Experimental investigations of the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement in a channel with a built-in circular cylinder and a wing-let type vortex generator are presented. Without any vortex generators, relatively low heat transfer takes place in the downstream of the circular cylinder where is a recirculation region with low velocity fluid is formed. However with a wing-let type longitudinal vortex generator in the wake region behind the cylinder, heat transfer in the region can be enhanced. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from $20^{circ} to 45^{\circ}$, but spacings between the vortex generations are fixed to be 5 mm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity field downstream of the vortex generator is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the experimental cases($\beta=20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). Circulation strength and heat transfer coefficient have the maximum values when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$.
The interaction between the hypersonic free stream and the side jet flow at high altitudes is investigated by direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. Since there is a great difference in density between the free stream and the side jet flow, the weighting factor technique which could control the number of simulation particles, is applied to calculate these two flows simultaneously. Chemical reactions are not considered in the calculation. For validation, the corner flow passing between a pair of plates that are perpendicularly attached is solved. The side jet flow is then injected into this comer flow and solution is found for the merged flow. Results are compared with the experiments. For a more realistic rocket model, the flow past a blunted cone cylinder shape is solved. The leeward or windward jet injection is merged with this flow. The effect on the rocket surface is observed at various flow angles. The lambda effect and the wake structure are found like low attitudes. High interaction between the free stream and the side jet flow is observed when the side jet is injected in the windward direction.
This work investigates Reynolds number Re (= 50 - 200) effects on the flows around a single cylinder and the two tandem (center-to-center spacing L⁎= L/D = 4) cylinders, each of a diameter D. Vorticity structures, Strouhal numbers, and time-mean and fluctuating forces are presented and discussed. For the single cylinder, with increasing Re in the range examined, the vorticity magnitude, Strouhal number and fluctuating lift all monotonically rise but time-mean drag, vortex formation length, and lateral distance between the two rows of vortices all shrink. For the two tandem cylinders, the increase in Re leads to the formation of three distinct flows, namely reattachment flow (50 ≤ Re ≤ 75), transition flow (75 < Re < 100), and coshedding flow (100 ≤ Re ≤ 200). The reattachment flow at Re = 50 is steady. When Re is increased from 75 to 200, the Strouhal number of the two cylinders, jumping from 0.113 to 0.15 in the transition flow regime, swells to 0.188. The two-cylinder flow is more sensitive to Re than the single cylinder flow. Fluctuating lift is greater for the downstream cylinder than the upstream cylinder while time-mean drag is higher for the upstream cylinder than for the other. The time-mean drags of the upstream cylinder and single cylinder behaves similar to each other, both declining with increasing Re.
In the performance test for wind turbines of medium and large, The reference met-mast should be installed for measurement reference wind speed as IEC 61400-12-1 standards and design of booms for mounted an anemometer must be considered exactly. Boom-mounted cup anemometer are influenced by flow distortion of the mast and the boom. Therefore design of booms must be important so that flow distortion due to booms should be kept below 0.5%. But, in some cases at size of met-mast structure, the distance of boom from mast is longer then measurement of wind speed is impossible because of oscillation of boom-mounted anemometer. In this paper, We measured a wind speed at several point from mast and boom and we analyzed the error of wind speed at each point of measurement. Also, we will suggest a correction method using the data curve fitting about errors of wind speed between each point of mounted anemometer.

In industrial field, there are several operations where a horizontal unidirectional airflow is used to control airborne contaminants. When a worker is immersed in a uniform freestream, a recirculating airflow can be created downstream of the worker by the phenomenon of boundary layer seperation. If the contaminant source and the breathing zone are within this near-wake region, high exposure may occur. The investigation for the effect of contaminant source location on worker exposure was performed by using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The airflow field was numerically calculated by assuming a steady flow and using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. As the results were compared with experimental data, the applicability of CFD was successfully verified. Subsequently, the breathing zone concentrations of the worker were predicted and compared with experimental data. The effects of contaminant density and turbulence intensity of freestream on worker exposure were evaluated.
Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite containing equiaxed grains and Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite containing elongated grains were fabricated using Al2O3-Y2O3 composition and Al2O3-La2O3 composition, respectively, by hot-pressing. In order to investigate the influence of microstructural control of second phase on toughening effect of toughened ceramic composites, AE (acoustic emission) measurements have been coupled with fracture toughness experiments(SENB and SEPB method). A separation of the fracture toughness and analysis of toughening mechanism was possible using the AE technique. The fracture toughness of hot-pressed materials was estimated to be 3.2 MPam0.5 for monolithic alumina, 4.7 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite and 6.2 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite. In monolithic Al2O3, toughening does not occur as a result of either microcracking or grain bridging, whereas, composites exhibit toughening effects by both microcracking in the frontal zone and gain bridging in the wake zone, resulting in an improvement of fracture toughness as compared with monolithic Al2O3. The fracture toughness of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite is higher than that of Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite. It may be attributed to the elongated microstructure of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite, resulting relatively greater bridging effect.
The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167D, 0.05D and 0.067D with pitches of PPD=1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of $Re_D=7.8{\times}10^3{\sim}1.2{\times}10^5$. At $Re_D=1.2{\times}10^5$, the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.

The nacelle anemometer mounted behind the blade roots of a wind turbine measures distorted wind speed comparable with free-stream wind because of the wake effects caused dependent upon the operation of the wind turbine and the rotation of its blades. The field campaign was carried out to measure free-stream wind speed at a height identical to the height of the nacelle anemometer by deploying a ground-based remote-sensing equipment, LIDAR. It is derived that a third-order polynomial equation for correcting wind speed measured by the nacelle anemometer to undistorted free-stream wind speed incident to a wind turbine. It is anticipated that the derived correction equation enables wind speed measured by the nacelle anemometer to be used as a precise input for a wind turbine performance test and for developing an active control logic.
For the Palestinians, what is the impact of the Arab Spring? The revolution not only dislodged Mubarak from the presidency, but also changed Egyptian policy regarding Palestinians in Gaza. New Egyptian diplomacy has encouraged Hamas and Fatah, which had been in dispute, to seek reconciliation and has loosened the border control on humanitarian grounds. We focus on Palestinian voting attitudes in the wake of the Arab Spring. Despite the vast quantity of literature written about Palestinian politics since the first decade of the millennium, we know little about the determinants of Palestinian attitudes toward the divided governments in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Fatah government, in the West Bank, increased in popularity after submitting a request for UN recognition of Palestinian statehood. In Gaza, the Hamas government lost popularity because of mismanagement but won support through the success of its prisoner swap deal with Israel. However, evaluation of the ruling party does not depend only on one-time events. This research attempts to measure the impact of policy change in Gaza after the Arab Spring. We provide an account of our research on Palestinian attitudes toward the divided governments based on two sets of the original survey data conducted in May 2009 and June 2012. The paper sheds light on Palestinian attitudes and makes clear the effects of "democratization" in the Middle East and the effects of regional context factors on the occupied Palestinians.

The flow through a centrifugal compressor rotor was calculated using the quasi-3-dimensional and fully 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution methods. The calculated results, obtained during the development of the computer codes for both methods are discussed. In the inviscid quasi 3-dimensional analysis, stream function formulation was used for the blade to blade (B-B) plane calculations, and the streamline curvature method was used for the meridional (H-S) plane calculations. In the viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis, a control volume method based on a general rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. The quasi-3-dimensional analysis reasonably predicts the pressure distributions and requires much less computation time in the region where viscous effects are not strong; however, it fails to predict velocity field and loss mechanism through the impeller passage. The viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis shows reasonable pressure distributions and typical jet-wake flow field through the impeller passage. Secondary flow and total pressure distributions on cross-sectional planes explain the loss mechanisms through the impeller.
