보어홀 처분 개념: 탄자니아의 폐밀봉선원 처분을 위한 제안 (Borehole Disposal Concept: A Proposed Option for Disposal of Spent Sealed Radioactive Sources in Tanzania)

  • 처분공 처분 개념은 아프리카의 방사성폐기물관리 방안의 향상을 위해서 남아프리카에너지주식회사(NECSA)에서 처음으로 제시되었다. 초기에 방사성폐기물의 지층처분방안이 고려되었으나, 지하수를 방사성폐기물 오염으로부터 보호하는 방안과 토양과 지하 암석의 균열지대를 통한 방사성 물질의 이동에 대한 조사가 불가피하게 필요했다. 이러한 이유로 처분공 처분개념이 연구되었다. 처분공 처분 개념은 폐기된 밀봉선원을 상대적으로 좁은 직경(260 mm)의 처분공 시설을 통해 처리 및 처분한다. 탄자니아는 장반감기 및 단반감기의 폐기된 밀봉선원을 방사성폐기물관리시설에 저장하고 있으며 폐기된 밀봉선원의 방사능은 1E-6 Ci 에서 8.8E+3 Ci의 범위로 분포한다. 그러나 영구 처분 문제는 여전히 해결하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 처분부지 면적이 적고, 이에 따라 인간침입 위험이 줄어드는 처분공 처분개념을 제시하였다.

고리 1호기 원자로 압력용기 절단과 포장 방법에 따른 처분 물량 산정 (Evaluation on Radioactive Waste Disposal Amount of Kori Unit 1 Reactor Vessel Considering Cutting and Packaging Methods)

  • 최근 국내에서는 월성 1호기 및 고리 1호기를 포함하여 운영 중인 원자력발전소가 노후화함에 따라 원전 해체에 대한 관심이 많이 증대되고 있다. 이와 관련하여 월성 1호기의 계속운전이 최근 결정되었으며, 고리 1호기의 경우 2017년 6월 영구정지하기로 결정되었다. 이에 본 논문에서는 상업용 원자로로서는 국내 최초로 해체가 예정된 고리 1호기에 대해, 원자로 압력용기 자체의 해체로 인해 발생하는 방사성폐기물 최종 처분량을 원자로 압력용기 절단 방법 및 방사성폐기물 처분용기를 고려하여 산정하였다. 처분용기를 고려한 방사성폐기물 처분량을 산정한 결과 원자로 압력용기 몸통 부위보다는 반구 형태의 헤드 부분을 작게 절단할수록 최종 처분량이 감소하는 것으로 예측되었다. 또한 경주 방폐장의 200 L 및 320 L 드럼 처분용 처분용기의 경우 무게 제한으로 인해 적재효율이 좋지 못한 것으로 나타났다.

  • South Korea has made remarkable achievements and gained many experiences on waste disposal and recycling, which help our country to develop cyclic economy and construct a harmonious society. This paper summarizes the policies, regulations and specific practices on waste disposal and recycling including industrial waste and household waste in South Korea so as to provide some references for the establishment of policies related to the waste recycling in our country.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO RISK-BASED POST-CLOSURE SAFETY EVALUATION OF COMPLEX RADIATION EXPOSURE SITUATIONS IN RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL

  • Embodying the safety of radioactive waste disposal requires the relevant safety criteria and the corresponding stylized methods to demonstrate its compliance with the criteria. This paper proposes a conceptual model of risk-based safety evaluation for integrating complex potential radiation exposure situations in radioactive waste disposal. For demonstrating compliance with a risk constraint, the approach deals with important exposure scenarios from the viewpoint of the receptor to estimate the resulting risk. For respective exposure situations, it considers the occurrence probabilities of the relevant exposure scenarios as their probability of giving rise to doses to estimate the total risk to a representative person by aggregating the respective risks. In this model, an exposure scenario is simply constructed with three components:radionuclide release, radionuclide migration and environment contamination, and interaction between the contaminated media and the receptor. A set of exposure scenarios and the representative person are established from reasonable combinations of the components, based on a balance of their occurrence probabilities and the consequences. In addition, the probability of an exposure scenario is estimated on the assumption that the initiating external factors influence release mechanisms and transport pathways, and its effect on the interaction between the environment and the receptor may be covered in terms of the representative person. This integrated approach enables a systematic risk assessment for complex exposure situations of radioactive waste disposal and facilitates the evaluation of compliance with risk constraints.

  • In this paper a discussion is presented about excavation responses of underground openings for radioactive waste disposal. The effects of excavation methods, stress redistribution, thermal change, and backfill materials are reviewed. Comparisons of computational models for discontinuous reek masses and discussions on numerical simulation techniques for the excavation of underground openings are also described. Finally, the application of the CAD system to the planning, design and construction of underground openings fop radioactive waste disposal is introduced.

Concepts of heat dissipation of a disposal canister and its computational analysis

  • The stability of engineered barriers in high-level radioactive waste disposal systems can be influenced by the decay heat generated by the waste. This study focuses on the thermal analysis of various canister designs to effectively lower the maximum temperature of the engineered barrier. A numerical model was developed and employed to investigate the heat dissipation potential of copper rings placed across the buffer. Various canister designs incorporating copper rings were presented, and numerical analysis was performed to identify the design with the most significant temperature reduction effect. The results confirmed that the temperature of the buffer material was effectively lowered with an increase in the number of copper rings penetrating the buffer. Parametric studies were also conducted to analyze the impact of technical gaps, copper thickness, and collar height on the temperature reduction. The numerical model revealed that the presence of gaps between the components of the engineered barrier significantly increased the buffer temperature. Furthermore, the reduction in buffer temperature varied depending on the location of the gap and collar. The methods proposed in this study for reducing the buffer temperature hold promise for contributing to cost reduction in radioactive waste disposal.

Packing placement method using hybrid genetic algorithm for segments of waste components in nuclear reactor decommissioning

  • As Kori unit 1 is undergoing the decommissioning process, estimating the disposal amount of waste from the decommissioned nuclear reactor has become one of the challenging issues. Since the waste disposal amount estimation depends on the packing of the waste, it is highly desirable to optimize the waste packing plan. In this study, we developed an efficient scheme for packing waste component segments. The scheme consists of 1) preparing three-dimensional models of segments, 2) orienting each segment in such a way to minimize the bounding box volume, and 3) applying hybrid genetic algorithm to pack the segments in the disposal containers. When the packing solution converges in the algorithm, it comes up with the number of containers used and the placement of segments in each container. The scheme was applied to Kori-1 reactor pressure vessel. The required number of containers calculated by the developed scheme was 24 compared to 42 that was the estimation of the prior packing plan, resulting in disposal volume savings by more than 40%. The developed method is flexible for applications to various packing problems with waste segments from different cutting options and different sizes of containers.

혐오시설 유치지역주민의 보상에 대한 사회적 태도 (Social Attitudes toward Compensation of Local Communities Hosting Noxious Facilities)

  • This paper investigates the social attitudes toward compensation of local communities hosting noxious facilities. Using a contingent valuation survey, we find that respondents are more distrustful of government institutes and waste disposal firms than non-governmental organizations. Siting procedures for waste disposal facilities are thought to be unfair 10 general. We also find that social distrust influences the likelihood of voting yes in a referendum to compensate the hosting communities of waste disposal facilities. Individuals who are distrustful of government institutes and waste disposal firms exhibit positive attitudes for the compensation of hosting communities. The higher the level of compensation offered, the less likely to vote yes for compensation.

A Case Study on the Safety Assessment for Groundwater Pathway in a Near-Surface Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility

  • A safety assessment is carried out for the near-surface radioactive waste disposal in the reference engineered vault facility. The analysis is mainly divided into two parts. One deals with the release and transport of radionuclide in the vault and unsaturated zone. The other deals with the transport of radionuclide in the saturated zone and radiological impacts to a human group under well drinking water scenario. The parameters for source-term, geosphere and biosphere models are mainly obtained from the site specific data. The results show that the annual effective doses are dominated by long lived, mobile radionuclides and their associated daughters. And it is found that the total effective dose for drinking water is far below the general criteria of regulatory limit for radioactive waste disposal facility.

공동주택 건축공사의 공종별 폐기물의 종류와 발생원인 분석 (An Analysis of Classification and Causes for Construction Waste of Apartment Building Projects)

  • Each year the amount of construction wastes increases at a rapid pace. Particularly, wastes from apartment housing projects that make up 89.14% of the total construction projects have increased about 48% as compared with those of the year 2000. Construction wastes are therefore rising as an issue related to environmental problems and disposal costs. And there are ongoing studies of the disposal, control and recycling of construction wastes. Mitigation measures for the wastes, however, have been a rare subject of research that focuses on waste-generating factors by activity during apartment housing projects. Given that, the purpose of this study was to categorize construction wastes by work type and to identify the factors causing wastes in order to reduce them. This study investigated the amount of the wastes from apartment housing constructions by activity as related to disposal costs, and examined causes in the ordering, transport, material management and construction stage, respectively. The analysis results will likely bring about expectation effects that help reduce the generation of the wastes by establishing action plans.
