  • This paper presents the results of the geotechnical investigation and settlement analysis of a finished waste landfill to find the possibility of the site as a construction area. Also, the variations of the strength of the municipal waste after mixing with the several types of the particulate grouts are investigated. The materials of the grouts used in the experiment are Quick Lime, Portland Cement, Slag Cement and Geocrete Cement. The results of the geotechnical investigation show that the maximum dry unit weight of the waste becomes lower and optimum moisture content higher as the age of the disposed waste is younger and the organic content is higher. The thickness of the predicted differential settlements of the waste fill has large difference from location to location and the unconfined compression strength of the grout mixed waste from the experiment was higher in the order of Geocrete Cement, Slag Cement, Portland Cement and Quick Lime.

  • In this research, the possibility of wasted refractory powder pulverized from refractory block as an expansive admixture and additional alkaline stimulant for class two and three blast furnace slag cements (BSC) was assessed with its high content of free CaO or free MgO. As the replacement ratios of wasted refractory powder and blast furnace slag were increased, flow and air content were decreased, while unit volume weight was increased under same conditions. Compressive strength of mortar was increased with increased replacement ratio of wasted refractory powder, especially, in the case of class three BSC, the highest compressive strength was obtained when wasted refractory powder was replaced 10 %.

  • In this study, fundamental properties of high strength concrete containing blast furnace slag are investigated analyzed according to CBS-Dust replacement rate. As the CBS-Dust replacement rate increased, air content, fluidity and strength decreased, but concrete with 5~10 % of CBS-Dust showed excellent compressive strength in its early age. Therefore, 5~10 % substitution of CBS-Dust on high strength concrete containing blast furnace slag will have a positive effect on reducing waste disposal cost and improving the strength.

  • Slag cement and supersulfated slag cement were fabricated by mixing blast furnace slag and ordinary portland cement and adapted to solidify/stabilize heavy metal contained hazardous waste sludge. In case of slag cement, it showed continuous increase of their compressive strengths, which is attributed to the formation of the C-S-H, ettringite and monosulfate with STS sludge. However, BF and COREX sludge has a different shape and composition. therefore, adequate compressive strength could not be achieved with this slag cement. In case of the mixture of the each sludge like the STS-BF or the STS-COREX, the compressive strength over the standard level for disposing the wastes could be obtained with slag cement. The supersulfated slag cement that contain accelerators was very effective in solidifying the COREX sludge, which was difficult to solidify using different cement and obtained high compressive strength only for 3 days.

  • The most popular building material, concrete, is intrinsically linked to the advancement of humanity. Due to the ever-increasing complexity of cementitious systems, concrete formulation for desired qualities remains a difficult undertaking despite conceptual and methodological advancement in the field of concrete science. Recognising the significant pollution caused by the traditional cement industry, construction of civil engineering structures has been carried out successfully using Geopolymer Concrete (GPC), also known as High Performance Concrete (HPC). These are concretes formed by the reaction of inorganic materials with a high content of Silicon and Aluminium (Pozzolans) with alkalis to achieve cementitious properties. These supplementary cementitious materials include Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), a waste material generated in the steel manufacturing industry; Fly Ash, which is a fine waste product produced by coal-fired power stations and Silica Fume, a by-product of producing silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys. This result demonstrated that GPC/HPC can be utilised as a substitute for traditional Portland cement-based concrete, resulting in improvements in concrete properties in addition to environmental and economic benefits. This study explores utilising experimental data to train artificial neural networks, which are then used to determine the effect of supplementary cementitious material replacement, namely fly ash, Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and silica fume, on the compressive strength, tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity of concrete and to predict these values accordingly.

  • An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the strength characteristics of low cement ratio soil stabilizer. The low cement ratio soil stabilizer has been developed by the replacement of certain part of cement with by-product pozzolanic materials such as blast furnace slag, fly ash, waste gypsum and by using activator. A series of unconfined compressive strength tests were performed to investigate and obtain high-strength composite soil stabilizer with large amounts of blast furnace slag and fly ash. Test results show that there were better properties when blast furnace slag, fly ash, waste gypsum, and activator were added in proper ratio. The replacement of certain part of cement with by-product pozzolanic materials improved the strength and pore structure properties.

  • The large amount of energy is consumed in a process for keeping the high temperature melting pool. For this reason, in addition to the wastes input to keep the high temperature melting pool, it is necessary for an auxiliary fuel and LOx to throw into the melting pool. So in this study, using a new melting furnace system, the experiments to keep the melting pool with minimal energy without throwing an auxiliary fuel and LOx was carried out. Also it is hoped that the results of the experiment will be available to analyze keeping a melting pool and behavior in a melting furnace.

  • Acid mine drainage(AMD) is one of the most serious environmental concerns associated with the mining industry around the world. The objective of this study is to assess the potential of sewage sludge as a carbon source for sulfate reducing bacteria and waste lime and steel slag as a neutralize agent for acid mine drainage bioremediation for use in permeable reactive materials. The study was performed using synthetic AMD in six column experiments. The effluent solution was systematically analysed throughout the experiments. The results of the study indicated that sewage sludge, waste lime and steel slag were the most effective for the AMD treatment as a permeable reactive materials.

  • Fluorspar has been essential flux in steelmaking process. The main effects of fluorspar addition are lowering of the viscosity and melting temperature of slag. In recent years, due to the increasing price and environmental problem of fluorspar, various types of fluorspar substitute have been investigated. In this study, iron oxide by-products such as sinter dust, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) sludge and mill scale were developed as a substitute in terms of waste recycling. Several plant trials were carried out by addition of briquetted substitutes of $4{\sim}6$ kg/ton to compare with the fluorspar of $0.7{\sim}1$ kg/ton. The substitutes showed a similar behavior of slag formation, phosphorus removal and MgO saturation content.
