Surface treatments of environmentally friendly Cr-free organic compounds for corrosion protection of metals (금속의 내식성 향상을 위한 환경 친화형 무크롬 유기화합물의 표면처리)

  • This work aims the search of environmentally friendly pre-treatment technologies to develop chromate replacements for metal finishing industries due to its toxicological properties. Since the corrosion resistance of steel was strongly related to water permeation, galvanized steel sheets were treated with various hydrophobic silane compounds and water-suspended polymer solution. Also, plasma gas discharge was applied to modify the surface of a polymer coated-steel sheet to be hydrophobic. The surface hydrophobicity of materials was introduced by CF$_3$H plasma exposure. The corrosion property before and after the plasma treatment was investigated in a slat spray tester with 3.5 wt.% NaCl at 35$^{\circ}C$. The results showed that both silane/polymer double coatings and plasma treatment of the galvanized steel exhibited significant retardation of corrosion.

  • Generally, material for radiator of automobile is composed of Al-alloy, but part of radiator material is still composed of Cu. Specially, Al-alloy replaces Cu and Cu-alloy as cooling and heating system material for light weight. Therefore, galvanic electronic cell is formed between Al-alloy and Cu for automobile radiator material, and Al-alloy corrosion is accelerated. So, in this study, galvanic corrosion test of Al-alloy coupling with Cu was carried out in distilled water, tap water, polluted environment and non-freezing solution. And thus corrosion potential and galvanic currrent density of Al-alloy coupling with Cu is investigated.

  • This experiment from March 1, 1998 to August 31, 2001 through XRD, XRF, SEM, EDS had effects as follows. 1. According to the results of test using XRD and EDS, we found that the main ingredients causing corrosion of steel pipe was ${Fe_2}{O_3}$, that of cast iron pipe was $CaCO_3$. 2. The main ingredient of corrosion products in a water pipe was Fe. On an average Fe occuied 93.36% of corrosion products in case of steel pipe while it did 85.47% in case of cast iron pipe. 3. In case of a piped water passed through SCALE BUSTER over 10 times, the corrosion products decreased largely by the galvanic effect and sacrifical anode caused by the concerntration of Zn.

Corrosion resistant self-compacting concrete using micro and nano silica admixtures

  • In this paper, enhancement of corrosion and chloride resistance of high performance self compacting concrete (SCC) through incorporating nanosilica into the binder has been investigated. For this purpose, different mixtures were designed with different amounts of silica fume and nano silica admixtures. Different binder contents were also investigated to observe the binder content effect on the concrete properties. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by chloride penetration and resitivity tests. Water absorption and capillary absorption were also measured as other durability-related properties. The results showed that water absorption, capillary absorption and Cl ion percentage decreased rather significantly in the mixtures containing admixtures especially blend of silica fume and nano silica. By addition of the admixtures, resistivity of the SCC mixtures increased which can lead to reduction of corrosion probability.

  • ORV which vaporizes LNG to NG is consisted of tube and header whose substrate is aluminum alloy. The corrosion of the tube is very severe because of sea water being used as the heating source. In this research to protect ORV substrate material, the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys was investigated for the sacrificial role of Al-Zn alloy for ORV tubes. The electrochemical behavior of aluminum alloys in sea water was investigated. The corrosion behavior of thermally-sprayed and cladded samples were compared through salt spray tests. Al-Zn alloy can act as a sacrificial anode and cladded Al-Zn alloy has a better corrosion resistance than that of thermally sprayed one. The galvanic effect of Al-Zn to substrate material was conformed from scratched sample tests.

  • In this study, we evaluated corrosion behavior of a common rolling stock axle material, RSA1, in seawater. 3-electrode electrochemical cell experiment was conducted using artificial sea water, fabricated according to ASTM-D1141 set by American Society for Testing and Materials, where the corrosion current density and corrosion rate were determined to be $18.3{\mu}A/cm2$ and 0.217 mm/yr, respectively, by employing potentiodynamic test method and impedance spectroscopy method. Considering the fact that life time of railway car is ~25 years, the expected corrosion layer depth is 5mm. Constant-current corrosion test was conducted to accelerate the corrosion process, to reach corrosion periods of 1,3 and 4 years based on Faraday's law, followed by tension tests where the reduced specimen gauge cross-section was re-measured for stress calculation. While no apparent corrosion-related changes in mechanical properties were observed in the elastic regime, the reduction in ductility of the material was found to be increased as the corrosion period increased. The results of this study are expected to be basic corrosion data for the design of rolling stock axles, which will be operated in the sea water environment.

Effects of NaCl Concentration and Solution Temperature on the Galvanic Corrosion Between CFRP and A516Gr.55 Carbon Steel

  • CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) is composed of carbon fiber and plastic resin, and is approximately 20 - 50% lighter than metallic materials. CFRP has a low density, higher specific stiffness, specific strength, and high corrosion resistance. Because of these excellent properties, which meet various regulation conditions needed in the industrial fields, CFRP has been widely used in many industries including aviation and ship building. However, CFRP reveals water absorption in water immersion or high humidity environments, and water absorption occurs in an epoxy not carbon fiber, and can be facilitated by higher temperature. Since these properties can induce volume expansion inside CFRP and change the internal stress state and degrade the chemical bond between the fiber and the matrix, the mechanical properties including bond strength may be lowered. This study focused on the effects of NaCl concentration (0.01 - 1% NaCl) and solution temperature ($30-75^{\circ}C$) on the galvanic corrosion between CFRP and A516Gr.55 carbon steel. When NaCl concentration increases 10 times, corrosion rate of a specimen was not affected, but that of galvanic coupled carbon steel increased by 46.9% average. However, when solution temperature increases $10^{\circ}C$, average corrosion rate increased approximately 22%, regardless of single or galvanic coupled specimen.

  • Due to the rapid development of the industry, the use of iron is increasing rapidly in various industrial fields. Among these iron use areas, problems caused by corrosion of iron are seriously occurring in water-related industries. In particular, as the importance of environmental management has emerged, the water industry market desperately needs to replace aging water infra structure due to corrosion. In order to overcome this problem, research on a method capable of corrosion prevention system is being actively conducted. As the method for corrosion prevention system has various voltages and currents applied depending on the surrounding environment, the demand for an appropriate voltage regulator is increasing rapidly. In particular, as the IOT industry develops, the capacity of corrosion prevention system is increasing by expanding the area in which the method machine operates. Therefore, rectifiers for preventing corrosion are being changed from conventional flyback systems suitable for small capacities to inverter-type rectifiers suitable for large capacities. The inverter-type rectifier has various problems by reducing it to the initial rush current when starting. Therefore, this paper proposes a new starting method that can reduce initial inrush current in inverter-type rectifiers. T he proposed method can secure DC phase voltage for stable operation of the inverter by implementing discontinuous boosting operation using the switch of the inverter. In addition, the excellence of the proposed method was verified through simulations and experiments.

Effect of Corrosion Environment on the Fretting Wear Corrosion of a Hinge Material( I ) (힌지재료의 찰과마멸부식에 미치는 부식환경의 영향( I ))

  • The fretting wear corrosion characteristics between the SM20C and the SM20C, the YBsC3 and the STC4H was experimented by using radical type friction experimental device under the corrosion environment of atmosphere, neutral solution, acid solution and chemical factors of the sea water. The affection of underground water that affect fretting wear corrosion of the SM20C which is moving specimen was more sensitive at the STC4H and more insensible at the YBsC3. The affection of underground water that affect fretting wear corrosion of the STC4H was less, but in the $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ and $0.5\%\;HNO_3$ solutions the fretting wear corrosion of the STC4H was more large. The fretting wear corrosion of the SM20C which is moving specimen in the underground water was less than in the $3.5\%\;NaCl$, $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ and $0.5\%\;HNO_3$ solutions. As time passed, the fretting wear corrosion is increased in the $HNO_3$ solution and dull in the $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ solution.

Corrosion Property Evaluation of Copper Alloy Tubes against Sea Water

  • In this study, the corrosion property of copper alloy tubes in seawater has been investigated. Three copper alloys of nominal composition Cu-20Zn-2Al(Al-Brass), Cu-30Ni(CN70/30) and Cu-10Ni(CN90/10) were considered. The samples were immersed in 3%NaCl flowing solution at $90^{\circ}C$ for 30, 50 and 80 days. Corrosion rate of copper alloy tubes in 3%NaCl flowing solution was investigated by weight-loss measurements and electrochemical test. The CN70/30 showed lowest corrosion rate among three copper alloy tubes. Because of passive films formation, corrosion rates of three types of copper tubes were decrease with time. Surface characteristics of copper alloy tubes were analyzed by optical micrograph(OM), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) and X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD). CN70/30 showed partly pitting problem on the surface owing to high Fe content, even though having high resistant against corrosion. Cracks appeared on the surface of CN90/10 and CN70/30 after more than 50 days immersion, which could be derived from high nickel contents.
