Application of Geostatistical Methods for the Analysis of Groundwater Contamination in Pusan (부산지역 지하수 오염현황 분석을 위한 지구통계 기법의 응용)

  • The geostatistical analyses for the chemical components of pH, TS, KMnO4 Demand, Cl, SO$_4$ and NO$_3$-N are carried out to understand the groundwater contamination in Pusan. The average values of each component are 7.2 for pH, 336.4mg/$\ell$ for TS, 2.3mg/$\ell$ for KMnO$_4$ Demand, 44.3mg/$\ell$ for Cl, 36.0mg/$\ell$ for SO$_4$, and 4.6mg/$\ell$ for NO$_3$-N. The ratios over the drinking standard of each component are 0.34% for pH, 2.27% for TS, 1.55% for KMnO$_4$ Demand, 1.59% for Cl, 0.57% for SO$_4$, and 3.7% for NO$_3$-N. The highest ratio of NO$_3$-N results from the municipal sewage and exhaust gas of vehicles. The isopleth maps of 6 chemical components show that the high values of groundwater contamination come from the inland of Pusan, and that some high values appear at the coastal area. The isopleth maps of Cl and SO$_4$ related with seawater intrusion also show that the high values appear only at the particular coastal area, not at the whole area. On the isopleth maps of Cl and SO$_4$, the anomalies of the concentration contours were compared with the directions of two large fault zones, the Ilkwang Fault and the Dongrae Fault. Apparently, they don't have the particular correlation. Therefore, it is concluded that the main source of groundwater contamination in Pusan is not the seawater, but the municipal sewage and other sources such as the exhaust gas of vehicles, the contaminated surface water, the waste water of factories, and the leachate of waste landfills.

Comparisons of Soil Characteristics between Campsites and Their Adjoining Forest Areas in the Eastern Area of Jirisan National Park (지리산국립공원 동부지역 야영장 조성지와 인접 산림지역의 토양 특성 비교)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate soil property between campsites located at Joongsanri, Daewonsa old, Daewonsa new, Baekmudong and their adjoining forest areas in the eastern area of Jirisan National Park. The survey results showed that there existed a significant difference(p<0.05) between the two areas in soil property, such as soil bulk density, soil hardness, soil pH, water infiltration and soil respiration rates. However, there was no difference in soil property by depth between surface soil($0{\sim}15cm$) and subsurface soil($15{\sim}30cm$) for the two areas(p>0.05). In case of soil bulk density, its values in campsites were significantly higher ($1.29{\sim}1.44g/cm^3$) than in forest areas($0.95g/cm^3$), while soil hardness was significantly lower(p<0.05) in forest areas($1.44kg/cm^2$) than in campsites($2.9{\sim}4.0kg/cm^2$). Soil pore space was significantly lower in campsites($45.7{\sim}51.4%$) than in forest areas(64.3%), and soil pH in forest areas indicated pH 5.46 and that of the campsites was distributed at the range from pH 6.49 to pH 6.38. In addition, water infiltration was significantly lower in campsites($0.79{\sim}2.06cc/sec$) than in forest areas(18.7cc/sec), while soil respiration rates were significantly higher in forest areas($0.58gCO_2/m^2/h$) than in campsites($0.13{\sim}0.34gCO_2/m^2/h$).

Advanced Treatment of Sewage and Wastewater Using an Integrated Membrane Separation by Porous Electrode-typed Electrolysis (분리막/다공 전극형 전기분해 조합공정을 이용한 하.폐수의 고도처리)

  • To treat nitrate and non-biodegradable organics effectively in sewage, industrial wastewater and livestock wastewater, the activated sludge process integrated by a membrane separation and a porous electrode- electrolysis was proposed and its efficiency was investigated. The proposed system was consisted of 3 processes; activated sludge, membrane filtration and electrolysis. In the study, the membrane filtration played a role in reducing the load of the electrolysis to operate the proposed process stably. The electrolysis consisted of a porous electrode to increase the efficiency due to the extension of the specific surface area. Additionally, redox reaction in the electrolysis was induced by decomposing influent water as current was applied. As a result, hydrogen free radicals and oxygen radicals as intermediates were produced and they acted as oxidants to play a role in decomposing non-degradable organics. It was environmentally-friendly process because intermediates produced by porous electrode were used to treat waste matters without supplying external reagent. Experimental data showed that the proposed process was more excellent than activated sludge process. SS removal efficiencies of the proposed process, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 100%, about 100% and about 90%, respectively. COD removal efficiencies of the proposed system, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 92%, about 84% and about 78%, respectively. T-N removal efficiencies of the proposed system, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 88%, about 67%, and about 58%, respectively. The SS data showed that SS was efficiently removed in the single of the membrane filtration. The COD/T-N data showed that COD/T-N of membrane hybrid process was treated by removing a little soluble organics and SS, and that COD/T-N of electrolysis hybrid process was treated by oxidize organics with high removal rate.

Analysis for Rainfall Infiltration Using Electrical Resistivity Monitoring Survey (강우 침투 특성 분석을 위한 전기비저항 모니터링 탐사)

  • During rainfall period, to identify the characteristics of the infiltration of moisture, electrical resistivity monitering survey was carried out to weathered zone. Four regions of geophysical exploration areas with different rock types, four regions were selected. An area consists of mafic granite and three areas are composed of sedimentary rocks (Sandstone, Shale, Unconsolidated Mudstone). Survey was conducted from June (rainy season) to November (dry season), and during the period the change in resistivity was observed. According to the result of monitoring exploration on Geumjeong and Jinju areas, for the estimation of the standard rainfall, it is necessary to estimate the effects of the antecedent rainfall during the rainy season based on the overall rainfall from June till October and also necessary to consider this for the estimation of the half period. Also, the vertical distribution of the low resistivity anomaly zone does not show that the infiltration of moisture does not occur uniformly from the surface of the ground to the lower ground but shows that it occurs along the relaxed gap of the crack or soil stratum of the weathering zone. In Pohang area, the type of moisture infiltration is different from that of the granite or sedimentary rock. Since, after the rainfall, the rate of infiltration to the lower ground is high and the period of cultivation to the lower bedrock aquifer is short, it has similar effect to that of the antecedent rainfall applied for the estimation of the standard rainfall being presently used. In Danyang, due to the degree of water content of the ground, the duration period of the low resistivity anomaly zone observed in the lower ground of the place where clastic sedimentary rock is distributed is similar to that in Pohang area. The degree of lateral water diffusion at the time of localized heavy rain is the same as that of the sedimentary rock in Jinju. According to the above analysis results, in Danyang area, the period when the antecedent rainfall has its influence is estimated as three weeks or so.

Physicochemical Properties of Ground Pork with Lotus Leaf Extract during Refrigerated Storage (연잎추출물 첨가가 분쇄돈육의 냉장저장 중 이화학적 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of lotus leaf extract on the physicochemical characteristics of ground pork stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Four types of ground pork were evaluated: ice water added (T0), 3% lotus leaf extract added (T1), 7% lotus leaf extract added (T2), and 10% lotus leaf extract added (T3). The pH was increased during storage, but decreased after 10 days of storage (p<0.05). The TBARS increased with a longer storage period (p<0.05), and those of T0, T1, T2 and T3 were 0.777, 0.244, 0.185, 0.182 mg MA/kg, respectively, after 10 days of storage. The VBN content of T0 and T1 increased with a longer storage period (p<0.05), but those of T2 and T3 were not significantly changed. In the case of surface color, the $L^*$ increased with a longer storage period, and that of T0 was the highest (p<0.05). The $a^*$ decreased with a longer storage period, and the $b^*$ was the highest after 1 day of storage (p<0.05). In the case of internal color, $L^*$ was not significantly changed, and $a^*$ was decreased with a longer storage period (p<0.05). The $b^*$ increased with a longer storage period (p<0.05). Water holding capacity increased with a longer storage period, and those of T2 and T3 were the highest (p<0.05). Cooking loss decreased with a longer storage period, and those of T0 and T1 were higher than those of T2 and T3 (p<0.05). Hardness and chewiness were not significantly different with a longer storage period, or among any samples.

Effect of washing methods on the quality of freshly cut sliced Deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata) during storage (세척방법에 따른 신선편이 슬라이스 더덕의 저장 중 품질 특성 변화)

  • There is increasing interest in freshly cut products, that is, foods produced without washing and cutting. In this study, the quality of freshly cut sliced Deodeok was compared with that of what based on its washing methods. In bubble washing, the Deodeok rises to the water surface apace and is broken into centimeter sizes. Microbubble washing calls for the production of a great number of 0.1 mm-sized bubbles in anions-bearing water and their passing through a trumpet-shaped hole at a high pressure. To compare the product deterioration rates of the specimens, they were stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. In the specimens washed with the control method and with hand washing, the deterioration rate was 80%; and in the specimens washed with bubble and microbubble washing, 20~30%. The L-value (an index of browning) was higher in the bubble and microbubble washing than in the control and the hand washing, which implies that browning was minimized during the storage. As for the viable cell and coliform group counts that were measured during the storage, the specimens washed with the control method showed the highest values. In contrast, the specimens washed with microbubble washing showed the lowest values. In the sensory test, the specimens washed with microbubble were highest in storage preference. In conclusion, the Deodeok that was stored after it was washed with microbubble washing was found to have had the best quality.

Enhanced antimicrobial effectiveness of Omija (Schizamdra chinesis Baillon) by ClO2 (chlorine dioxide) treatment (오미자 수확 후 이산화염소수를 이용한 표면 세척에 따른 미생물 저감 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate antimicrobial effectiveness of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Baillon) treated with $ClO_2$ (chlorine dioxide) concentration (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppm), washing time (30, 60 and 90 sec) and multiple proportion (x1, x2, x3 and x4). The seven groups were divided into control (Omija without washing water treatment), W-T (Omija treated by tap water ($20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) for 30 seconds), $ClO_2$-10 (Omija treated by 10 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-15 (Omija treated by 15 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-20 (Omija treated by 20 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-25 (Omija treated by 25 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-30 (Omija treated by 30 ppm $ClO_2$), and then they were detected number of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold. The rate of inactivation was found, for microorganisms of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold, to increase with a increase of $ClO_2$ treatment concentration and multiple proportion. No total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold in $ClO_2$-30 sample treated for 30 sec, $ClO_2$-15 treated for 60 sec and $ClO_2$-10 treated for 90 sec were detected, and in $ClO_2$-30 Omija with multiple proportion ${\times}1$ (Omija : 30 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:1 (w/w)), $ClO_2$-20 with ${\times}2$ (Omija : 20 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:2 (w/w)) and $ClO_2$-15 with ${\times}4$ (Omija : 15 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:4 (w/w)) respectively.

  • The bottom ash of municipal solid waste incineration generated during incineration of municipal solid waste in metropolitan area consists of ceramics, glasses, ferrous materials, combustible materials and food waste and so on. Although the ferrous material was separated by the magnetic separation before the incineration process, of which content accounts for about $3{\sim}11%$ in bottom ash. The formation of a $Fe_3O_4-Fe_2O_3$ double layer(similar to pure Fe) on the iron surface was found during air-annealing in the incinerator at $1000^{\circ}C$. A strong thermal shock, such as that takes place during water-cooling of bottom ash, leads to the breakdown of this oxidation layer, facilitating the degradation of ferrous metals and the formation of corrosion products and it existed as $Fe_2O_3,\;Fe_3O_4\;and\;FeS_2$. So, many problems could occur in the use of bottom ash as an aggregate substitutes in construction field. Therefore, in this study, the separation of ferrous materials from municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash was investigated. In the result, the ferrous product(such as $Fe_2O_3,\;Fe_3O_4,\;FeS_2$ and iron) by magnetic separator at 3800 gauss per total bottom ash(w/w.%) accounted for about 18.7%, and 87.7% of the ferrous product was in the size over 1.18 mm. Also the iron per total bottom ash accounted for about 3.8% and the majority of it was in the size over 1.18 mm.

VARIETAL DIFFERENCES IN DISTRIBUTION AND PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RICEROOT (수도근(水稻根)의 분포(分布) 및 생리적(生理的) 특성(特性)에 관(關)한 품종간차이(品種間差異))

  • Varietal difference in root distribution and other root characteristics were investigated under fold and water culture condition. The results were as follows: 1. IR667 showed funnel type of root distribution in soil profit while Jinheung had barrel type, and each type appearance was more distinguishable with fertilizer application. 2. Root weight per tiller was smaller in IR667 than in Jinheung and IR667 had more root in 0 to 5cm of soil depth but Jinheung had more in 5 to l0cm depth. 3. Horizontal distribution of root was dencer near to stem base without fertilizer than with fertilizer in both IR667 and Jinheung indicating structural construction for intensive nutrient uptake. Between varieties this 'dence to stem base' trend accompaning 'dence to wide spacing side' was greater in IR667 without fertilizer and these were quite true with fertilizer in Jinheung. 4. The decreasing rates of root and ear weight by fertilizer application were greater in IR667 than in Jinheung. This and other characteristics indicated that the root of IR667 is likely to be panicle-number type comparing with Jinheung. 5. The root of IR667 had lower oxidizing power of ${\alpha}-naphthylamine$ than that of Jinheung indicating weaker resistance to reductive soil but cation exchange capacity of water-cultured root was higher in IR667 suggesting stronger nutrient uptake. 6. The content of phosphorus and especially potassium in root were higher with fertilizer but lower without fertilizer in IR667 than in Jinheung indicating that IR667 is more sensitive to root environment. 7. The contents of N, K and CEC were increasing toward root tip while P content was decreasing. The root from surface soil had higher N and K content than that from subsoil. The contents of N,P,K, and CEC of root at harvesting stage were about 1.0%, 0.1%, 0.5% and 15me/100g at dry weight base, respectively.

Chemical Composition Characteristics of Dustfall in Nakdong River Area (낙동강 하류역 강하먼지의 화학적 조성 특성)

  • Dustfall samples were collected by the modified American dust jar (bulk type) at 5 sampling sites in the Nakdong river area from lune 2002 to May 2003. Nineteen chemical species (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, V, Zn, $Cl^-$, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, and $NH_4^+$) were analyzed via the combination of ICP/AES, AAS, IC and UV. The purposes of this study were to qualitatively evaluate the chemical composition of dustfalls by examining their regional and seasonal distribution patterns. Computation of the enrichment factor showed that well-defined anthropogenic sources, particularly in Pb were found in the order Gamjeondong (industrial area), Wondong, Silla University, Samrangiin and Mulgum. The seasonal mean of soil contribution showed its highest value (16.3%) during the winter with an annual mean of 11.2%. The concentration ratio of [$SO_4^{2-}/NO_3^-$] was found to be highest (5.12) during the winter, while the lowest ratio value (3.30) was seen during the all. fall, Also regional equivalent ratios of [$SO_4^{2-}/NO_3^-$] were found in the order: Silla University (6.78), Gamjeondong (4.98), Mulgum (3.95), Wondong (3.85), and Samrangjin (2.87). Seasonal distribution of water soluble components for total dustfall were found in the order: spring (71.6%), summer (61.2%), fall (49.2%) and winter (48.6%) with a mean ratio of 57.6%. Regional contribution of sea salts of water soluble ions were found in the order: Silla university (34.5%), Gamjeondong (28.3%), Wondong (17.3%), Samrangiin (17.2%) and Mulgum (13.8%), the total mean contribution rate was 22.1%. As for the chemical composition of dustftll on the lower Nakdong river, there is a decreased influence of sea salt and artificial anthropogenic sources and increased influence of soil particle inland. Also, the total amount of deposition on the lower Nakdong river has decreased, with the river's surface serving as a confounding factor in resuspending dusts.
