash. Cement pastes with water-binder ratio of 0.5, allowed to hydrate in sealed containers for 28 days and to express pore solution. The expressed pore fluids were analyzed for chloride and hydroxyl ion concentrations. Evaporable water on paralled specimens was determined a.s the loss of weight per 100g of unhydreded cement when the specimens were heated to constant weight at 105'C. It was found that the replaced cement with fly ash has negligible influnce on the chloride binding and chloride binding capacity and rises the $Cl^-$ /$OH^-$ ratio in pore solution.
