PURPOSES: This study is to evaluate a ground water level effect on frost heaving in road pavements. METHODS: The effects of water table on frost heaving in pavement systems were evaluated from the mechanical analysis using FROST program. The input parameters and boundary conditions were determined by considering climates, pavement sections, and material properties specially subgrade soil types in Korea. RESULTS: When the water table located above the freezing depth, amount of frost heaving caused by freezing the water in pavement itself was big enough to damage in pavement system, although pavement system consists of fully non-frost-susceptible materials with sufficient thickness of anti-freezing layer. The amount of frost heaving was decreased rapidly with increasing the distance between the water table and freezing depth. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there is no engineering problems related with frost heaving in practical sense when the distance between freezing depth and water table is over 1.5m for having subgrade soils less than 50% of #200 sieve passing to meet specification on quality control in Korea.
In order to evaluate the TOPMODEL's prediction ability for spatial distribution of water table depths, two major assumptions and governing equation of water table depth are tested. For the test, data of hydrological observations are used and a soil survey is made in the steep hillslope with thin soils. Responses of water table and hydraulic properties of soil are coincident with two major assumptions of the TOPMODEL's such as water table gradient parallel to the local topographical slope and exponential decline in transmissivity with depths. Soil texture and the decline rate of transmissivity(f) we homogeneous in space at the 0∼0.3m depths of the soil of the hillslope, but they are heterogeneous in space below its 0.3m depths due to the vertical change of soil texture and the ‘f’. It is shown that the TOPMODEL's equation can be used for simulating distribution of water table depth at the depths with uniform values of the 'f'.
Excessive water stress is one of major limiting factors affecting soybean yield, especially when soybean is grown in converted upland from paddy field. The present study was undertaken to know the genotypic variation in yield response of soybean to different environments in combination with soil texture and underground water table depth. Eight recommended soybean varieties in Korea and two supernodulating soybean mutants introduced from USA were planted in the lysimeter which was filled with two different soil types(sandy loam and clay loam). Of three underground water table depths(10, 30, and 50 cm) during whole growth stage, the lowest 10 cm was included to create excessive water stress. Yield was significantly different according to the underground water table depth and soybean genotypes, whereas soil type did not affect yield. There were significant interaction effects of soybean yield among soil type, soybean genotype, and underground water table depth. Yield of nts 1116 showed the highest across environments. Based on the regression analysis, the most stable variety was Sobaeknamulkong(bi=1.09). Jangsukong was fairly stable and high in yield, when compared to other soybean genotypes. However, nts 1116 was the most desirable ($D_i=228$) mainly due to the highest yield rather than the greater stability over environments. Multiple regression analysis revealed that shoot dry weight and nodule number were major factors affecting yield in the combined data over three water table depths and two soil types.
The most effective way to distinguish subsurface interfaces that produce various geophysical responses is through the integration of multiple geophysical methods, with each method detecting both a complementary and unique set of distinct physical properties relating to the subsurface. In this study, shallow seismic reflection (SSR) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at the Cheongju-Gadeok site of the Korea National Groundwater Monitoring Network to map the water table, which was measured at 12 m depth during the geophysical surveys. The water table proved to be a good target reflector in both datasets, as the abrupt transition from the overlying unsaturated weathered rock to the underlying saturated weathered rock yielded large acoustic impedance and dielectric constant contrasts. The two datasets were depth converted and integrated into a single section, with the SSR and GPR surveys conducted to ensure subsurface imaging at approximately the same wavelength. The GPR data provided detailed information on the upper ~15 m of the section, whereas the SSR data imaged structures at depths of 10-45 m. The integrated section thus captured the full depth coverage of the sandy clay, water table, weathered rock, soft rock, and hard rock structures, which correlated well with local drillcore and water table observations. Incorporation of these two geophysical datasets yielded a synthetic section that resembled a simplified aquifer model, with the best-fitting seismic velocity, dielectric constant, and porosity of the saturated weathered layer being $v_{seismic}=1000m/s$, ${\varepsilon}_r=16$, and ${\phi}=0.32$, respectively.

Models of cross-sections and channels were made in order to measure seepage losses. Cross-sections were made of sand, sandy clay loam and loam, their thicknesses being 30cm and 40cm, respectively. Flow depths kept in the cross-sections were 4cm, 6cm, 8cm and 10cm. Straight and curved channel models were provided so as to measure seepage losses, when constant water depths maintained at the heads of the channels were 7.3cm and 5.7cm, respectively. The results obtained in this experiment are presented as follows: 1) A cumulative seepage loss per unit length at a point in the channel varies in accordance with time and flow depth. The general equation of cumulative seepage loss may be as follows(Ref. to Table V.25): $$q_{cum}=\int_{o}^aq(a)dt+\int_a^bq(b)dt+\int_b^tq(c)dt$$ 2) In case that the variation of water depth through the channel is slight, the total seepage loss may be computed by applying the following general equation: $$\={q}_{cum}{\cdot}x=\int_o^tq_{cum}\frac{{\partial}x}{{\partial}t}dt$$ 3) Because seepage loss varies considerably according to water depth in case that the variation of flow depth through the channel is great, seepage loss should be computed by taking account of the change of flow depth. 4) The relation between time and traveling distance of water flow may be presented as the following general equation(Ref. to Table V.29): $$x=pt^r$$ 5) The ratios of the seepage losses of the straight channel to the curved channel are 1:1.03 for a flow depth of 7.3cm and 1:1.068 for that of 5.7cm. 6) The ratios of the seepage losses occurring through the bottom to those through the inclined plane in the channel cross-section are 1:2.24 for a water depth of 8cm and 1:2.47 for a depth of 10cm in case that soil-layer is 30cm in thickness. Similarly, those ratios are 1:2.62 and 1:2.93 in case of a soil-layer thickness of 40cm(Ref. to Table V.5).
This paper presents a novel methodology for face stability assessment of rock tunnels under water table by combining the kinematical approach of limit analysis and numerical simulation. The tunnels considered in this paper are excavated in fractured rock masses characterized by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. In terms of natural rock deposition, a more convincing case of depth-dependent mi, GSI, D and ${\sigma}_c$ is taken into account by proposing the horizontally layered discretization technique, which enables us to generate the failure surface of tunnel face point by point. The vertical distance between any two adjacent points is fixed, which is beneficial to deal with stability problems involving depth-dependent rock parameters. The pore water pressure is numerically computed by means of 3D steady-state flow analyses. Accordingly, the pore water pressure for each discretized point on the failure surface is obtained by interpolation. The parametric analysis is performed to show the influence of depth-dependent parameters of $m_i$, GSI, D, ${\sigma}_c$ and the variation of water table elevation on tunnel face stability. Finally, several design charts for an undisturbed tunnel are presented for quick calculations of critical support pressures against face failure.

Earthquake preparedness has become more important with recent increase in the number of earthquakes in Korea, but many existing structures are not prepared for earthquakes. There are various types of liquefaction prevention method that can be applied, such as compaction, replacement, dewatering, and inhibition of shear strain. However, most of the liquefaction prevention methods are applied before construction, and it is important to find optimal methods that can be applied to existing structures and that have few effects on the environment, such as noise, vibration, and changes in underground water level. The purpose of this study is to estimate the correlation between the displacement of a structure and variations of pore water pressure on the ground in accordance with the depth of the sheet file when liquidation occurs. To achieve this, a shaking table test was performed for Joo-Mun-Jin standard sand and an earth pressure, accelerometer, pore water pressure transducer, and LVDT were installed in both the non-liquefiable layer and the liquefiable layer to measure the subsidence and excess pore water pressure in accordance with the time of each embedded depth. Then the results were analyzed. A comparison of the pore water pressure in accordance with Hsp/Hsl was shown to prevent lateral water flow at 1, 0.85 and confirmed that the pore water pressure increased. In addition, the relationship between Hsp/Hsl and subsidence was expressed as a trend line to calculate the expected settlement rate formula for the embedded depth ratio.

Experimental studies were conducted to make clear the soil moisture environment under the condition of paddy-upland rotational fields by investigating water-table depths and soil moisture contents during growing season of crops in two kinds of soil. The following results were obtained. 1.Although water-table depths fluctuated with the amount of rainfall in the experimental field, it seemed that the variation of vater4able depths in the paddy-upland rotational, field was strongly affected by the condition of locations on paddy fields. 2.It is recognized that the concept of sum of excess water depth(SEWxx) and sum of excess water day(SEDxx) can be used to represent the soil moisture stress index due to the fluctuation of water-table depths. 3.The results of this study clearly indicate that drainage in paddy-upland rotational field to maintain an optimum soil moisture content must be made by introducing the concept of block drainage which needs both subsurface drainage and intercept drainage around a field. 4.Soil moisture contents were affected by both the amount of rainfall and water-table depths, however, the moisture content for top soil showed higher correlation with the amount of rainfall while that for subsoil with water-table depths.
The multi-functional one-chip sensor has been fabricated to reduce output variation under various water environment. There were a temperature sensor, a piezoresistive type pressure sensor, and a electrode type conductivity sensor in the fabricated one-chip sensor. This sensor was measured water depth in the range of $0{\sim}180cm$, temperature in the range of $0{\sim}50^{\circ}C$, and salinity in the range of 0 $0wt%{\sim}5wt%$, respectively. Since the change of water depth in solution environment depends on various factors such as salinity, latitude, temperature, and atmospheric pressure, the water depth sensor is needed to be compensated. We tried to compensate the salinity and temperature dependence for the pressure in water by using lookup-table method.

This study examined the relationship between Phragmites australis' growth and sediment properties at mud tidal flat of Donggum-ri, Gilsang-myeon, Gangwha-gun, Incheon city. Field survey was carried out from May, 2010 to October, 2010. Water content, soil texture, electric conductivity and water table depth for sediment, density, height, dry weight and flowering for P. australis were examined at several plots from the starting point (the coastal embankment) to the end point of the two populations. The result was as follows. Firstly, the water table increased along distance from the embankment at one line (N-line) but was similar at the other line (S-line) in a P. asustralis population. Water tables were higher out of than within a P. australis population at two populations. Secondary, in N-line, the height and dry weight of P. australis decreased along the distance from embankment but, in S-line, those were similar in its population. P. australis' growth was dependent on electric conductivity at lower layer (water table level) rather than upper one (the surface). Thirdly, density of P. australis changed during growing season and was similar in a population, except for the end point of patch. In summary, the growth and distribution of P. australis were dependent on salt content of tidal flat's sediment (water table level) and this was affected by fresh water of the inland.
