  • It is necessary to study on the prevention and the management of electrical facilities because the electrical fault took place at the dust occurrence area due to environmental pollution. In particular, the dust accumulates easily on insulation material which is exposed an external long time. Therefore, we measured surface leakage current and surface variation of insulation material due to the dust and salt-water. From the results, the surface of bakelite is bad effect for salt-water than other material. The surface leakage current increases by repeated salt-water pollution and the surface of material is carbonized with arc occurrence. Also, it is need to variation of surface coating and shape of material to repress a leakage current on electrical material.

  • A quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to monitor the corrosion process of an aluminum surface of a quartz crystal for marine sensor by sea water. A quartz crystal having 2000 $\AA$ of aluminum layer is installed in a specially designed cell and is in contact with sea water imitated electrolyte solution. While a constant potential is applied to the cell, the resonant frequency and resonant resistance are simultaneously measured using the quartz crystal analyzer. In addition, surface topographs are taken with an atomic force microscope(AFM) and the element analysis of the surface is conducted using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDX). The simultaneous measurement of resonant frequency and resonant resistance during the corrosion process explains the change of surface structure caused by the corrosion. The variation of resonant frequency addresses the amount surface metal dissolution. As a conclusion, it is found that a simple measurement using the quartz crystal analyzer can replace the complex monitoring employing large equipments in the investigation of a corrosion process of sensor surface.

  • This study was conducted to assess the validity of fecal coliforms to fecal streptococci ratio (FC/FS) for distinguishing the human from animal origin of fecal pollution in surface water. FC/FS ratio determined in effluent from municipal wastewater and human feces treatment plant (WWTP) and in downstream close to discharge of human feces was above 4 which indicates human origin. However FC/FS ratios determined seasonally in other water zones of the Nakdong River, even in the same sampling site, varied differently (above 4 or less than 0.7) due to different survival time of FC and FS and other environmental factors such as rainfall in watershed. Compared to other season, FC/FS ratios in winter were much lower regardless of the origin. It is concluded that the FC/FS ratio determined in surface water is not always valid for determining the origin of fecal pollution.

  • A grid-based KIneMatic wave soil-water EROsion and deposition Model (KIMEROM) that predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of sediment transport in a watershed was developed. This model uses ASCII-formatted map data supported from the regular gridded map of GRASS (U.S. Army CERL, 1993)-GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and generates the distributed results by ASCIIl-formatted map data. For hydrologic process, the kinematic wave equation and Darcy equation were used to simulate surface and subsurface flow, respectively (Kim, 1798; Kim et al., 1993). For soil erosion process, the physically-based soil erosion concept by Rose and Hairsine (1988) was used to simulate soil-water erosion and deposition. The model adopts sing1e overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and subsurface water depth, and sediment concentration at each grid element (or a given time increment. The model was tested to a 162.3 km$^2$ watershed located in the tideland reclaimed area of South Korea. After the hydrologic calibration for two storm events in 1999, the results of sediment transport were presented for the same storm events. The results of temporal variation and spatial distribution of overland flow and sediment areas are shown using GRASS.

  • The Durability of Concrete Structure is serverely degraded due to mainly carbonation, sulfate attack and chloride ion diffusion in concrete. The ultimate purpose of this study is to obtain how much the durability of Concrete Structure is improved according to the variation of physical properties in concrete or the frequency of surface coating on concrete. Where, variation of physical properties is a water-cement ratio or amount of air. The experiments are the chliride ion diffusion test, the lapid corrosion test, the lapid carbonation test, the test on resistance to freezing and thawing. Finally, this study shows that the effect by the surface coating method is better than the variation of physical properties in concrete.

  • Seasonal variation of phytoplankton was investigated with surface mixed layer ecosystem model in the East Sea. The model consisted of four compartments (phytoplankton, zooplankton, nutrient, detritus) forced by mixed layer depths, photosynthetically available radiation and nutrient concentrations. From model results we estimated entrainment rate $2.5-4.0\;m{\cdot}day^{-1}$ to reproduce the two annual blooms, and reproduced seasonal variation of phytoplankton at southern and northern regions by the difference of surface winter mixed layer depth (MLD) using the entrainment rate value $3.0\;m{\cdot}day^{-1}$. The spring blooms in the southern and northern regions closely related to deepening of a winter surface MLD. In the southern region where MLD was shallow and phytoplankton spring bloom occurs one month in advance to the northern region where MLD was deep. The amount of light increases within the MLD during the onset of stratification and water temperature increases faster in spring in the southern region than the northern region. Decrease of phytoplankton was mainly affected by zooplankton grazing in the southern region and by nutrient exhaustion in the northern region. The fall bloom in the two regions was caused by the nutrient availability and entrainment on the phytoplankton.

  • Harsh seawater environment is subdivided into marine atmosphere, splash zone, tidal zone, submerged zone and bottom of sea depending on the exposed part. Since corrosion rate depends on the conditions of the exposed parts, proper protection and maintenance for each parts are essential for long-term use of steel structures in seawater environment. For steel structures which were installed in Shiwha Lake, a special maintenance system is required to guarantee its long-term durability and safety. As the tidal power plant has recently been operated, the salinity has risen due to the rapid influx of seawater upstream into Sihwa Lake and the corrosion tendency of the structure is variable according to the water level fluctuation. In this study, corrosion properties of steel structures under water level fluctuation was evaluated by corrosion rate measurement, visual inspection and natural potential measurement and their durability and life management were discussed in view of the effect of variation in of seawater level fluctuations in Shihwa Lake.

  • The feasibility of water supply as in-stream flow for Mangwall stream was analyzed in terms of water quality and cultivation periphyton using two different types of water resources (e.g., surface water and bank filtration from Han River basin) and three different types of media (e.g., tile, concrete and pebble). The concentrations of organic and inorganic contaminants from the bank filtration were lower than those from surface water by 17.5 - 55.0%. Using water samples collected from Mangwall stream, surface water, and bank filtration, chlorophyll-a, phaeopigment, and growth rate of periphyton were investigated. During 30 day incubation for each water sample, it was observed that filamentous cyanobacteria, Oscillatoriaceae, accounted for 98%, and water velocity of 5 cm/s was optimum for the in situ filamentous cyanobacteria growth. Also, it was deducted for water velocity and chl-a to have an inverse correlation. Meanwhile, the greater the specific surface area of media, the higher the concentration of chl-a. From these results, both water velocity and specific surface area of media should be considered as an combined parameter to deter the growth of filamentous cyanobacteria.

  • Seasonal and interannual variations of the oceanic condition in the surface layer of the northwestern East Sea are described. The seasonal variation shows two types in the water circulation. In the first type the East Korean Warm Current (EUC) Water are dominant in the East Korean Bay in spring, while in summer the cold water region develops as the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) becomes strong. In the second type the cold water appears in the East Korean Bay from spring, but in summer the EKWC comes close to the coast, thus influencing the coastal cold water region. The characteristics of the interannual variation can be classified into 4 types according to the relative strength between the EKWC and the NKCC, and the paths of these currents. In each case various sizes of cyclonic cold eddies and/or anti-cyclonic warm eddies are formed frequently in the East Korean Bay.
