  • In this study, the removal of MB from saline solutions was evaluated by two methods by adsorption and electrodialysis; the adsorption of the mixture dye/salt on dried orange peel waste (OPW) was studied in batch method. In this study the biosorption of cationic dye by OPW was investigated as a function of initial solution pH, and initial salt (sodium chloride) concentration. The maximal dye uptake at $pH{\geq}3.6$ in the absence and in the presence of salt and the dye uptake diminished considerably in the presence of increasing concentrations of salt up to 8 g/L. The Redlich Peterson and Langmuir were the most suitable adsorption models for describing the biosorption equilibrium data of the dye both individually and in salt containing medium. As well, this work deals with the electrodialysis application to remove the dye. Synthetic solutions were used for the investigation of the main operational factors affecting the treatment performance; such as applied voltage, pH, initial dye concentration and ionic strength. The experimental results for adsorption and electrodialysis confirmed the importance of electrostatic interactions on the dye. The electrodialysis process with standard ion exchange membranes enabled efficient desalination of cationic dye solutions; there are two main factors in fouling: electrostatic interaction between cations of dyes and the fixed charged groups of the CEM, and affinity interactions.

  • The present study investigated a novel calcium hydroxide-coated dairy manure-derived biochar (Ca-BC) for adsorption of phosphate from water and dairy wastewater. The Ca-BC showed much higher adsorption of phosphate than that of dairy manure-derived biochar. The Ca-BC possessed mainly the calcium hydroxide and various functional groups resulting in high reactivity between phosphate and calcium hydroxide in the Ca-BC. The adsorption of phosphate onto Ca-BC followed pseudo-second order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models indicating chemisorptive interaction occurred on energetically heterogeneous surface of Ca-BC. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Ca-BC was higher than those of iron oxide and zinc oxide-coated biochars, but lower than those of CaO- and MgO-coated biochars. However, the Ca-BC showed high reactivity per surface area for adsorption of phosphate indicating importance of surface functionalization of biochar. On the other hand, the adsorption of phosphate in dairy wastewater on Ca-BC was lower than that in water owing to competition between other anions in wastewater and phosphate. Overall, the Ca-BC would be a low cost and effective adsorbent for recovery of phosphate from water and wastewater.

  • Altered Langmuir adsorption isotherm has been suggested for adsorption reactions occurring in aqueous environment based upon the concept of the steric displacement between adsorbates and water molecules at the surface of adsorbent. For the adsorption of $Cd^{2+}$ on activated carbon, the suggested adsorption isotherm was shown to be more well applied to the experimental results compared with the classical Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Based on this, regarding the adsorption system which following the Langmuir model more precise design and controllable operation of the process were considered to be attainable when the adsorption process is analyzed employing the altered adsorption isotherm.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characterization of iron oxide nanotubes (INTs) by anodization method and applied adsorption isotherms and kinetic models for phosphate adsorption. SEM analysis was conducted to examine the INTs surface formation. Further XRD and XPS analysis were performed to observe the crystal structure of INTs before and after phosphate adsorption. AFM analysis was conducted to determine of Fe foil surface before and after anodization. Phosphate stock solution for adsorption experiment was prepared by $KH_2PO_4$. The batch experiment was conducted using 20 ml phosphate stock solution and $40cm^3$ of INTs in 50 ml conical tube. Adsorption isotherms were applied Langmuir and Freundlich models for adsorption equilibrium test of INTs. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of adsorption rate by reaction time. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) values of Langmuir and Freundlich models were 0.9157 and 0.8876 respectively.

  • Usual experimental adsorption isotherms as a function of relative humidity were constructed from adsorbed water contents in soils, which were kept more than 2 days in vacuum desiccators with constant humidities controlled by sulfuric acids of various concentrations. From the experimental data, the adsorption surface areas were calculated on the basis of the existing adsorption theory, such as Langmuir, BET, and Aranovich. Based on the Gibbs function describing chemical potential of perfect gas, the relative humidities in the desiccators were transformed into their chemical potentials, which were assumed to be the same as the potentials of equilibratedly adsorbed water in soils. Moreover, the water potentials were again transformed into the equivalent capillary pressures, heads of capillary rise, and equivalent radius of capillary pores, on the basis of Laplace equation for surface tension pressure of spherical bubbles in water. Adsorption quantity distributions were calculated on the profile of chemical potentials of the adsorbed water, equivalent adsorption and/or capillary pressures, and equivalent capillary radius. The suggested theories were proved through its application for the prediction of temperature rise of sulfuric acid due to hydration heat. Adsorption heat calculated on the basis of the potential difference was dependant on various factors, such as surface area, equilibrium constants in Langumuir, BET, etc.

  • The widespread occurrence of dissolved endocrine disrupting compounds(EDCs) and pharmaceutical active compounds(PhACs) in water sources is of concern due to their adverse effects. To remove these chemicals, adsorption of EDCs/PhACs on granular activated carbon(GAC) was investigated, and bisphenol A, carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and sulfamethoxazole were selected as commonly occurring EDCs/PhACs in the aquatic environment. Various adsorption isotherms were applied to evaluate compatability with each adsorption in the condition of single-solute. Removal difference between individual and competitive adsorption were investigated from the physicochemical properties of each adsorbate. Hydrophobicity interaction was the main adsorption mechanism in the single-solute adsorption with order of maximum adsorption capacity as bisphenol A > carbamazepine > sulfamethoxazole > diclofenac > ibuprofen, while both hydrophobicity and molecular size play significant roles in competitive adsorption. Adsorption kinetic was also controled by hydrophobicity of each adsorbate resulting in higher hydrophobicity allowed faster adsorption on available adsorption site on GAC. EDCs/PhACs adsorption on GAC was determined as an endothermic reaction resulting in better adsorption at higher temperature ($40^{\circ}C$) than lower temperature ($10^{\circ}C$).

  • Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was used to remove four kinds of trihalomethanes(THMs) from tap water which were remained as by-products during the chlorination of water. Adsorption capacity was investigated as a function of THMs concentration and solution temperature, and adsorption mechanism was studied in relating to the surface characteristics of ACF. All the four kinds of THMs were rapidly adsorbed on the surface of ACF by physical adsorption due to the enormous surface micropores and chemical adsorption due to the hydrogen bonds, showing a Langmuir type adsorption isotherm. Langmuir type is especially profitable for the adsorption of low level adsorptives. ACF was very effective for the removal of THMs from tap water because the THMs concentration is below $30{\mu}g/L$ in tap water. The adsorption amount of THMs on ACF increased in order of the number of brom atom; chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform. The adsorption capacity increased as increasing the number of brom atom due to the decrease of polarity in solution. The adsorption capacity of THMs on ACF can be enhanced by proper surface treatment of ACF.
