  • Recently, starting with the permanent suspension of Gori 1 in Korea, the importance of the disposal of concrete structures in nuclear power plants has emerged, and environmental and safety are required to be proved accordingly. Safe radioactive waste disposal technology that immobilizes harmful radioactive elements, which are by-products of nuclear power, inside a solid matrix and recycling measures are needed to secure an efficient waste disposal space. This study was conducted to confirm whether recycled cement generated in the process of radioactive concrete treatment can be used as a solidifying material for radioactive waste treatment. In order to simulate the concrete exposed to radiation, aqueous solutions of Di-water, CsCl 1M, and CoCl2 1M were used as blending water at W/B 0.5. Tricalcium phosphate and Prussian blue were substituted with 5 wt.% based on the weight of recycled cement as a binder to improve solidification performance, and their hydration characteristic was analyzed.

  • In this study, to use as basic data for the organic waste resource energy incentive system, the energy efficiency is evaluated through the mass balance and energy balance calculation results of the anaerobic digester where food waste, food waste leachate and various organic wastes are treated. As a result of the mass balance analysis for 11 biogasification facilities, it was confirmed that 21.1% of process water and 25.7% of tap water were input in large amounts, excluding organic waste. Accordingly, it accounted for 87.6% of the total effluent of linked treated water. In addition, considering that 15.7% of the total input volume is converted to biogas and the average total solids (TS) is 22%, an average material conversion rate of 75% was confirmed. As a result of the energy balance analysis, the energy conversion rate was confirmed to be 78.5% on average by analyzing the biogas calorific value compared to the potential energy of the influent. The average biogas production efficiency including external energy sources for biogas production was 69.4%, and the biogas plant efficiency to which unused effluent energy was applied was 58.9% on average.

  • This paper is to study the heat transfer performance of the copper-water heat pipe with screen wicks. Recently, the semiconductor capacity of an electronic unit becomes larger, but its size becomes much smaller. As a result, a high- performance cooling system is needed. Experimental variables are inclination angles, temperatures of cooling waters and the mesh number of screen wicks. The distilled water was used as a working fluid. Based on the experimental results, when the copper-water heat pipe of 6mm diameter is used at the top heat mode, the heat transfer performance of 100 mesh 2 layers heat pipe is better than that of 150 and 200 mesh. The thermal resistance of the two layers with the 100-mesh screen was 0.7-$0.8^{\circ}C$/W.

  • Reaction by neighbours to odours is increasingly affecting operations of existing animal farming operations and may adversely constrain the further development of the animal production industry in some parts of Australia. It is critical that the scale of such odour impact on the rural-urban interface be estimated to provide useful information both for environmental protection and animal farming operations. Furthermore, the information can be used to modify odour reduction strategies as economic conditions change. The Centre for Water and Waste Technology at The University of New South Wales has developed a comprehensive set of odour control techniques in the course of its research and development effort over the past eight years. Techniques have been developed for odour sampling at point, area and volume sources, monitoring environmental parameters such as ventilation rate, shed temperature, shed humidity, litter water content and ambient meteorological condition, olfactometry and odour dispersion modelling. The work has paved the way for the establishment of odour reduction strategies based on best environmental management practice and advanced odour abatement technologies.

  • The electro-chemical removal (ECR) of water pollutants by metal-ACF electrodes from wastewater was investigated over wide range of ECR time. The ECR capacities of metallic ACF electrodes were related to physical properties such as adsorption isotherm, surface area and pore size and to reaction time. Surface morphologies and elemental analysis for the metal supported ACFs after electro-catalytic reaction were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) to explain the changes in adsorption properties. The IR spectra of metallic ACFs for the investigation of functional groups show that the electro-catalytic treatment is consequently associated with the removal of pollutants with the increasing surface reactivity of the activated carbon fibers. The metal-ACFs were electro-catalytically reacted to waste water to investigate the removal efficiency for the COD, T-N, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N and $NO_2$-N. From these removal results of the piggery waste using metallic ACFs substrate, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The removal efficiency of the metallic ACFs substrate was mainly determined by the properties of the material for adsorption and trapping of organics, and catalytic effects.

  • Most river quality problems are generated by pollutants which are discharged into the river as a consequence of human activities. And eutrophication occurs when water is over enriched with nutrients, principally nitrate and phosphate. Both these nutrients are found in many waste products, especially sewage even when the waste is treated. Eutrophication is concerned in lakes, but it also causes problems in river. Wide growth of Phytoplankton in rivers, leads to blockage of channels, but the main concern is deoxygenation because of the increase in plant life's demand for oxygen in revers. Fish, plant and animals die due to lack of oxygen. The increase of algae floating on the tops of water looks ugly and has attracted public attention and concern in recent years. One way of controlling eutrophication is to restrict the amount of waste carrying nitrate or phosphate from entering the water in the first place. another way is to remove it from the water after it has been entered. This study was carried out to investigate on the trophic state, nutrients and Chlorophyll-a concentration in the Han River. The results were as follows:1. Concentrations of total nitrogen were 2.208~9.221(5.133)mg/$\ell$2. Concentrations of total phosphate were 0.045~0.614(0.195)mg/$\ell$3. Chlorophyll-a concentration were $0.0-25.3(9.6)mg/m^3$.4. The correlation coefficient between T-P and Chlorophyll-a concentration was r=-0.856 at Sungsan sampling site.5. The correlation coefficient was r=-0.578~-0.767, between Paldang Dam outflow and Chlorophyll-a concentration at all sampling sites.

  • To validate the previous conceptual design of cover system, construction of the engineered barrier test facility is completed and the performance tests of the disposal cover system are conducted. The disposal test facility is composed of the multi-purpose working space, the six test cells and the disposal information space for the PR center. The dedicated detection system measures the water content, the temperature, the matric potential of each cover layer and the accumulated water volume of lateral drainage. Short-term experiments on the disposal cover layer using the artificial rainfall system are implemented. The sand drainage layer shows the satisfactory performance as intended in the design stage. The artificial rainfall does not affect the temperature of cover layers. It is investigated that high water infiltration of the artificial rainfall changes the matric potential in each cover layer. This facility is expected to increase the public information about the national radioactive waste disposal program and the effort for the safety of the planned disposal facility.
