The crashworthiness of vehicles with finite element methods depends on the geometry modeling and the material properties. The vehicle body structures are generally composed of various members such as frames, stamped panels and deep-drawn parts from sheet metals. In order to ensure the impact characteristics of auto-body structures, the dynamic behavior of sheet metals must be examined to provide the appropriate constitutive relation. In this paper, high strain-rate tensile tests have been carried out with a tension type split Hopkinson bar apparatus specially designed for sheet metals. Experimental results from both static and dynamic tests with the tension split Hopkinson bar apparatus are interpolated to construct the Johnson-Cook and a modified Johnson-Cook equation as the constitutive relation, that should be applied to simulation of the dynamic behavior of auto-body structures. Simulation of auto-body structures has been carried out with an elasto-plastic finite element method with explicit time integration. The stress integration scheme with the plastic predictor-elastic corrector method is adopted in order to accurately keep track of the stress-strain relation for the rate-dependent model accurately. The crashworthiness of the structure with quasi-static constitutive relation is compared to the one with the rate-dependent constitutive model. Numerical simulation has been carried out for frontal frames and a hood of an automobile. Deformed shapes and the Impact energy absorption of the structure are investigated with the variation of the strain rate.
Existing reinforced concrete (RC) beams can be strengthened with externally bolted steel plates to the sides of beams. The effectiveness of this type of bolted side-plate (BSP) beam can however be affected by partial interaction between the steel plates and RC beams due to the mechanical slip of bolts. To avoid over-estimation of the flexural strength and ensure accurate prediction of the load-deformation response of the beams, the effect of partial interaction has to be properly considered. In this paper, a special non-linear macro-finite-element model that takes into account the effects of partial interaction is proposed. The RC beam and the steel plates are modelled as two different elements, interacting through discrete groups of bolts. A layered method is adopted for the formulation of the RC beam and steel plate elements, while a special non-linear model based on a kinematic hardening assumption for the bolts is used to simulate the bolt group effect. The computer program SiBAN was developed based on the proposed approach. Comparison with the available experimental results shows that SiBAN can accurately predict the partial interaction behaviour of the BSP beams. Further numerical simulations show that the interaction between the RC beam and the steel plates is greatly reduced by the formation of plastic hinges and should be considered in analyses of the strengthened beams.
Since low-rise residential buildings are the most common and vulnerable structures in coastal areas, a reliable prediction of their performance under hurricanes is necessary. The present study focuses on developing a refined finite element model that is able to more rigorously represent the load distributions or redistributions when the building behaves as a unit or any portion is overloaded. A typical 5:12 sloped low-rise residential building is chosen as the prototype and analyzed under wind pressures measured in the wind tunnel. The structural connections, including the frame-to-frame connections and sheathing-to-frame connections, are modeled extensively to represent the critical structural details that secure the load paths for the entire building system as well as the boundary conditions provided to the building envelope. The nail withdrawal, the excessive displacement of sheathing, the nail head pull-through, the sheathing in-plane shear, and the nail load-slip are found to be responsible for the building envelope damage. The uses of the nail type with a high withdrawal capacity, a thicker sheathing panel, and an optimized nail edge distance are observed to efficiently enhance the building envelope performance based on the present numerical damage predictions.

In the global ship structure and vibration analysis, the FE(finite element) analysis model is required in the early design stage before the 3D CAD model is defined. And the analysis model generation process is a time-consuming job and takes much more time than the engineering work itself. In particular, ship structure has too many associated structural members such as stringers, stiffness and girders etc. These structural members should be satisfied as the constraints in analysis modeling. Therefore it is necessary to support generation of analysis model with satisfying these constraints as an automatic manner. For the effective support of the global ship analysis modeling, a method to generate analysis model using initial design information within ship design process, that hull form offset data and compartment data, is developed. In order to easily handle initial design information and FE model information, flexible data structure is proposed. An automatic quadrilateral mesh generation algorithm using initial design information to satisfy the constraints imposed on the ship structure is also proposed. The proposed data structure and mesh generation algorithm are applied for the various type of vessels for the usability test. Through this test, we have verified the stability and usefulness of this system including mesh generation algorithm.

This paper presents the design process and characteristic test results of tension sensors for measuring the ultimate tension forces of surgical wires. Three types of sensor were designed and tested for calibration. The first two types which transfer the wire tension to the sensing element by direct contact have too much hysterisis errors due to the firctional effect. This error can be considerably reduced in the modified structure, where a cover and a loading button is used to transfer force and moment to the sensing element. The strains predicted by theoretical equations agree well with those by finite element calculations neglecting friction and the strains by finite element analysis considering friction are in good agreement with those measured by four strain gages. The modified ring type tension sensor developed in this paper is expected to be useful for measuring the tension of surgical wires with nonlinearity of 1.31%FS, hysterisis of 5.74%FS and repeatability of 0.19%FS.
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are known as intelligent methods for modeling the behavior of physical phenomena because of it is a soft computing technique and takes data samples rather than entire data sets to arrive at solutions, which saves both time and money. ANN is successfully used in the civil engineering applications which are suitable examining the complicated relations between variables. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are advanced composites that successfully used in various engineering design. The FGMs are nonhomogeneous materials and made of two different type of materials. In the present study, the bending analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) beams presents on theoretical based on combination of mixed-finite element method, Gâteaux differential and Timoshenko beam theory. The main idea in this study is to build a model using ANN with four parameters that are: Young's modulus ratio (Et/Eb), a shear correction factor (ks), power-law exponent (n) and length to thickness ratio (L/h). The output data is the maximum displacement (w). In the experiments: 252 different data are used. The proposed ANN model is evaluated by the correlation of the coefficient (R), MAE and MSE statistical methods. The ANN model is very good and the maximum displacement can be predicted in ANN without attempting any experiments.

This paper is to present a new method of cogging torque reduction for axial flux PM machines of multiple rotor surface mounted magnets. In order to start softly and to run a power generator even the case of weak wind power, reduction of cogging torque is one of the most important issues for a small wind turbine, Cogging torque is an inherent characteristic of PM machines and is caused by the geometry shape of the machine. Several methods have been already applied for reducing the cogging torque of conventional radial flux PM machines. Even though some of these techniques can be also applied to axial flux machines, manufacturing cost is especially higher due to the unique construction of the axial flux machine stator. Consequently, a simpler and low cost method is proposed to apply on axial flux PM machines. This new method is actually applied to a generator of 1.0kW, 16-poles axial flux surface magnet disc type machine with double-rotor-single-stator for small wind turbine. Design optimization of the adjacent magnet pole-arc which results in minimum cogging torque as well as assessment of the effect on the maximum available torque using 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is investigated in this design. Although the design improvement is intended for small wind turbines, it is also applicable to larger wind turbines.
In this study, wave spectrum based fatigue analyses are studied for Turkey's adjacent coastal seas by using Maestro finite element analyzing software. Palmgren-Miner's method is used to obtain the fatigue safe life time. Palmgren-Miner's method was selected for the fatigue analyses because of its good acceptance of data from almost all classification societies such as Germanischer Lloyd, the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, etc. The maximum stress regions of the structures are obtained by using finite element analyses, and the results are compared with the endurance limit of the W$\ddot{o}$hler diagram of AA5059 H321 aluminum alloy. The wave characteristics table given in this article is used to obtain the number of cycles for each sea condition. By using the wave characteristics table, the wave lengths, wave speeds, and cycles are obtained. This study is performed to estimate the lifetimes of a semi-swath type coast guard boat and/or commercial yacht projects, which are produced by using AA5059 H321 aluminum alloy, under different sea environment conditions. Fatigue examinations are performed for both head seas and oblique seas.
The present paper deals with the application of the explicit finite element code, PAM-CRASH, to simulate the crash behavior of steel thin-walled tubes with various cross-sections subjected to axial loading. An isotropic elastic, linear strain-hardening material model was used in the finite element analysis and the strain-rate sensitivity of mild steel was modeled by using the Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation with modified coefficients. The modified coefficients were applied in numerical collapse simulations of 11 types of thin-walled polygon tubes: 7 convex polygon tubes and 4 concave polygon tubes. The results show that the thin hexagonal tube and the thick octagonal tube showed relatively good performance within the convex polygon tubes. The crush strengths of the hexagonal and octagonal tubes increased by about 20% and 25% from the crush strength of the square tube, respectively. Among the concave tubes, the I-type tube showed the best performance. Its crush strength was about 50% higher than the crush strength of the square tube.

This paper suggests the PIFA structure modified antenna in which short-circuit plate is located between planar element and ground plane, in order to solve the problem of narrow band of existing internal antenna, PIFA. It is also suggested that internal antenna has the perturbation in the patch to broaden the frequency bandwidth. It is possible that the antenna is installed into the mobile telephone with a low profile condition(h=0.015 λ) to use internally, and acquired desired bandwidth(5.2 %) through double resonance structure, remodeling the PIFA that is already well-known as an internal antenna. This paper investigated how characteristic is affected by the feeding point(Yf, Zf), short strip plate(Zs), short strip width(Ws), perturbation width(w), length(d), short plate height(h), dielectric($\varepsilon$$\_$r/) to be slim type antenna. It is compared with existing PIFA bandwidth, and is suggested pattern as the H.E plane. It is simulated using the Microwave Studio of the CST Inc. based on FIM(Finite Integration Method) method and analyzed antenna characteristic following the variation each parameters. The result proved the practical use of PIFA antenna by comparing the measured and simulated data of the antenna.
