  • PURPOSES : This study evaluated the field applicability and laboratory performance of warm-mix asphalt (WMA) as an alternative technology in asphalt pavement. METHODS : The pilot road using two different types of WMA mixture and one HMA mixture was constructed in Waegwan-Seokjeok road construction site and the mixtures were sampled at the asphalt plant for laboratory testings. The field applicability was assessed in environmental aspects, such as $CO_2$ emission, and in aspects of constructibility using the existing equipment and procedure, i.e., thickness and density measurement. The laboratory testings included the moisture susceptibility test by AASHTO T283, dynamic modulus test, triaxial repeated load permanent deformation test, and the fatigue test. RESULTS : The temperatures for production and compaction of WMA were $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ lower than those for HMA and therefore, the noxious gas emission were significantly reduced. The field density of WMA pavements was similar or better than that of HMA pavement. From the laboratory testings, it was found that WMA mixtures exhibit comparable performance to HMA mixture in moisture susceptibility, permanent deformation, and fatigue performance. CONCLUSIONS : With these results, it would be concluded that WMA could replace the existing HMA technology without any significant issue. To support this conclusion, it is necessary to track the long-term performance of WMA in pilot road.

  • PURPOSES : The study objective was to evaluate rheology and physical properties of SBS-modified warm-mix asphalt (WMA) binders in comparison with hot-mix asphalt (HMA) binders. METHODS : Four different SBS polymers were used to prepare polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, and three different warm-mix additives (WAD) were used to prepare a total of 12 WMA PMA binders. The kinematic viscosity was measured at 115, $135^{\circ}C$. The PG was determined using DSR and BBR. The pass/fail (P/F) temperatures for high and low PG grading were evaluated for HMA PMA and WMA PMA binders. RESULTS : PG 76-22 binders could be prepared by modifying the base binder (PG 64-22) using 4.5 wt% of SBS. The kinematic viscosity (KV) of SBS PMA was increased by 3 times higher than that of base asphalt. The SBS PMA with WAD showed 10% lower KV than that of the normal SBS PMA at $115^{\circ}C$ The high P/F temperatures showed almost no difference between HMA PMA and WMA PMA binders. The high P/F temperature showed very high correlations with KV ($R^2$ > 0.97). The result of SBS modification caused increase of low P/F temperature by $2.7^{\circ}C$ on average. CONCLUSIONS : Since the PMA with WAD showed 10% lower KV than normal (HMA) PMA at $115^{\circ}C$, reducing PMA mixture temperature down to a WMA level was possible in this study. The higher KV binders showed the higher P/F temperature. There was almost no change in high P/F temperature due to the use of WAD. The SBS PMA, showing an increased low P/F temperature, might show somewhat poorer performance at low-temperature, even though the lower PG grade was staying at the same level, i.e., $-22^{\circ}C$.

  • The public interest of global warming and energy shortage is gradually increased, and the related industries also have become interested in developing eco-friendly material and technology. Warm-mix asphalt (WMA) is a result of the developments to alleviate global warming and energy problems. This WMA is produced at lower temperatures than the temperature at which hot mix asphalt (HMA) is produced. Because most tests in Superpave are developed only for the performance and maintenance of HMA produced by hot temperatures, it is difficult for the tests to identify properly the material properties and then evaluate the performances between HMA and WMA. This study deals with the development of a new protocol to differentiate HMA and WMA performance, and especially the interfacial properties between asphalt and aggregate are targeted as the performance indicator; thus, an evaluation method and guideline are suggested. The concept and idea of the test method applied in this study were modified from the DSR moisture damage test protocol. In addition, TSR test was performed to affirm the relation between the asphalt-aggregate interface and the asphalt-aggregate mixture performances. The followings are the results of this study. Shear stress at 85% linear visco-elastic complex modulus (LVE $G^*$) can be a better parameter than LVE $G^*$, which can assess the interfacial or bonding performance between asphalt and aggregate. Moreover, measuring the bonding performance in thinner film thicknesses will be a better way to evaluate the real and field situation between asphalt and aggregate. The interfacial properties' criteria to apply the newly developed test and parameter should be developed, after the asphalt mixture criteria relating to the interfacial properties are completed.

  • PURPOSES: This research is to evaluate the mechanical performance of different types of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement cells prepared for MN/Road field testing section through an extensive experimental analysis of air voids and simple statistical evaluation tools (i.e. hypothesis test). METHODS: An extensive experimental work was performed to measure air voids in 82 asphalt mixture cores (238 samples in total) obtained from nine different types of road cell located in MN/Road testing field. In order to numerically and quantitatively address the differences in air voids among the different test Cells built in MN/Road, a simple statistical test method (i.e. t-test) with 5% significance was used. RESULTS: Similar trends in air voids content were found among the mixtures including conventional HMA, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) combined with taconite aggregate this provides support to the use of RAP and WMA technology in the constructions of asphalt pavement. However, in case of acid modified HMA mixtures, significant differences in air void content were observed between on the wheel path and between wheel path location, which implies negative performances in rutting and thermal cracking resistances. Conclusions : It can be concluded that use of RAP and WMA technology in the construction of conventional asphalt pavement and the use of PPA (Poly Phosphoric Acid) in combinations with SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) in asphalt binder production provide satisfactory performance and, therefore, are highly recommended.

  • Warm-mix asphalt(WMA) technology has been developed to allow asphalt mixtures to be produced and compacted at a significantly lower temperature. The WMA technology was identified as one of means to lower emissions for $CO_2$ and has been spread so quickly in the world. Recently, two innovative WMA additives has been developed to reduce mixing and paving temperatures applied in asphalt paving process in Korea. Since the first public demonstration project in 2008, many WMA projects have successfully been constructed in national highways. In 2010, the WMA field trial was conducted on new national highway construction under Dae-Jeon Regional Construction Management Administration. The two different WMA loose mixtures(WMA and WMA-P) and a HMA mixture were collected at the asphalt plant to evaluate their mechanical performance in the laboratory. The Third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator(MMLS3) was adopted to evaluate rutting resistance and moisture damage under different traffic and environmental conditions. In this study, plant-produced WMA mixtures using two WMA additives along with the conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) mixtures were evaluated with respect to their rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility using MMLS3. Based on the limited laboratory test results, plant-produced WMA mixtures are superior to HMA mixtures in rutting resistance and the moisture susceptibility. The WMA additive was effective for producing and compacting the mixture at $30^{\circ}C$ lower than the temperature for the HMA mixture.

  • The objective of this study is to validate the number of gyrations of Superpave gyratory compactor(SGC) for compaction of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and warm-mix asphalt(WMA) mixtures. Marshall compaction was also used for comparison purpose. The 13mm and 19mm aggregates of 1st class quality shape were used. A PG64-22 and a PG76-22 for HMA and a PG70-22 for WMA. Four compaction temperatures based on the suggested value were used for each binder using 100 gyrations for SGC and 75 blows per side for Marshall compactor. It was found that SGC compaction was somewhat better than Marshall compaction. The analysis of variance showed that two compactors were significantly different in air voids of 19mm mixtures at ${\alpha}=0.05$ level. The 13mm mixture did not show a significant statistical difference. When compacted at the temperature below a certain level, however, the compaction of two compactors were fond to be proor. Therefore, observing compaction temperature above the minimum level is important to secure proper compaction work. If the minimum temperatures were maintained, 100 gyrations, which was given for HMA of arterial road pavement by the Korean Guide, was found to be appropriate compaction, showing similar or better compaction work than 75 blows per side of Marshall compaction.

  • As an increase in the amount of RAP, there are growing interests in recycling asphalt concrete. In case of using the RAP as recycled asphalt pavement, it tends to be quality deteriorate. Therefore, the amount of RAP using is advised to be limited or has to be used with rejuvenator. In this study, asphalt mixture containing WMRA was analyzed to be used up to 50% for the sake of convenience on the process. As the results of evaluation, there was no significant difference in case of using 30% of RAP in the test of Marshall stability. However, in case of WMRA using up to 50%, it was satisfied criteria by flow value at 34.7. Further, result of toughness test was found that the crack resistance showed 55% higher than using straight asphalt when using WMRA binder up to 50%. According to the results of directly comparing crack resistance through repeated direct tensile test, it was shown that the fatigue crack resistance of WMRA pavement was increased by 263%. Therefore, it was shown that WMRA binder was effective in recycling RAP because WMRA binder could increase the percentage of RAP using up to 50%.
