Economical Evaluation Based on Method of Coagulation with GAC Adsorber Operation (활성탄 흡착지의 운영시 응집 방법에 따른 경제성 평가)

  • Applying enhanced coagulation is not uncommon not only to improve water quality but also to obtain economical advantages in water treatment. In this study, the economical evaluation was investigated with considering dosage of coagulant, produced sludges and usage of activated carbon with two different water sources. To simulate the granular activated carbon(GAC) adsorber mini-column test was adapted. Even if there were some variation according to the source waters, the life time of GAC was extended 60 to 110days with adding 2.5 to 3 times of coagulant in enhanced coagulation. With assumption of changing GAC adsorber at 50% of breakthrough the total treatment cost can be reduced to range from 25% to 44% with adapting the enhanced coagulation. The obtained value can not be generalized because the value can be varied by water quality and cost of the GAC or coagulant. However, the evaluation can be basis starting point to find optimum operation methods for the drinking water treatment which has plan to adapt GAC adsorber.

Water Quality Characteristics of Busan Metropolitan Streams (부산광역시 일부하천의 수질특성)

  • This study is carried out to investigate the water quality changes in Busan Metropolitan streams, The results are as follows. The level of organic contaminants($BOD_{5}$ and $COD_{Mn}$) is found to be low and does not show seasonal variation in domestic waste water streams. But, the level of organic contaminants in industrial waste water streams is relatively high and seems to be seasonally variable, which is affected by other factors. The nutrient materials, such as nitrogen(as T-N, about 20mg/L) and phosphorus(as T-P about 2.0mg/L), are abundant than Nak Dong River and the general trends of contaminants level are similar to those of organic contaminants. The chronic water qualities, including organic, nutrient contaminants levels, show that the loading rates in 1998 are smaller than the past(1983, 1992). And this trend is more evident in industrial waste water streams than domestic waste water streams.

Use of the Extended Kalman Filter for the Real-Time Quality Improvement of Runoff Data: 1. Algorithm Construction and Application to One Station (확장 칼만 필터를 이용한 유량자료의 실시간 품질향상: 1. 알고리즘 구축 및 단일지점에의 적용)

  • This study applied the extended Kalman Filter, a data assimilation method, for the real-time quality improvement of runoff measurements. The state-space model of the extended Kalman Filter was composed of a rainfall-runoff model and the runoff measurement. This study divided the purpose of quality improvement of runoff measurements into two; one is to suppress the abnormally high variation of dam inflow data, and the other to amend the missing or erroneous measurements. For each case, a proper model of extended Kalman Filter was proposed, and the main difference between two models is whether only the variation is considered or both the bias and variation are considered in the estimation of covariance function. This study was applied to the Chungju Dam Basin to confirm the proposed models were effectively worked to improve the quality of both the dam inflow data and the runoff measurements with some missing and erroneous part.

Water Quality Variation Dynamics between Artificial Reservoir and the Effected Downstream Watershed: the Case Study (인공댐과 그 영향을 받는 하류하천의 수질변동 역동성 : 사례 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity between the dam site (Daecheong Reservoir, S1) and the downstream (S2$\sim$S4) using water quality dataset (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea) during 2000$\sim$2007. Water quality, based on eight physical and chemical parameters, varied largely depending on the years, sampling sites, and the discharge volume. Conductivity and nutrients (TN and TP) showed a decreasing trend in the downstream (S4) rather than the dam site during the monsoon. Spatial variation increased toward downstream (S4) from Daecheong Reservoir (S1). Also, BOD and COD increased toward downstream. Because of input of nutrient and pollutant nearby S1, lentic ecosystem in monsoon, BOD and COD were slightly increased. whereas relatively decreased in S4, lotic ecosystem in monsoon, by dilution effect of nutrient and pollutant by discharge from upper dam, S1. Spatial variation of SS increased toward downstream (S4) by the side of Daecheong Reservoir (S1). Based on the dataset, efficient water quality management in the point source tributary streams is required for better water quality of downstream. Monthly characteristics of DO showed the lowest value in the monsoon that tend to increase water temperature. DO was lowest in October at S1 because turbid water, input to the Daecheong Reservoir in the monsoon affect to the postmonsoon period. In contrast, water temperature increased toward summer monsoon, in spite of some differences showed between S1 and S4 environment. Overall, the characteristics of water quality in downstream region have close correlation with discharge amount of Daecheong Reservoir. Thus, those characteristics can explain that discharge control of upper dam mainly affect to the water quality variation in downstream reach.

Oceanographic Environment Characteristics in Waters Adjacent to Fish Farm on Land (육상 양식장 인접해역의 해양학적 환경특성)

  • Field observations for research of oceanographic characteristics in waters adjacent to fish farm on land and water quality at area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm are carried out in coastal waters of Pyoson located in the southeastern region of Jeju Island in March, May, August and November of 2000. Semidiurnal tides to the northeast and southwest dominate. The mean velocities of current around neap tides and spring tides are 8.52cmㆍs$^{-1}$, 28.63cmㆍs$^{-1}$, respectively. The difference of temperature between area where water is supplied to fish farm and area where water is discharged from fish farm is about 0.6$^{\circ}C$. Seasonal variation range for temperature and salinity is 13.5$^{\circ}C$ and 3.5psu, individually. Concentrations of nitrate(NO$_3$$^{-}$), phosphate(PO$_4$$^{3-}$ ), silicate(SiO$_2$) and COD(chemical oxygen demand) are high in autumn. Particularly, concentrations of nitrate and COD in winter and spring at station where water is supplied to fish farm are higher than these at station where water is dischared from fish farm. However, concentration of phosphate and silicate at station where is supplied to fish farm in spring, summer and autumn is higher than that at station where water is dischared from fish farm. Water quality in the study area is grade 1 and this level is kept up in the whole year.

The Variation of Water Quality due to Sulice Gate Operation in Shiwha Lake (시화호의 배수갑문 운용에 따른 수질변화)

  • To evaluate the change for water quality after the water gate operation in Shiwha lake, in situ survey were conducted on september in 2000 and January, march, jane in 2001. Chemical characteristics and eutrophication level was estimated from the survey data. The water quality of the Shihwa lake was greatly affected by pollutant load from rainfall, and formation of stratification in summer and winter was increased to effect on nutrient release from sediment. Especially, high concentration of chlorophyll-a was occurred in autumn, due to increased nutrient, high water temperature and low salinity after rainfall runoff. The mean concentration of DIN, DIP were 0.346mg/L, 0.0217mg/L in surface water and 0.826mg/L, 0.0415mg/L in bottom water, respectively, which were over III grade of seawater standard. Also high percentage of ammonia nitrogen to DIN in bottom water for autumn and winter was affected by released nutrient from sediment. Correlation analysis of chlorophyll-a versus TSS was shown that organic matter was affected by autochthonous organic matter stem from the algae, these factor showed reverse correlation about salinity. Closely correlations among to the water quality constituent in continuity survey was appeared. The results of eutrophication index estimation showed the high potentiality of red tide occurrence in Shiwha lake, particularity in summer or fall. Overall water quality was greatly improve to compared with measuring data during 1997~1998 at the beginning water gate operation, which reported by KORDI. Therefore, to improve of water quality in Shiwha lake, we need to establish of management plan about nutrient release from sediment, rainfall runoff, maximum of seawater exchange.

A Stochastic Analysis of the Water Quality on the Basin of Soyang River with Discharge Variation (유량변동에 따른 소양강유역 수질의 통계학적 해석)

  • This research was conducted with the aim of efficiently managing large scale of rivers such like Songyang-river through predicting water quality change with analyzing the characteristics of the flowing in nutrients and pollutants. The main result will be used as basic data for effectively operating reservoirs through controling water quality and quantity. The relationship between quantity of flow and water quality was analyzed and pollution loading into the basin was estimated. Three areas of Soyang-river upstream and one area of Suip-cheon in Yanggu-gun were selected as research sites. Flow and water quality were measured simultaneously. The relation between quantity of discharge and pollution concentration and between quantity of discharge and pollution loading were analyzed by statistical method, respectively. We provided a rating curve through measuring quantity of discharge(collecting quantity of discharge) and pollutograph and pollution loading curve through water quality data. Also, we analyzed the correlation between quantity of discharge per unit area and pollution loading per unit area in each basin. As resurt of this research, Buk-cheon spot revealed an excellent first grade water quality for the items including $BOD_5$, DO, and SS. The correlation coefficient between Buk-cheon spot's quantity of discharge and pollution loading was 0.896~0.996, showing the validity of analysis applying correlation curve formula of quantity of discharge and pollution loading in the same spot. Also, pollution loading per unit area of the items including $BOD_5$, COD, DO, SS, T-N, T-P increased as the area of basins get increased following the sequence of Buk-cheon, Suip-cheon, Naelin-cheon spots.

Assessment of the Water Quality of Jungnang Stream by Flow Conditions Using Load Duration Curve (부하지속곡선을 이용한 중랑천의 유량 조건별 수질특성 평가)

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to suggest a method through which load duration curve was used to assess the achievement of water quality targets in accordance with the criteria for pollutant load depending on flow rate variation. Methods: The stage-discharge curve and flow duration curve of Jungnang Stream were deduced. Using water quality targets and measurement of the stream, the flow duration curve was also drawn. Based on these, the feasibility of achievement of water quality targets in respect to flow rate was assessed. Results: In terms of the load duration curve of the stream, it was observed that excess of criteria for concentrations of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and SS frequently occurred. On the other hand, when the flow rate was low, the concentrations of T-N and T-P exceeded the criteria. Conclusions: Through the load duration curve, the overall water quality of Jungnang Stream was understood. When the flow rate is high, management of point source of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and SS is needed to achieve water quality targets for Jungnang Stream. On the other hand, when the flow rate is low, the management of non-point source T-N and T-P is necessary to attain the water quality goal.

Comparative Analysis on the Outlier Data of Each Parameter in Automatic Water Quality Monitoring Networks (수질자동측정망 자료의 항목별 이상치 비교 분석)

  • Along the 4 major rivers in korea, there are automatic water quality monitoring (AWQM) stations to immediately respond to any pollution incident. Real-time data (temperature, DO, pH, EC and TOC) collected at each station were statistically treated to exclude outliers and keep valid data using Dixon's test and Discordance test. These applied methods were compared in terms of the number of the outliers sorted out. There was no significant difference between these methods. On the other hand, more outliers were sorted out from EC and TOC data, comparing with other water quality items. EC data did not show partly any variation for a long time at H station. If measured signal does not exceed ${\pm}0.001mS/cm$ from the sectional mean, the signal should be treated as normal data. Therefore, another routine was added to the data screening system, some data which were removed as outlier were restored.
