  • This study evaluated the removal efficiencies of methylene blue (MB) and humic acids (HA) using a rice husk (RH) biochar and powdered activated carbon (PAC). The pseudo-second-order model better presented the adsorption of MB and HA onto a RH biochar than the pseudo-first-order model. Furthermore, better description of the adsorption behavior of MB and HA by the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 of the RH biochar: MB = 0.986 and HA = 0.984; R2 of PAC: MB = 0.997 and HA = 0.989) than the Freundlich isotherm model (R2 of the RH biochar: MB = 0.955 and HA = 0.965; R2 of PAC: MB = 0.982 and HA = 0.973) supports the assumption that monolayer adsorption played key roles in the removal of MB and HA using the RH biochar and PAC. Batch experiments were performed on the effects of dosage, temperature, and pH. For all experiments, PAC showed higher efficiencies than RH biochar and MB adsorption efficiencies were higher than those of HA. Adsorption efficiencies increased with increasing amounts of adsorbents and temperature. As the pH increased, adsorption efficiencies of MB were increased while adsorption efficiencies of HA were decreased.

  • The effects of drying methods on the browning and moisture sorption characteristics of Rubus coreanus were studied. Fruits were steamed for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$, dried by sun drying, infrared drying, or freeze drying, and powdered to a size of 20 mesh. Color values were measured and equilibrium moisture contents (EMC) were determined at $20^{\circ}C$, over a range of water activity ($a_w$) from 0.11 to 0.90. The browning indices $L^*$ and $a^*$ values were higher and lower, respectively, in freeze-dried Rubus coreanus compared with other samples. The $b^*$ value was greatest in freeze-dried Rubus coreanus. EMC tended to increase with increasing $a_w$ values, and a particularly sharp increment was observed above 0.75 $a_w$. The EMC of freeze-dried Rubus coreanus was significantly higher compared with the EMC of sun-dried and infrared-dried fruit at constant aw. The moisture sorption isotherms showed a typical sigmoid shape, and the Halsey, Kuhn, and Oswin models were the best fits for the sun-dried, infrared-dried, and freeze-dried powder isotherms, respectively. With respect to monolayer moisture content, the Guggenheim-Anderson-Boer (GAB) equation showed that the various drying methods yielded very different results, with monolayer moisture contents of 0.005 g $H_2O/g$ dry solid in infrared-dried and 0.019 g $H_2O/g$ dry solid in sun- and freeze-dried powders, respectively. These results indicate that the drying method affects the browning and moisture sorption characteristics of Rubus coreanus.

  • Increase in water vapor barrier properties of sodium alginate films was studied by preparing composite films with fatty acids, i.e., lauric, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids, and by treatment with 3% $CaCl_{2}$ solution for 3 min. Film thickness, surface color, microstructure, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and sorption isotherm of films were investigated. Microstructure of films observed with SEM was changed by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. TS decreased 25-70% depending on fatty acid used, and increased 1.5- to 2-fold by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment. E decreased by both fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. Except oleic acid, WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) by forming composite films with fatty acids, particularly with stearic acid, WVP decreased more than two-fold. WS also decreased by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. In stearic acid, WS decreased about 30-fold by combined treatment of fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$. Sorption isotherm showed typical biphasic pattern with deliquescent point of 0.75. Results of isotherms and BET monolayer moisture content indicated hydrophilicity of film decreased by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment.

  • Collapsed perflurostearic acid (PFS) films were prepared on the different pH and the various metal ion ($Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $La^{3+}$) containing subphase using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) trough. The degree of ionization of collapsed PFS film formed from floating monolayer has been determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The intensity of C = O of -COOH peaks of collapsed PFS decreased with increasing pH of subphase. The order of ionization of collapsed PFS on the subphase of the same pH was $La^{3+}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$. The degree of ionization of collapsed PFS on the Deionized (D.I.) water subphase is above 50% even at subpahse pH 3, which is much higher degree of ionization than that of stearic acid.

  • Since Anton van Leeuwenhoek first observed a surface-associated multicellular structure of bacterial cells in the 17th century, it has been shown to exhibit an ability to form a biofilm by numerous bacterial species. The biofilm formation is composed of distinct developmental stages, which include an attachment/adhesion of a single cell, a proliferation toward monolayered coverage, a propagation to aggregated microcolony, a maturation to 3-dimensional structure, and subsequently a local degradation. Investigation to identify the essential factors for bacterial biofilm formation has been performed via classical genetic approaches as well as recently developed technologies. The initial stage requires bacterial motility provided by a flagellum, and outermembrane components for surface signal interaction. Type IV-pilus and autoaggregation factors, e.g., type I-fimbriae or Ag43, are necessary to reach the stages of monolayer and micro colony. The mature biofilm is equipped with extracellular polymeric matrix and internal water-filled channels. This complex architecture can be achieved by differential expressions of several hundred genes, among which the most studied are the genes encoding exopolysaccharide biosyntheses and quorum-sensing regulatory components. The status of our knowledge for the biofilms found in humans and natural ecosystems is discussed in this minireview.

  • Cryopreservation by vitrification of Hanwoo blastocysts derived from nuclear transfer with Hanwoo adult ear cell was compared with that of in vitro fertilized blastocysts. For vitrification, day 7 or day 8 blastocysts were serially exposed in glycerol (G) or/and ethylene glycol (EG) mixtures (10% G for 5 min, 10% G plus 20% EG for 5 min, and 25% G plus 25% EG for 30 sec) which was diluted in 10% FBS added D-PBS. Thawing of straw was carried out in air for 10 sec and then in water bath of $25^{\circ}C$ for 20 sec. The contents of the straw (0.2 ml) was expelled into a culture dish contained with 0.5M sucrose and 10% FBS(S-DPBS) by cutting the cotton plug and then the recovered embryos were put into fresh 0.25M and 0.125M S-DPBS for 30 sec, respectively, The embryos were transferred into D-PBS with 10% FBS for 5 min. and were cultured in a 10u1 droplet of co-culture environment (cumulus cell monolayer + 10% added CRl medium) for 24 h. In the result, survival rates were 88.9% and 85.4% for nuclear transfer embryos and in vitro fertilized embryos, respectively. After transfer of vitrified-thawed blastocysts produced from nuclear transfer, 4 of 5 total recipients did not return to the subsequent estrus cycle at 30 days. It is concluded that the Hanwoo blastocysts derived from nuclear transfer can be successfully cryopreserved using simple and efficient vitrification method.

  • Maxwell displacement current (MDC) measurement has been employed to study the dielectric property of Langmuir-films. MDC flowing across monolayers is analyzed using a rod-like molecular model. A method for determining the dielectric relaxation time ${\tau}$ of floating 'monolayers on the water surface is presented. MDC floing across monolayers is analyzed using a rod-like molecular model. It is revealed that the dielectric relaxation time ${\tau}$ of monolayers in the isotropic polar orientational phase is determined using a liner relationship between the monolayer compression speed a and the molecular area Am. Compression speed a was about 30,40,50mm/min. LB layers of Arachidic acid deposited by LB method were deposited onto slide glass as Y-type film. The physicochemical properties of the LB films were examined by UV absorption spectrum, SEM and AFM. The structure of manufactured device is Au/Arachidic acid/Al, the number of accumulated layers are 3~9. Also, we then examined of the MIM device by means of I-V characteristic of the device is measured from -3 to +3[V]. The insulation property of a thin film is better as the distance between electrodes is larger.

  • Thermal and photochemistry of methyl iodide ($CH_3I)\;adsorbed\;on\;D_2O$ ice film on Cu(111) at 100 K were studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies. On the basis of TPD, multilayer and monolayer $CH_3I$ molecules desorb from $D_2O$ ice layer at 120 and 130 K, respectively. Photo-irradiation at 100 K exhibits dramatic changes in the TPD and I $3d_{5/2}\;XPS\;of\;CH_3I$ on ice film, due to a dramatic dissociation of $CH_3I$. The dissociation is likely activated by solvated electrons transferred from the metal substrate during photo-irradiation. No other photo-initiated reaction products were found within our instrumental detection limit. During photo-irradiation, the $CH_3I$, $CH_3$ and I could be trapped (or solvated) in ice film by rearrangement (and self-diffusion) of water molecules. A newly appeared parent molecular desorption peak at 145 K is attributed to trapped $CH_3I$. In addition, the $CH_3$ and I may diffuse through ice and chemisorb on Cu(111), indicated by TPD and I $d_{5/2}$ XPS taken with photo-irradiation time, respectively. No molecular ejection was found during photo-irradiation at 100 K. The work functions for $CH_3I/Cu(111),\;D_2O/Cu(111)\;and\;CH_3I/D_2$O/Cu(111) were all measured to be about 3.9 eV, 1.0 eV downward shift from that of clean Cu(111).

  • N,N'-bis(ethyldihydrogen phosphate)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene bis(dicarboximide) (EPNI) and N,N'-bis(ethyldihydrogen phosphate)-3,4,9,10-perylene bis(dicarboximide) (EPPI) and their zirconium bisphosphate multilayers (Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI), that had been briefly reported by us, were further investigated in terms of their electrochemical properties. EPNI in aqueous solution showed typical two reversible reductions at ITO electrode but the reductions were strongly dependent on solution pH while EPPI showed only an irreversible reduction. The single and mixed multilayers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI were well constructed on ITO electrode by the alternate adsorptions of zirconium ion and the bisimides. While Zr-EPNI multilayer on ITO electrode showed single broad reversible reduction with $E_{1/2}=-0.68V$, Zr-EPPI gave two separated reductions at $E_{1/2}=-0.54$ and -0.81 V vs SCE, quite differently from the solution properties. The average layer densities of the multilayers were estimated as $1.5{\times}10^{-10}$ and $2.3{\times}10^{-10}mol/cm^2$ for Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI, respectively. Both the monolayers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI could not completely block the electron transfer between $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ in solution and ITO electrode but 3-5 layers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI could block it completely and mediated the one-way electron transfer at the potential shifted to their reduction potentials. When the monolayer of zirconium 1,10-decanediylbisphosphonate (Zr-DBP) was used as a sublayer of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI layers, the mediated electron transfer became prominent without any direct electron transfer.

  • This study was attemtped to improve the conventional processing method and to establish the basic data for evaluating the product suitabilities of dried loach. The semidressed raw material were salted in 15% NaCl solution for 15 minutes and dried to contain about 44% of water, and then heated about 10 minutes at $80^{\circ}C$ controlled by microwave (2,450 MHz). The moisture content of monolayer value for the product showed 5.34% and its water activity was 0.28. The optimum relative humidity for the storage was recognized to be from 32% to 44%. The average shelf life around the year of the Nylon-PVC-PE $(40\;{\mu})$ packed product in domestic circulation market was estimated as 207.4 days. In comparison with raw material, the contents of the major amino acids, glutamic acid, alanine and valine in the product were shown to be slightly increased, while the level of lysine, aspartic acid and methionine were slightly decreased. The contents of saturated fatty acids and oleic acid were shown to be slightly increased, while the other fatty acids tended to be slightly decreased.
