  • This study compared fin-tube and parallel-flow heat pipes for their sensible heat exchange rate, heat recovery amount, and air-side pressure drop. Tests were done with different refrigerant charging rates of 40-60% vol. and air flow rates of 300-1,400. The sensible heat exchange rate was highest for both types of heat pipes at a working fluid charge of 40% vol. and low flow rate. For the parallel-flow heat pipe, the 60% vol. charge is too high and results in a low sensible heat exchange rate. The reason is that the thicker liquid film of the tube wall deteriorates the heat transfer effect. Hence, the optimal charging rate is 40 to 50% vol. The evaporator heat pipe has a larger air-side pressure drop than the condenser section heat pipe. The reason is considered to be condensation water arising from the evaporator surface. Compared to the fin-tube heat pipe, the parallel-flow heat pipe showed better performance with a working fluid charging rate of 48%, volume of 41%, and an air-side pressure drop about 37%.

  • To estimate the effects of environmental noise on inhabitants' life in an apartment area at Taejon, noise levels and traffic volume of major roads were measured. 203 housewives were surveyed by questionaires including general factors, noise related factors and three items of life effects: subjective evaluations on the general environment, annoyance, and life disturbance due to environmental noise. At the boundary adjacent to the road with more traffic volume, noise level was higher; according to the time, the amount of noise level was in the morning, in the evening, at noon, and at night in order. Most of boundary noise levels were higher than those of recommended standard environmental noise levels in a residential area. The boundary noise level showed a very significant linear relationship with traffic volume of near roads. Noise level difference in the apartments adjacent to three roads was ranged 2.4~6.7dB between in windows open and close state. The apartments adjacent to 9 lane or 6 lane-road, which were protected by noise prevention wall and 20m or more distance from the roads, showed higher noise level at middle floors and high floors than those of low floors; but the buildings adjacent to 4 lane-road, with no protection, showed higher noise level at low and middle floors than those of high floors. Among 203 housewives, 120(59.1%) participated in this study, and 86(73.2%) of them answered that the most serious environmental noise was traffic noise from near roads. Comparing traffic noise levels with those of before-migration, 67.0% participants found the environmental noise became louder. Fifty eight(49.5%) of the participants wanted noise protection wall and 15(25.9%) of them were willing to charge the fee. Less perception on the present noise comparing to those before-migration, less traffic volume, and lower noise levels in the apartments were related to higher scores of self-evaluation on the environment. Higher susceptibility on the present noise, areas with more traffic volume, higher boundary noise levels, and higher noise levels showed higher scores of annoyance on environmental noise and life disturbance. Considering above all things, it was suggested that traffic noise in this area was the major problem of environmental noise, and its' effect was so serious that inhabitants needed some preventive measures for better life quality.

  • MWCNT(multi-wall carbon nanotube)-doped PEDOT:PSS(poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)), used as a HIL(hole injection layer) material in OLEDs(organic light emitting diodes), was spin-coated on to the ITO glass to form PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT nano composite thin film. Morphology and transparency characteristics of nano composite thin films with respect to the loading percent of MWCNT have been investigated using FT-IR, UV-Vis and SEM. Furthermore, ITO/PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT/NPD/$Alq_3$/Al devices were fabricated, and then J-V and L-V characteristics were investigated. Functional group-incorporated MWCNT was prepared by acid treatment and showed good dispersion property in PEDOT:PSS solution. PEDOT:PSS-MWCNT thin films possessed good transparency property. For multi-layered devices, it was shown that as the loading percent of MWCNT increased, the current density increased but the luminance dramatically decreased. It might be conclusively suggested that the enhanced charge mobility by MWCNT could increase the current density but the hole trapping property of MWCNT could dramatically decrease the hole mobility in the current devices.

  • The outer tank of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank is a longitudinally and meridionally pre-stressed concrete (PSC) wall structure. Because of the current trend of constructing larger LNG storage tanks, the pre-stressing forces required to increase wall strength must be significantly increased. Because of the increase in tank sizes and pre-stressing forces, an extreme loading scenario such as a bomb blast or an airplane crash needs to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, the blast resistance performance of LNG storage tanks was analyzed by conducting a blast simulation to investigate the safety of larger LNG storage tanks. Test data validation for a blast simulation of reinforced concrete panels was performed using a specific FEM code, LS-DYNA, prior to a full-scale blast simulation of the outer tank of a 270,000-kL LNG storage tank. Another objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and serviceability of an LNG storage tank with respect to varying amounts of explosive charge. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the design and safety evaluation of PSC LNG storage tanks.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the general patterns of the floor plans and space of Usonian house which designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. this thesis can be summarized as follows : 1) F.L.Wright's houses mostly used simple geometric shapes as the basis for most of his architectural designs. In his early works, his typical floor plans were square or rectangular shapes, which gradually were transformed into various kinds of shape to make the adjustment of location of the site and shape. 2) The general patterns of floor plans of his U-houses were L-shaped or straight shaped using a $4{\times}4$ grid system. Most of U-houses consisted of 3 space: living room, workspace(Kitchen) & dining, and bedroom. Among them, a workspace worked as core role in each house. 3) Even though solid wall is the opposite concept of the transparent glass but most U-houses were designed to have solid walls on one side to provide a gallery space(to secure habitability of resident) and transparent glass walls used on the other side to connect between interior space and natural space of exterior. 4) The cantilever have not been used before Usonian house but F.L.Wright used it which take charge of functions as transfer space between inside space and outside space. 5) F.L.Wright saw the nature as a truth, so he thought the interior space would be natural and all houses must be able to adjust to the natural environment.

  • Light-weight conductive polymer composites were prepared by incorporating polyheterocycles such as polypyrrole and polythiophene into pores of a highly porous cross-linked polystyrene, host polymer, to form a conductive network. The highly hydrophobic and porous host polymer was synthesized by concentrated emulsion polymerization method. Polypyrrole-based composites, prepared by employing ferric chloride-methanol system, showed a conductivity as high as 0.82 S/cm. Conductivity of polythiophene-based composites, prepared from ferric chloride-acetonitrile system, was 6.05 S/cm. Conductivity of compositivity was influenced by the initial molar ratio of oxidant to monomer as well. SEM micrographs of the composites showed that conducting polymer coated uniformly the inside wall of the porous host polymer. Shielding effectiveness of the polypyrrole-based composites and of the polythiophene-based composites were 15.2 dB and 22.5 dB at 2.0 GHz, respectively. In the temperature range from 20 to 300K, a polypyrrole impregnated composite exhibited seimiconducting behavior and followed the variable range hopping(VRH) model for charge transport.

  • We had designed and made the cylindrical ionization chamber which operated above 5 mR/h. Using commercial electrometer, we investigated the characterictic of charge collection in the ion chamber. The active volume was 190.4㎤ and overall length and diameter in the chamber was 15.5cm, 5.22cm, respectively. The chamber had three electrodes(inner, central, wall electrode). And background current was 8.39${\times}$10$\^$-14/${\pm}$1.5${\times}$10$\^$-15/A to arrange the electrodes which were coaxial in chamber axis. The collection efficiency of chamber for Cs$\^$137/ was 99.7% when the opreating voltage was applied 400V. Comparing with the commertial dosimetry system, the exposure calibration constant was 4.531${\times}$19$\^$7/R/C. By normalizing to CS$\_$137/ the relative energy response of the chamber was 1.30 for Am$\_$24/, 1.05 for C0$\_$60/, respectively. When the irrarition tranversed to the chamber axis, the isotropic effect of the chamber was not considerable.

  • The isothermal characteristics of a rectangular parallelepiped sodium heat pipe were investigated for high-temperature applications. The heat pipes was made of stainless steel of which the dimension was $140\;m\;(L)\;{\times}\;95m\;(W)\;{\times}\;46 m\;(H)$ and the thickness of the container was 5 mm. Both inner surfaces of evaporator and condenser were covered with screen meshes to help spread the liquid state working fluid. To provide additional path for the working fluid, a lattice structure covered with screen mesh wick was inserted in the heat pipe. The bottom surface of the heat pipe was heated by an electric heater and the top surface was cooled by circulating coolant. The concern in this study was to enhance the temperature uniformity at the bottom surface of the heat pipe while an uneven heat source up to 900 W was in contact. The temperature distribution over the bottom surface was monitored at more than twenty six locations. It was found that the operating performance of the sodium heat pipe was critically affected by the inner wall temperature of the condenser region where the working fluid may be changed to a solid phase unless the temperature was higher than its melting point. The maximum temperature difference across the bottom surface was observed to be $114^{\circ}C$ for 850 W thermal load and $100^{\circ}C$ coolant inlet temperature. The effects of fill charge ratio, coolant inlet temperature and operating temperature on thermal performance of heat pipe were analyzed and discussed.

  • Plasma displays (PDP) as a large area wall-hanging display device are rabidly developed with flat CRT, TPT LCD and etc. Especially, AC Plasma Display Panels(AC PDPs) have the inherent memory function which is effective for large area displays. The memory function in AC PDPs is caused by the accumulation of the electrical charge on the protecting layer formed on the dielectric layer. This MgO protective layer prevents the dielectric layer from sputtering by ion in discharge plasma and also has the additional important roll in lowering the firing voltage due to the large secondary electron emission coefficient). Until now, the MgO Protective layer is mainly formed by E-Beam evaporation. With increasing the panel size, this process is difficult to attain cost reduction, and are not suitable for large quantity of production. To the contrary, the methode of shuttering are easy to apply on mass production and to enlarge the size of the panel and shows the superior adhesion and uniformity of thin film. In this study, we have prepared MgO protective layer on AC PDP Cell by reactive magnetron sputtering and studied the effect of MgO layer on the surface discharge characteristics of ac PDP.
