  • Global warming affects terrestrial ecosystem productivity including photosynthesis and plant growth. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of experimental warming on chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rate of Quercus variabilis Blume seedlings. One-year-old Q. variabilis seedlings were planted in control and warmed plots in April 2010. The air temperature of warmed plots was increased by $3^{\circ}C$ compared to control plots using the infrared lamp from November 2010. Total chlorophyll contents were higher in warmed plots than those in control plots in May, July, August, September and October, 2012, however, the differences were statistically significant only in October. Net photosynthetic rates were also higher in warmed plots than those in control plots in May (57.0%), September (21.4%), and October (89.6%), however, the differences were significant only in May and October. Higher chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rate of warmed plots in spring and fall might be related to the extended growing season length.

  • In recent years, biochar has received much attention as soil amendment, enhancing soil fertility and reducing toxicity of heavy metals with its large specific surface area and high pH. Biochar has also the effect of alleviating global warming by carbon sequestration from recycling organic wastes by pyrolysis. However, scattering of fine particles of biochar is a hindrance to expand its use from human health point-of-view. Alginate, a natural polymer without toxicity, has been used for capsulation and hydrogel fabrication due to its cross-linking nature with calcium ion. In this study, the method of cross-linkage between alginate and calcium ion was employed for making dust-free biochar bead. Then an equilibrium adsorption experiment was performed for verifying the adsorption effect of biochar bead on heavy metals (cadmium, copper, lead, arsenic, and zinc). Results showed that biochar bead had effects on adsorbing heavy metals, especially lead, except arsenic.

  • The American ginseng is getting popular in the world market with cooling effects. This paper study history of the cooling effect of American ginseng. Most references include one's assertion on the cooling effect of American ginseng based on the old chinese believe. However, American ginseng was discovered in 1716 and export to China from mid 18 century. Concerning on the time period for clinical demonstration to get people's believe, it is not sufficient to conform the cooling effects of American ginseng. That is why the American ginseng was sold as an inferior goods compare oriental ginseng until mid 1970s. United State FDA also does not certify any effectiveness of Ginseng yet. However, it is important to study on the American ginseng because of rapid growth in the world ginseng market.

  • This article reviews R&D of triple effect cycle developed in Japan. Most of the refrigeration and heat pump technologies are dominated by vapor compressor system. The vapor compressor system, however, is highly concerned with the environmental regulations , as most of the vapor compressor technologies are using CFCs or HCFCs which are known as ozone depleting and global warming gases. As a consequence, refrigeration technologists are trying to invent or to develop an alternative to vapor compressor refrigeration devices. Thermally driven, absorption technology is one of the possible alternatives. At the moment, absorption cycle is most promising technology The paper summarizes briefly the current research and development in advanced technologies of triple effect absorption chiller-heater in Japan.(omitted)

  • These experiments were carried out to examine the effect of rapid thawing (500$^{\circ}C$/min) on the survival of 8-cell mouse embryos cooled slowly (0.5-1$^{\circ}C$/min) to precooling temperatures between -10 and 070$^{\circ}C$ before direct transfer ofembryos to -196$^{\circ}C$, and to compare the survival of embroys thawed slowly (20$^{\circ}C$/min) and rapidly (500$^{\circ}C$/min) after in vitro culture. In addition, the sensitivity of 8-cell mouse embroys to the rate of addition and removal of cryoprotectant at room temperauture, and the effect of developing stages on the survival of embryos frozen-thawed slowly were investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. Embryos were survived in rapid thawing (500$^{\circ}C$/min) only when slow cooling was terminated at relatively high subzero teperaure (-20 to -60$^{\circ}C$). The highest survival rate(77.0%) in in vitro culture of embryos thawed rapidly was obtaeined after transfer to -196$^{\circ}C$ from -40$^{\circ}C$. 2. For the survival of embryos in slow thawing (20$^{\circ}C$/min.), slow cooling to lower subzero temperature (-50$^{\circ}C$ and below) was required before transfer of embryos to -196$^{\circ}C$. These results indicate that embryos transferred to -196$^{\circ}C$ from high subzero temprature contain much interacellular ice to damage them during slow warming but to permit survival of embryos after rapid warming. 3. The Survival rate (72.7%) of 8-cell mouse embryos after rapid addition and removal of cryoprotectant, DMSO at room temperature was similar to that (83.9%) after slow addition and removal of cryoprotectant at same temperature. 4. The survival rates of 1-, 2-, 4- and 8-cell embryos frozen-thawed slowly were 26.7, 76.4, 70.0 and 83.9%, respectively.

  • As abnormal climate phenomena frequently happen due to the after-effect of the global warming, all nations suggest climate change response policies in many different fields to prevent global warming by reducing greenhouse gas. Especially, these days, the realization that the greenhouse gas from city buildings should be decreased is growing, and it is because that buildings are accounted for a quarter of national greenhouse gas emission and it is more than half the percentage of emissions within the city. Accordingly, Korean government sees the need to take an initiating role to fulfill low-carbon green policies and promotion strategies in the public sector, and wants to facilitate greenhouse gas reduction in the private sector as well. In this background, this study tries to examine the low-carbon planning element in public buildings and figure out the amount of carbon reduction and economic analysis centering Cheongju city as case study. Lastly, we propose some suggestion for low-carbon and greening of public buildings.

  • In response to global warming, the effect of the air temperature on water temperature has been noticed. The change in water temperature in river environment results in the change in water quality and ecosystem, especially Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level, and shifts in aquatic biota. Efforts need to be made to predict future water temperature in order to understand the timing of the projected river temperature. To do this, the data collected by the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Meteororlogical Administration has been used to build a nonlinear relationship between air and water temperature. The logistic function that includes four different parameters was selected as a working model and the parameters were optimized using SCE algorithm. Weekly average values were used to remove time scaling effect because the time scale affects maximum and minimum temperature and then river environment. Generally speaking nonlinear logistic model shows better performance in NSC and RMSE and nonlinear logistic function is recommendable to build a relationship between air and water temperature in Korea. The results will contribute to determine the future policy regarding water quality and ecosystem for the decision-driving organization.

  • This paper attempted to find implications for water resource management and water quality improvement by analyzing the causal relationship among discharge, water temperature and pollution index, which were expected to have a great effect on water quality with the rise of water temperature and precipitation change as the warming effect in recent years. For this purpose, the unit root test, cointegration test, and Granger causal test were carried out for 10 multi-purpose dams in Korean major water systems using time series data on discharge, water temperature, BOD, COD and DO. It was analyzed that the fluctuation of water temperature affected the pollution index more than the fluctuation of discharge volume. Also, Hapcheon dam and Chungju dam were the best water quality management dams based on the high causal relationship between water quality and discharge. The second rank was Daecheong dam. The third-ranking group were Yongdam and Andong dam, whose causal relationships between water quality and discharge were low. The last group were the remaining five dams.

  • Recent decades have seen all over the world increasing drought in some regions and increasing flood in others. Climate change has been alarming in many regions resulting in degradation and diminution of available freshwater. The effect of global warming and overpopulation associated with increasing irrigated farming and valuable agricultural lands could be particularly disastrous for coastal areas like the one of Benin. The coastal region of Benin is under a heavy demographic pressure and was in the last decades the object of important urban developments. The present study aims to roughly study the general effect of climate change (Sea Level Rise: SLR) and groundwater pumping on Seawater intrusion (SWI) in Benin's coastal region. To reach the main goal of our study, the region aquifer system was built in numerical model using SEAWAT engine from Visual MODFLOW. The model is built and calibrated from 2016 to 2020 in SEAWAT, and using WinPEST the model parameters were optimized for a better performance. The optimized parameters are used for seawater intrusion intensity evaluation in the coastal region of Benin The simulation of the hydraulic head in the calibration period, showed groundwater head drawdown across the area with an average of 1.92m which is observed on the field by groundwater level depletion in hand dug wells mainly in the south of the study area. SWI area increased with a difference of 2.59km2 between the start and end time of the modeling period. By considering SLR due to global warming, the model was stimulated to predict SWI area in 2050. IPCC scenario IS92a simulated SLR in the coastal region of Benin and the average rise is estimated at 20cm by 2050. Using the average rise, the model is run for SWI area estimation in 2050. SWI area in 2050 increased by an average of 10.34% (21.04 km2); this is expected to keep increasing as population grows and SLR.
