This study is to optimize design parameters for waste heat recovery boiler with water tube and three drum. The design optimization considered here is to find the most economic dimension of the boiler considered which results in a minimum cost in producing a unit amount of steam per given period of operation. For this purpose, optimize design have to determine what are the main parameters of affecting the total cost of producing a unit amount of steam which is comprised of manufacturing cost of the boiler, operating cost of the fan etc.
The features of precipitating reaction of fluoride have been examined by employing waste gypsum as a precipitant. The major component of waste gypsum was examined to be CaO with minor components of $SO_3$, $SiO_2$. In the experimental condition, the precipitating reaction of fluoride progressed rapidly within a few minutes after the reaction started and reached its equilibrium in 10 minutes. Kinetic analysis showed that the precipitating reaction of fluoride generally followed a first Oder and second Oder with decreasing rate constant with the initial dosage of precipitant. XRD analysis showed that the crystalline structure of precipitate was mainly $CaF_2$ with partly $Ca_5(PO_4)_3(OH)$.
Differences in risk perception on major environmental issues between general public and environmental experts were investigated in this study. Questionnaire surveys were conducted to samples from general public and environmental experts during March and April, 2000. Total number of responses was 1,126 including 773 persons from general public and 353 experts. Risk perceptions on 26 environmental issues were related with the need to regulate each issue, controllability, experience, political views, interest in environmental problem, satisfaction of environment, severity of environmental pollution. There was statistically significant difference in risk perceptions between general public and experts. Overall, general public was likely to perceive risks associated with environmental problem, as well as social need to regulate these problems more than experts. The issues with high risk perception and need to regulate were 'automobile exhaust', 'industrial air pollution', ocean pollution by industrial waste and oil exhaust', 'air pollution by chemicals', 'surface water pollution by waste from household', 'industrial and hospital waste', 'surface water pollution by pesticide'and'sewage and food waste'. Consequently, it seems necessary to manage these issues, prior to others.
Highly radioactive waste is placed in metal canisters embedded in dense clay termed buffer. The radioactive decay is associated with heat production, which causes degradation of the buffer and thereby time-dependent loss of its waste-isolating potential. The buffer is prepared by compacting air-dry smectite clay powder and is initially not fully water saturated. The evolution of the buffer starts with slow wetting by uptake of water from the surrounding rock followed by a long period of exposure to heat, pressure from the rock and chemical reactants. It can be described by conceptual and theoretical models describing processes related to temperature (T), hydraulic (H), mechanical (M) and chemical performance (C). For temperatures below 90 C more than 75 % of the smectite will be preserved for 100 000 years but cementation may reduce the excellent performance of the buffer to a yet not known extention.
Solubilization pretreatments were conducted to enhance the anaerobic digestion of the waste activated sludge. Four pretreatment techniques including heating, sonication freezing and thawing, and enzyme addition were employed to solubilize the waste activated sludge under various conditions. Thermal pretreatment by heating showed the highest efficiency compared with other methods, and freezing and thawing was confirmed as a feasible alternative of solubilization as well as the pretreatment of dewatering. There is a clear correlation between the solubilization efficiency of the waste activated sludge and the gas production. Batch digestion results showed the cumulative gas production as much as four times after thermal pretreatment as compared with that by the control sludge without pretreatment. As a result, hydrolysis or solubilization pretreatment might play a significant role in the high rate digestion of the waste activated sludge.
Fuel cells supply electric power and heat at work, and their exhaust gas is comparatively clear. So they are in the limelight as one of the co-generation systems which behave friendly with the environment. Fuel cells discharge both steam and hot water. Accordingly, if we combine absorption heat pump driven by waste heat with fuel cells, we can construct an advanced energy conserving system. The purpose of this study is the objective for evaluating the possibilities of effectively utilizing waste heat of fuel cells as a heat source for the single and double effect absorption systems. Simulation studies on single and double effect absorption have been performed for water/lithium-bromide pair. The effectiveness of introducing a waste heat source of fuel cells is demonstrated. The result of this study showed that total efficiency was about 85% at rated operation and about 75% at 75% load operation. Absorption cycle moved to more strong concentration when fuel cell operated at 75% load.
The paper describes and quantifies the wastes arising in the nuclear fuel cycle for Light Water Reactors, Heavy Water Reactors and Fast Breeder Reactors. The management and disposal technologies are indicated, together with their environmental impacts. Both once-through and uranium-plutonium recycle systems are evaluated, and comparisons are made on the basis of tingle reference technologies for waste management, and for one gigawatt/year of electricity generation. Environmental impacts are assessed, particularly that of health and safety, and a reference costing system is applied purely as a basis for comparing the fuel cycles. From this study it call be concluded generally that the relative differences of the impacts of waste management and disposal between the selected fuel cycles are not decisive factors in choosing a fuel cycle. Employing the technologies assumed, the radioactive wastes from any of the fuel cycles studied can be managed and disposed of with a high degree of safety and without undue risk to man or the environment. The cost of waste management and disposal is only a few percent of the value of the electricity generated and does not vary greatly between fuel cycles.
The adsorption characteristics of malachite green on waste garnet have been investigated for its treatment from aqueous solution by employing waste garnet which is generated from the abrasive production process as an adsorbent. The influential factors examined were the initial concentration of malachite green in solution, reaction temperature, and the amount of adsorbent. Also, the effect of the modification of the surface of adsorbent on adsorption was examined. As the initial malachite green was increased with reaction temperature and the color removal of malachite green-containing solution was promoted with the amount of adsorbent. Finaly, increased adsorption of malachite green could be attained when the surface of glass was modified by hexamethyldisilazane.

The aim of this investigation is to prepare geopolymer resin by alkali activation of ceramic waste (AACW) with different sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and liquid sodium silicate (LSS) concentrations. In order to prepare geopolymer cement, AACW was replaced by 10 and 30 % by weight (wt.,) of concrete waste (CoW) as well as 10 and 30 wt., % ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS). The results showed that, the compressive strength of AACW increases with the increase of activator content up to 15:15 wt., % NaOH: LSS. All AACW hardened specimens activated by 3:3 (MC6), 6:6 (MC12), 12:12 (MC24) and 15:15 wt., % (MC30) NaOH: LSS destroyed when cured in water for 24h. The MC18 mix showed higher resistivity to water curing. The results also showed that, the replacement of AACW containing 9:9 wt., % NaOH: LSS (MC18) by 10 (MCCo10) and 30 (MCCo30) wt., % CoWdecreased the compressive strength at all ages of curing. In contrast, the MCCo10 mix showed the lower chemically combined water content compared to MC18 mix. The MCCo30 mix showed the higher chemically combined water content compared to MC18 and MCCo10 mixes. The compressive strength and chemically combined water of all AACWmixes containing GGBFS (MCS10 and MCS30) were higher than those of AACWwith no GGBFS (MC18). As the amount of GGBFS content increases the chemically combined water increases. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) proved that as the amount of CoWcontent increases, the degree of crystallinity increases. Conversely, the replacement of AACW by GGBFS leads to increase the amorphiticity character. The infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the higher reactivity of GGBFS compared to CoW as a result of successive hydration products formation, enhancing the compaction of microstructure as observed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

This study was performed to find out the possibility that hot waste water from a thermoelectric power plant can be applied to Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by comparing the performance characteristics for use of the ocean surface water ($25^{\circ}C$) and hot waste water ($35^{\circ}C$) as a secondary fluid. The parameters considered in this study are four; superheating temperature, subcooling temperature, turbine efficiency, and pump efficiency. Main results of this study are summarized as follows : Overall efficiency of applying hot waste water to ORC is 87% higher than that of surface water. Thus it could be confirmed that hot waste water of the thermoelectric power plant can be applied to ORC.
