Triboelectrostatic Separation of PVC Materials from Mixed Plastics for Waste Plastic Recycling

  • Waste plastics amount is more than 3.5 million tons and 30% of industrial waste in 1998, Korea but recycling rate of industrial waste plastics is quite low because the material separation technology from the mixed waste plastic powders is not commercially available so far. This study covers the triboelectrostatic separation of polyvinylchloride (PVC) materials collection chambers and controllers. PVC and PET powders can be imparted negative and positive surface charges, respectively, due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. The extract content and yield of PVC separation from the mixed PVC and PET plastic powders are 90.0% and 98.2%, respectively. The electrostatic separation system using the fluidized bed tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC materials from other mixed plastics.

  • This study was conducted in order to remove Poly vinyl chloride(PVC) from the waste plastic film mixture. The fittings of Air Table was modified to increase the separation efficiency of PVC and PE(poly ethylene). PE and PVC was successfully separated from PVC-PE film mixture with the yield of PE 90% or more and with his grade of 99% or more, using the improved Air Table.   • Recycling of waste polyvinyl chloride plastics has attracted much attention due to environmental problems, but the poor mechanical properties, low thermal stability, frequent breakage of strands, and melt cracking of the waste plastics have limited their widespread use. To overcome these disadvantages of waste PVC (W-PVC), recycled PVC powder blend was prepared by adding high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as a heat stabilizer and compatibilizer, respectively. An intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder was used to prepare the blend, and the characteristics of the blend were analyzed by SEM and TGA, and by using a UTM and Izod impact tester. The impact strength was improved as the EVA content increased for the W-PVC/HDPE (80/20 wt%) blend. As the HDPE and EVA contents increased in the W-PVC/HDPE/EVA blend, the impact strength increased. SEM observations also revealed the improved interfacial adhesion for the EVA-containing blend.

Electrostatic Charging Measurement and PVC Separation of Triboeletrostatically Charged Plastic Particles using a Fluidized Bed Tribocharger

  • A particle flow visualization, electrostatic charging measurement and separation of triboelectrically charged particles in the external electric field by a fluidized bed tribocharger are conducted for the removal of PVC particles from mixed waste plastics. The laboratory-scale triboelectrostatic separation system consists of the fluidized bed tribocharger, a separation chamber, a collection chamber and a controller. PVC and PET particles can be imparted negative and positive surface charges respectively due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. To visualize these charged particles, He-Ne laser is used with cylindrical lenses to generate a sheet beam. In the charging measurement, the particle motion analysis system (PMAS), capable of determining particle velocity and diameter. is used to non-intrusively measure particle behavior in high strength electric field. The average charge-to-mass ratios of PVC and PET particles are $1.4\;and\;1.2{\mu}C/kg$, respectively. The highly concentrated PVC (91.9%) can be recovered with a yield of about 96.1% from the mixture of PVC and PET materials for a single-stage processing. The triboelectrostatic separation system using the fluidized tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC from mixed plastics for waste plastic recycling.

  • The effect of addition of gypsum on the rheology, physico-mechanical properties, thermal properties and morphology development of polymer composites based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and waste-gypsum with and without methylene-butadiene-styrene (MBS) has been studied. It was shown that the replacement of gypsum for methylene-butadiene-styrene (MBS) component in PVC/gypsum polymer composites enhanced the tensile strength and stiffness of composites, but gradually decreased its impact strength. The observation of morphology, the results of the physico-mechanical properties and thermal properties proved simultaneously that PVC/gypsum composite with the waste-gypsum content of 22.56 wt% reached the optimum results among five kinds of PVC/gypsum polymer composite materials investigated.

  • This study was conducted to find out the chlorine removal characteristics of waste plastic mixture by pyrolysis process with thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and a lab-scale pyrolyzer. The material used as plastic wastes were PE (Poly-ethylene), PP (Poly-prophylene), and PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). Experimental procedure were composed of three steps; 1st step: TGA of PVC, PP and PE, 2nd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC in a lab-scale pyrolyzer, 3rd step: chlorine removal rate of PVC-PE and PVC-PP mixture in a pyrolyzer. Through the results of TGA, we can estimate the basic pyrolysis characteristics of each plastic, and then we can also derive the design parameters and operating conditions of the lab-scale pyrolyzer. The results can be used as primary data for designing a system to produce RPF (Refuse Plastic Fuel), a waste incinerator and a pyrolysis/gasification process.

  • 2004년 이후 EPR 제도의 시행과 더불어 폐플라스틱을 함유한 물질의 소각과 매립을 법으로 규제함에 따라 폐플라스틱 재활용의 필요성이 가중되고 있다. 본 연구는 생활계 폐플라스틱 재활용을 위한 정전선별 기술의 개발을 목적으로, 하전물질과 하전장치를 개발하여 선별효율을 높이고자 하였다. 따라서 우리는 대상 플라스틱의 하전효율과 재질분리에 적합한 하전장치 및 마찰하전형정전선별기를 개발하여 2종 혼합 플라스틱으로부터 PVC를 $99\%$ 이상 제거하였으며, PET와 같이 PVC 함량을 규제하는 경우 최적 실험조건에서 PET 회수율 $80\%$로 PVC를 $99.99\%$ 까지 제거할 수 있는 기술도 개발하였다. 또한 3종 혼합 플라스틱은 $98\%$이상으로 분리하여 플라스틱의 재활용을 높일 수 있는 재질분리 기술을 확립하였다.

  • 폐 PVC전선의 열적분해 특성에 관한 연구를 TGA 및 고정층 반응기를 이용하여 연구하였다. 본 연구에서는 분해온도, 공기유량 및 CaO/ PVC의 비를 실험조건으로 고려하였으며, PVC전선의 열적분해과정에서 발생되는 염화수소 및 독성가스의 제거를 위한 CaO의 첨가에 대한 효과를 검증하기 위하여 PVC 전선의 열적분해 과정에서 생성되는 기상 생성물을 GC/MS를 이용하여 분석하였다. 또한 CaO의 첨가효과를 고찰하고자 액성 생성물에 대한 GC/MS을 함께 수행하였으며, 분해온도, 공기유량 및 CaO/PVC의 비에 따른 액상, 기상 및 고상 잔류물의 수율 변화를 함께 고찰하였다. 본 연구로부터 CaO의 첨가량이 증가할수록 PVC의 열적분해 과정에서 발생되는 염화수소의 제거량이 증가함을 확인하였다.
