  • In this study, we developed a method to determine the flood-limited water levels of agricultural reservoirs, considering both their irrigation and flood control functions. Irrigation safety and flood safety indices were defined to be applied to various reservoirs, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the irrigation and flood control properties. Seasonal flood-limited water level scenarios were established to represent the temporal characteristics of rainfall and agricultural water supply and the safety indices were analyzed according to these scenarios. The optimal scenarios were derived using a schematic solution based on Pareto front analysis. The method was applied to Obong, Yedang, and Myogok reservoirs, and the results showed that the characteristics of each reservoir were well represented in the safety indices. The irrigation safety of Obong reservoir was found to be significantly influenced by the late-stage flood-limited water level, while those of Yedang and Myogok reservoir were primarily affected by the early and mid-stage flood-limited water levels. The values of irrigation safety and flood safety indices for each scenario were plotted as points on the coordinate plane, and the optimal flood-limited water levels were selected from the Pareto front. The storage ratio of the optimal flood-limited water levels for the early, mid, and late stages were 65-70%, 70%, and 75% for Obong reservoir, 75%, 70-75%, and 65-70% for Yedang reservoir, and 75-80%, 70%, and 50% for Myogok reservoir. We expect that the method developed in this study will facilitate efficient reservoir operations.

  • In this paper, the self-organizing fuzzy logic controller is developed for water level control of steam generator. In comparison with conventional fuzzy logic controllers, this controller performs control task with no control rules at initial and creates control rules as control behavior goes on, and also modifies its control structure when uncertain disturbance is suspected. Selected parameters in the fuzzy logic controller are updated on-line by the gradient descent loaming algorithm based on the performance cost function. This control algorithm is applied to water level control of steam generator model developed by Lee, et al. The computer simulation results confirm good performance of this control algorithm in all power ranges. This control algorithm can be expected to be used for automatic control of feedwater control system in the nuclear power plant with digital instrumentation and control systems.

  • In order to compare the effect of water quality on two service systems, tank and direct connection service, we selected randomly 30 rooftop tanks installed in the buildings with five or fewer floors, and collected water samples from each tank as well as tap water by direct service. At the same time each tank was investigated on their cleanliness and sanitary control. 30 water samples from direct service met Korean Drinking water quality standard. But 5 tank water samples(17%) were not able to meet Coliform or Total Colony Counts standard and free chlorine of 12 tank water samples(40%) were less than 0.2mg/L. Also Fe, Turbidity, TOC, Total Algae in tank water were higher than tap water on direct service. We concluded that thorough health control of water tank is necessary and conversion into direct connection service results in improving tap water quality importantly.

  • A study of fluoride effects on teeth of school children was conducted in order to determine the usefulness of fluoride for preventing dental caries. Nine hundred and thirty six(936) elementary school children were selected from Chongju where children drank fluoridated water. Eight hundred and thirty six(836) from Seoul where children applied fluoride topically, and eight hundred and three(803) from Kumi where the children drank non fluoridated water(control). DMFs of school children were compared by the sources of fluoride. This study was conducted from May 1, through June 15, 2000. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The DMF rate of male school children topically applying fluoride was 51.4%, that of female children was 56.1%, and that of both males and females was 54.0%, The DMF rate of male children of control group was 72.4%, that of females was 77.5% and that of both males and females was 74.8%. 2. The DMF rate of male children drinking fluoridated tap water was 56.1%, that of females was 54.1%, and that of both males and females was 55.5%. The rates of control group were 72.4% for males, 77.5% for females and 74.8% for male and female children respectively. 3. The difference of DMF rates between the group of children who drank fluoridated water and applied fluoride topically, and control group was statistically significant. 4. The difference of DMF rates between the children who drank fluoridated water and the children who applied fluoride topically were not statistically significant. 5. The difference of DMFT rates between 5th graders who applied fluoride topically and the 5th graders of control group was not statistically significant. However, the difference of DMFT rates of the 6th graders who applied fluoride topically and the same graders of control group were statistically significant. The difference of DMF rates between 5th and 6th graders who drank fluoridated tap water and the same graders of control group was statistically significant. 6. The difference of DMFT rates between children drinking fluoridated tap water and children applying fluoride topically was statistically significant.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the control variables according to condensation occurrence, to find the range in floor surface temperature and frequency of condensation, and to evaluate the control methods through simulations when the radiant heating system is used for cooling. Through the simulation analysis the control methods such as on/off control, variable flow control and outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control are evaluated and compared. The results show that the lowest floor surface temperature is around $23^{\circ}C$, the surface condensation can be prevented by controlling indoor humidity within 20g/kg(DA0, and that outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control is more appropriate than on/off control and variable flow control with regard to prevention of the condensation and thermal comfort.

  • The characteristics of tidal circulation with the flow-control structures using the three-dimensional numerical model (POM, Princeton Ocean Model) of Chinhae Bay, Korea were investigated. To confirm th efficiencies of flow-control structures, the training wall and submerged training wall were constructed at the mouth and narrow channel in Chinhae Bay. On the basis of the present investigation, the tidal circulation induced by the construction of flow-control structures could enhance the water exchange improvement appropriately. And, th training wall at the central is more dominated than the other structures for the efficient of water exchange. The sites and types of structure and flow patterns seem to be very sensitive in tidal simulation and changes in flow fields.

  • Alone the southwesten coast of Korean peninsula, the extensive available arable acreages suited for forming are found in the development of tidal flats in the geographically curved bays with a motable tidal emplitude. It was found that the developments of these tidal flats cover an estimated area more than 276,000ha. In this paper, a flood control system by Pul's Storage Indication Method and Pul's Graphical Method at Return Periods-50 yrs, design rainfall-267mm per 48hrs and design flood-926c.m.s. and at 0.2meter control height above the High Water Ordinary Spring Tide Level (+11.0m) was studied. At the result, the flood demage in the reservoir at Return Periods-50 yrs and the tidal level at H.W.O.S.T.L. were satisfied to the below E.L. 11.20m (Flood Level in the reservoir). Well skilled flood control technique and management and control of draining sluice gate should be required for the disaster prevention from the flood and tide damage.

  • Rain data and water-level data are importantly used for dam operation at flood period. Because dams are directly controlled by the water-level data, the characteristic of the water-level gauges is necessary to be managed. Thus, we developed the standard test facility and method for testing the water-level gauges which are a float type, a supersonic type and a radar type. And we calculated the uncertainty of the standard test facility to maintain the accuracy of water-level gauges. Through development of this facility, we could obtain the characteristics and the calibration factor of the water-level gauges. And, this study showed that the standard test facility can be widely used for dam operation and basin management.
