  • Thin-walled mental tubes under lateral crushing are desirable and reliable energy absorbers against impact or blast loads. However, the early formations of plastic hinges in the thin cylindrical wall limit the energy absorption performance. This study investigates the energy absorption performance of a simple, light and efficient energy absorber called the ring stiffened tube. Due to the increase of section modulus of tube wall and the restraining effect of the T-stiffener flange, key energy absorption parameters (peak crushing force, energy absorption and specific energy absorption) have been significantly improved against the empty tube. Its potential application in the offshore blast wall design has also been investigated. It is proposed to replace the blast wall endplates at the supports with the energy absorption devices that are made up of the ring stiffened tubes and springs. An analytical model based on beam vibration theory and virtual work theory, in which the boundary conditions at each support are simplified as a translational spring and a rotational spring, has been developed to evaluate the blast mitigation effect of the proposed design scheme. Finite element method has been applied to validate the analytical model. Comparisons of key design criterions such as panel deflection and energy absorption against the traditional design demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design in blast alleviation.

  • Although the wall tile, which is the finishing material, has been used in many parts of the living space, there has been no attention to the process of research, production and marketing. Owing to the elevation of living tastes and the betterment of housing is causing a lot of interest and care about the finishing material in the inner part of housing, the interest on the wall tile has been remarkably increased. Even to the designers who are specializing in design, the wall tile industrial field has considered as only a ceramics, therefore it has not been indifferent to. With the background of the above, being conducted researches for causing interest and understanding in the wall tile industries with the various approach focusing on the importance of design, the desirable roles and direction of design in the \vall the tile field, this study shows the development and desirable future of the wall tile industries in our country.

  • In case of soil nailing system, there have been many attempts to expand into slope and temporary earth retaining system stabilization method since the first ground excavation earth retaining system construction in 1993. Recently, jointing wall, underground wall of buildings and excavation earth retaining wall, construction were increasingly applied for effective utilization of the limited underground space and land application maximized. However, the application of joining wall into retaining wall or building by temporary soil nailing system and design of permanent wall were performed by using Rankine earth pressure theory without considering the distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing. In this study was performed to introduce the design case by 'Two-Body Translation mechanism (TBTM)' to be able to consider distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing when designing the permanent jointing wall using soil nailing system for effective utilization of ground space. Also, this study attempts to evaluate the earth pressure change, decreasing effect of wall displacement and increasing effect of stability when advanced soil nailing system is constructed using $FLAC^{2D}$ ${\nu}er.$ 3.30 program and 'Two-Body Translation mechanism'.

  • This paper reviews many of the design considerations surrounding the topic of tiedback landslide suppressor walls primarily for soils app1ications. The design requires combining knowledge of many aspects of soil mechanics and geology to obtain a design a wall that fits site specific conditions. Many of the aspects necessary to complete the design are stil1 not comprehensively studied or understood. This paper provides an overview of the more traditional aspects of tieback wall design and a discussion of newer issues such as suppressor wall earth pressures and rotation of stresses due to tiebacks. An overview is also provided regarding the effect of seismic forces.

  • The regulations to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission in building sectors are being developed and promoted all over the world. However, in Korea, as balcony extension of the apartments has been legally allowed, it became prevalent and resulted in excessive energy consumption. This study derived the possibility of PCM application to the thermal storage wall system through theoretical consideration and investigated the problems occurring when the balcony space has been extended to the diverted space. In addition, this study aims at the possibility of verifying the installation and confirming the cooling energy reduction effect, by conducting measuring tests with the actual installation of PCM applied thermal storage wall system. As a result of theoretical consideration, it is determined that the disadvantages with the existing thermal storage wall system can be complemented by applying PCM, and this study suggests the PCM applied Thermal Storage Wall System. The study was conducted on 1/6 of a miniature inner room of a domestic apartment with 84 $m^2$ of exclusive area. From the results of actual measurements, it is confirmed that the balcony extension structure can gain 11.3% of more calories than the existing balcony structure, resulting in the increase in cooling energy usage. It is determined that the installation of the PCM applied Thermal Storage Wall System may gain 25.2% of less calories to reduce cooling energy usage.

  • The several computer programs for the design of soil nailed wall are often used in Korea. However, these programs have been used without any practical justification. Therefore, in order to evaluate the applicability of these programs for the design of soil nailing, these computer results were analyzed and compared with one another. The performance evaluations by the available programs, such as SNAILZ, TALREN97, SLOPE/W, STABL6, and NAILM16, were applied and the applied data were from 5 case history(15 section). The estimated factors of safety with available programs were compared with observed horizontal deformation from the field. The results showed that the program SNAILZ is most adequate tool for the design of soil nailed wall.

  • Ultra High Performance Cementitious Composites with compressive strength 200MPa (UHPCC-200) is proposed for the structural design of super high hybrid wind turbine tower to gain durability, ductility and high strength design objectives. The minimal wall thickness is analyzed using basic bending and compression theory and is modified by a toque influence coefficient. Two cases of wall thickness combination of middle and bottom segment including varied ratio and constant ratio are considered within typical wall thickness dimension. Using nonlinear finite element analysis, the effects of wall thickness combinations with varied and constant ratio and prestress on the structural stress and lateral displacement are calculated and analyzed. The design limitation of the segmental wall thickness combinations is recommended.

  • This paper presents a case history of a geosynthetics-reinforced segmental retaining wall, which collapsed during a sever rainfall immediately after the completion of the wall construction. In an attempt to identify possible causes for the collapse, a comprehensive investigation was carried out including physical and strength tests on the backfill, stability analyses on the as-built design based on the current design approaches, and slope stability analyses with pore pressure consideration. The investigation revealed that the inappropriate as-built design and the bad-quality backfill were mainly responsible for the collapse. This paper describes the site condition including wall design, details of the results of investigation and finally, lessons learned. Practical significance of the findings from this study is also discussed.
