  • The selective plugging strategy of Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) involves the use of microbes that grow and produce exopolymeric substances, which block the high permeability zones of an oil reservoir, thus allowing the water to flow through the low permeability zones leading to increase in oil recovery. Bacillus licheniformis TT33, a hot water spring isolate, is facultatively anaerobic, halotolerant, and thermotolerant. It produces EPS as well as biosurfactant and has a biofilm-forming ability. The viscosity of its cell-free supernatant is $120\;mPa{\cdot}s$ at $28^{\circ}C$. Its purified EPS contained 26% carbohydrate and 3% protein. Its biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 to 34 mN/m. This strain gave $27.7{\pm}3.5%$ oil recovery in a sand pack column. Environmental scanning electron microscopy analysis showed bacterial growth and biofilm formation in the sand pack. Biochemical tests and Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis confirmed that the oil recovery obtained in the sand pack column was due to Bacillus licheniformis TT33.

  • The objectives of this study are to measure the ball recovery rate of cleaning apparatus for plate heat exchanger. Ceramic ball is used for plate heat exchanger cleaning. The main components of cleaning apparatus are comprised of ball collector, ball trap, ejector, pump and plate heat exchanger. The ball recovery rate are obtained with change in recovery time and velocity of water. The results show that the ball recovery rate is slightly increased with increase in the recovery time and the velocity of water over 0.4 m/s in the straight flow. In the case of reverse flow, the ball recovery rate more increased than straight flow. The maximum ball recovery rate of the straight flow and reverse flow reach 83.97% and 86.61%, respectively, when the velocity and cleaning time are 0.5 m/s and 15min.

  • The ocean is now increasingly suffering from pollution mainly caused by oil spill accidents roil increasing marine transportation. It cause not only the deterioration of ocean resources but also critical damage on the ocean ecosystem. Present study is an experimental one for the development of the oil skimmer which can collect spilled-oil actively and effectively from the sea surface. As an effort of achieving it, a new type of water wheel attached nil skimmer was devised, based upon the concept of orifice. The shapes of the water wheel, blades and oil storing tank are found to be very important factors on the oil skimming performance through systematic experimental analysis. Real oil recovery test was also carried out in square tank using the oil skimmer with their optimal shapes. Quite satisfactory result are obtained from the test which showed 99% and 98% recovery rates for light oil and heavy oil in still water condition, respectively.

  • Recently, separation membranes have been applied to fields such as water supply, sewage treatment, gray water reuse, and air pollution control. Chemical cleaning technology is attracting attention among the methods of reusing these expensive separation membranes. It was found that the separation membrane could be regenerated using chemical cleaning. Specifically, it was found that the use time of the separation membranes regenerated by chemical cleaning was sustainable for more than 1,700 hours. Additionally, it was found that the flux recovery ratio after chemical cleaning was maintained at least 60%. In addition, the flux recovery ratio of HYDREX 4710, an organic membrane cleaner, and 4703, an inorganic membrane cleaner, was 76% and 62%, respectively, showing the highest flux recovery ratio among the chemicals used. Considering that the target raw water of this study is biological secondary treatment water, it was suggested that chemical cleaning could be actively used to regenerate separation membranes in future water treatment.

  • Various recovery methods were investigated to maximize hemicellulose recovery from lignocellulosic material hydrolyzed by pure water. The pretreatment conditions of water hydrolysis were $170\~180^{\circ}C$ and 1 hour of reaction time. The percentage of hemicellulose solubilized increased as the temperature increased from 170 to $180^{\circ}C$. However, significant decomposition of sugar was observed at temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. From the results of water hydrolysis, the total amount of glucan in solid residue and liquid hydrolyzate was close to the total glucan in the original biomass. For hemicellulose, however, there was a significant difference between both contents. To prove this difference, various recovery methods were proposed. From the total sugar accountability (sugar in liquid + sugar in solid), it was confirmed that hemicellulose recovery in the hydrolyzate was increased if the product including both hydrolyzate and solid residue was physically stimulated by such as heating and ultrasound irradiation. This indicated that, in commercial scale processes that much bigger substrate sizes are used and a sufficient amount of leaching solvent can not be used after pretreatment, a significant amount of oligomers could be trapped in the solid matrix.

  • Numerical analyses were performed using a one-dimensional Euler equation and Godunov Harten-Lax-Van Leer(HLL) Riemann solver in order to study the deceleration characteristics of a 155 mm projectile in a soft recovery system. The soft recovery system consisting of a series of pressure tubes is a system that decelerates the test projectile fired at supersonic speed using a high-pressure gas and filled water inside. Therefore, depending on the gas pressure and the amount of water filling, the deceleration and the exit velocity of the test projectile inside the pressure tube are determined. In this paper, the deceleration characteristics of the test projectile were analyzed according to the gas pressure and water mass filled.

  • Evaporative cooling is a very effective way for exhaust heat recovery that uses both latent heat and sensible heat. This study investigated the performance of a heat recovery system using evaporative cooling. The experimental apparatus comprised a plastic heat exchanger, a water spray nozzle, an air blowing fan, a water circulation pump, and measuring sensors for the temperature, humidity, and flow rate. The effectiveness of the sensible heat recovery without evaporation was measured and compared with that of the total heat recovery with evaporation. The effectiveness of the sensible and total heat recoveries decreased as the air flow rate increased, and a much higher effectiveness was obtained with the counterflow arrangement in both cases. For total heat recovery, the effectiveness increased with the water flow rate, and the parallel flow arrangement was found to be more sensitive to the water flow rate than the counterflow arrangement.

  • The performance of heat exchanger using oscillating heat pipe (OHP) for low temperature waste heat recovery was evaluated. OHP used in this study was made from low finned copper tubes connected by many turns to become the closed loop of serpentine structure. The OHP heat exchanger was formed into shell and tube type. R-22 and R-141b were used as the working fluids of OHP with a fill ratio of 40 vol.%. Water was used as the working fluid of shell side. As the experimental parameters, the inlet temperature difference between heating and cooling water and the mass velocity of water were changed. The mass velocity of water was changed from 30 kg/$m^2$s to 92 kg/$m^2$s. The experimental results showed that the heat recovery rate linearly increased as the mass velocity and the inlet temperature difference of water increased. Finally, the performance of OHP heat exchanger was evaluated by $\varepsilon$-NTU method. It was found that the effectiveness would be 80% if NTU were about 1.5.

  • Cryptosporidium can cause gastrointestinal diseases worldwide, consequently posing public health problems and economic burden. Effective techniques for detecting contaminated oocysts in water are important to prevent and control the contamination. Immunomagnetic separation (IMS) method has been widely employed recently due to its efficiency, but, it is costly. Sucrose floatation technique is generally used for separating organisms by using their different specific gravity. It is effective and cheap but time consuming as well as requiring highly skilled personnel. Water turbidity and parasite load in water sample are additional factors affecting to the recovery rate of those 2 methods. We compared the efficiency of IMS and sucrose floatation methods to recover the spiked Cryptosporidium oocysts in various turbidity water samples. Cryptosporidium oocysts concentration at 1, $10^1$, $10^2$, and $10^3$ per $10{\mu}l$ were spiked into 3 sets of 10 ml-water turbidity (5, 50, and 500 NTU). The recovery rate of the 2 methods was not different. Oocyst load at the concentration < $10^2$ per 10 ml yielded unreliable results. Water turbidity at 500 NTU decreased the recovery rate of both techniques. The combination of sucrose floatation and immunofluorescense assay techniques (SF-FA) showed higher recovery rate than IMS and immunofluorescense assay (IMS-FA). We used this SF-FA to detect Cryptosporidium and Giardia from the river water samples and found 9 and 19 out of 30 (30% and 63.3%) positive, respectively. Our results favored sucrose floatation technique enhanced with immunofluorescense assay for detecting contaminated protozoa in water samples in general laboratories and in the real practical setting.
