  • The steel impeller placed in a water pump has been studied with the aim to understand corrosion phenomena on the surface responsible for reducing the pumping efficiency of water inside cooling system. This preliminary experiment includes a period (around 1 month) observation with a powered microscope and weight measurements. The experiments are carried out at different conditions of water and mixtures of water and coolants, based on the water contents of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% water (pure tap water). From the visual results of microscopy, most of the steel surface is fitted and clear rusty or corrosion phenomena are noticeable as time goes. In addition, the weight loss of the sample specimen submerged in the water is linearly increased, whereas those in the mixtures of water initially gain weight and become almost constant.

  • Many protection methods such as surface coating, electric protection, or other methods have been applied to the numerous steel structures widely used in continental and marine areas to control their corrosion, which is done from an economic point of view. Most of these steel structures are primarily protected by coating methods. However, some steel piles under seawater are protected by the electric protection method, that is, either using an impressed current or a sacrificial anode method. Furthermore, environmental contamination may cause a severely corrosive environment, which, in turn, causes the accelerated corrosion of steel structures. Subsequently, coated steel structures could deteriorate more rapidly than the designed lifetime because of the acid rain caused by air pollution, etc. Therefore, a coating of marine paint exposed to seawater, that is, underwater hardening painting, is increasingly required to be fast drying as well as highly corrosion resistant. In this study, five types of underwater hardening paints were prepared with different resin series and additives. Their corrosion and water resistances were investigated using electrochemical methods such as corrosion potential, polarization curves, impedance and cyclic voltammogram measurements, etc. Even though it is generally accepted that the corrosion resistance of bare steel tends to increase with a shift of the corrosion potential in the noble direction, the corrosion resistance of a sample with a coating exhibited a relatively better tendency when it had a lower corrosion potential in this study. The corrosion current density was also decreased with a decrease in the diffusion limiting current density, which may mean that there is some relationship between corrosion and water resistance. The S sample of the ceramic resin series showed the relatively best corrosion and water resistance among those of samples, while the worst corrosion and water resistance were observed for the R sample of the epoxy resin series. The corrosion and water resistance of those samples tended to deteriorate with an increase in the immersion days, and their corrosion and water resistances were considered to be apparently improved by the types of resin and additives.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a corrosion inhibitor on the pitting corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys used in electric vehicle battery cooling systems within a mixture of ethylene glycol and water (EG-W) coolant. Potentiodynamic polarization testing revealed unstable passive film formation on the aluminum alloys in the absence of SDBS. However, the addition of SDBS resulted in a robust passive film, enhancing the pitting corrosion resistance across all examined alloys. Pitting corrosion was predominantly observed near intermetallic compounds in the presence of Cl? ions, which was attributed to galvanic interactions. Among tested alloys, A1040 demonstrated superior resistance due to its lower areal fraction of precipitates and donor density. The incorporation of SDBS inhibitors mitigated the overall pitting corrosion process by hindering Cl? ion penetration. These findings suggest that SDBS can significantly improve pitting corrosion resistance in aluminum alloys employed in battery coolant environments.

  • The combined process of porous type anodizing and desiccation treatment was applied to improve wettability of A1050 aluminum alloy. The water contact angles of anodized samples were increaseds considerably with desiccation treatment. However, there was no considerable effect of polishing and anodizing time on water contact angle. The corrosion behavior with the treatments was investigated electrochemically. The corrosion resistance of the samples in 3.5 mass% NaCl solutions increased with higher contact angle. Anodized and desiccated samples showed better corrosion resistance than un-desiccated samples around rest potential region.

  • Due to the electric power shortage in summer season and regulation of freon refrigerant, the application of gas absorption refrigeration and hot water systems are considerably increasing trend. But, this system consists of condenser, heat exchanger, supply pipe and radiator etc. which are easily corroded by acidity and dissolved oxygen and gases. In result, this system occurs scale attachment and corrosion damage like pitting and crevice corrosion. In this study, electrochemical polarization test of heat exchanger tubing material (copper, aluminium brass, 30% cupronickel(30% Cu-Ni)) was carried out in 60% lithium bromide solution at $95^{\circ}C$. As a result of polarization test, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and local corrosion. such as galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion behavior, of tubing materials was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pitting and crevice corrosion control of 30% cupronickel in 60% LiBr solution at $95^{\circ}C$ is very excellent. (2) Dissimilar metal corrosion of 30% cupronickel coupling to aluminium bronze is the most sensitive. (3) Current density behavior of tube materials by impressed potential is high in order of copper > aluminium brass > 30% cupronickel.

  • Crevice corrosion is a localized attack of metal that occurs in occluded areas of materials as a result of a degradation of the oxide passivity on the metal surface in contact with stagnant environments. Materials suffer crevice corrosion when generally the crevice opening gap is so narrow that the migration or diffusion of ionic species into the crevice can be restricted and consequently results in the production of aggressive crevice solutions and differential aeration conditions over time. Among several factors affecting the crevice corrosion, differential aeration causing oxygen depletion associated with the geometry of components, acidification, and accumulation of aggressive species (e.g., Cl-, SO4-2, NO3- ) in the crevice solution become main aspects of the mechanism of the crevice corrosion. Thus, controlling such factors is most critically necessary to either prevents or terminates the crevice corrosion. This paper covers electrochemical aspects of the crevice corrosion, roles of critical factors affecting the crevice corrosion, and electrochemical processes of impurity species in the crevice in high temperature water. A better and clear understanding of mechanisms of the crevice corrosion is important to develop the protection and mitigation technology against the crevice corrosion in order for maintaining the integrity and longevity of structural components at various industries

  • Duplex stainless steels (UNS S32205, UNS S32750) are used in various environments. The potentiodynamic polarization tests were conducted at 30 ℃ in order to study the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of duplex stainless steels under different seawater concentrations (fresh water, seawater, mixed water). The results of Tafel analysis in seawater showed that UNS S32205 and UNS S32750 had the highest corrosion current densities at 6.12 × 10-4 mA/cm2 and 5.41 × 10-4 mA/cm2, respectively. The pitting potentials of UNS S32205 and UNS S32750 were comparable to or higher than the oxygen evolution potential in fresh water, mixed water, and seawater. The maximum damage depths and surface damage ratio caused by pitting corrosion increased with chloride concentration. The synergy effect of molybdenum and nitrogen enhances the concentration of Mo, Ni, and Cr at the interface of the metal-electrolyte. In particular, in the case of nitrogen, NH3 and NH4+ are formed to compensate for the pH drop in the pitting region, thereby strengthening the repassivation of the film. The excellent corrosion resistance of UNS S32750 is attributed to the strengthening effect of the chromium oxide film due to the presence of molybdenum and nitrogen.

  • In the present study, polyester-melamine coating systems with natural wood fiber (NWF) were prepared and the effects of NWF on the corrosion protectiveness of the polyester-melamine coating were examined using EIS analysis. From the results, higher average surface roughness was observed with increase of NWF content. Water diffusivity and water uptake into the polyester-melamine coatings with NWF were much higher than that into the pure polyester-melamine coating. The decrease in the impedance modulus |Z| was associated with the localized corrosion on carbon steel, confirming that corrosion protection of the polyester-melamine coatings with NWF well agrees with its water transport behavior.

  • In corrosion-sensitive area of exsisting unpainted weathering steel bridge with closed box girder structure. there are some serious local corrosion problems because of rain water or dew water which can not be solved by conventional maintenance method. These problems must be technically controled because of the influence on the safety of bridge. This study is the first stage of developing the economic corrosion control manual for these local corrosion problems. Through the injecting experiment of tar sealant into the crevice of mock-up equipment, it was proofed that the corrosive sealant can be useful to corrosion control at crevice of corrosion sensitive area.
