As considerable interests in noise emission from the ships have been increased, control of the propeller cavitation generating vibration and radiating noise is looming large. In general, the tip vortex cavitation is first produced in case of full scale propellers, and noise levels rise dramatically from that moment. In order to reduce induced noise from the tip vortex cavitation and hence increase the cavity inception speed, we propose the mass injection method. Water injected from the propeller tip decreases rotating speed of the tip flow, and it restrains growing the tip vortex cavity. Experimental investigations of the model tests carried out in a large cavitation tunnel show that the tip vortex cavitation is effectively controled by water injection from the propeller tip.

The transient incompressible flow behind the axisymmetric bluff body is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). Based on the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, the Lagrangian approach with a stochastic simulation of diffusion using random walk technique is employed to account for the transport processes of the vortex elements. The numerical solutions for 2-dimensional recirculating flow behind a backward-facing step in the laminar range of Reynolds number are compared with experimental data. The present simulation focuses on the transitional flow regime where the recirculation zone behind the bluff body becomes highly unsteady and large-scale vortex eddies are shed from the bluff body wake due to intrinsic shear layer instabilities. The unsteady vertical flow structures and the mixing characteristics behind the bluff body are discussed in detail.
In this paper, we propose an efficient technique for improving the grid based fluid simulation by sub-grid visuals. The detailed turbulency generated efficiently by Vortex Particle Method are blended with the flow fields coming from the traditional incompressible Navier-Stokes solver. The algorithm enables large- and small- scale detail to be edited separately.

Numerical simulations for channel flows with $Re_{\tau}$ = 180, 395 and 590 have been performed to investigate the hairpin packet formation process in wall-bounded turbulent flows. Using direct numerical simulation databases, the initial flow fields are given by the conditionally averaged flow field with the second quadrant event specified at the buffer layer. By tracking the initial vortex development, the change in the initial vortex to an ${\Omega}$-shaped vortex and th generation of a secondary hairpin vortex were found to occur with time scales based on the wall units. In addition, at the time when the initial vortex has grown to the channel center, the inclination angle of the hairpin vortex packet is approximately $12{\sim}14^{\circ}$, which is similar for all three Reynolds numbers. Finally, numerical simulations of the evolution of two adjacent hairpin vortices have been performed to examine the interaction between the adjacent vortex packets.

A two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (2D PIV) system in a towing tank is employed to measure a wake field of a very large crude oil carrier model with rotating propeller in self propulsion condition, to identify characteristics of wake of a propeller working behind a ship. Phase-averaged and time-averaged flow fields are measured for a horizontal plane. Scale ratio of the model ship is 1/100 and Froude number is 0.142. By phase-averaging technique, trajectories of tip vortex and hub vortex are identified and characteristic secondary vortex distribution is observed in the hub vortex region. Propeller wake on the starboard side is more accelerated than that on the port side, due to the difference of inflow of propeller blades. The hub vortex trajectory tends to face the port side. With the fluctuation part of the phase-averaged velocity field, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) is also derived. In the center of tip vortex and hub vortex region, high TKE concentration is observed. In addition, a time-averaged vector field is also measured and compared with phase-averaged vector field.
Vortex-induced oscillation is a type of aeroelastic phenomenon, to which extended structures such as long-span bridges are most susceptible. The vortex-induced vibration (VIV) behaviors of a concerned bridge were investigated conventionally in virtue of wind tunnel tests on string-mounted sectional models. This necessitates the building of a linkage between the response of the sectional model and that of the prototype structure. Although many released literatures have related to this issue and provided suggestions, there is a lack of consistency among them. In this study, some theoretical models describing the vortex-induced structural motion, including the linear empirical model, the nonlinear empirical model and the modified (or generalized) nonlinear empirical model, are firstly reviewed. Then, the concept of equivalent mass density is introduced based on the principle that an equal input of energy should result in identical structural amplitudes. Based on these, the theoretical linkages between the amplitude of a section model and that corresponding to the prototype bridge are discussed with different analytical models. Theoretical derivation indicates that such connections are dependent mainly on two factors, one is the presupposed shape of deformation, and the other is the theoretical VIV model employed. The theoretical analysis in this study shows that, in comparison to the nonlinear empirical models, the linear one can result in obvious larger estimations of the full bridges' responses, especially in cases of cable-stayed bridges.
This experimental study investigated the flow characteristics for regular waves passing a rectangular floating structure in a two-dimensional wave tank. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to obtain the velocity field in the vicinity of the structure. The phase average was used to extract the mean flow and turbulence property from repeated instantaneous PIV velocity profiles. The mean velocity field represented the vortex generation and evolution on both sides of the structure. The turbulence properties, including the turbulence length scale and the turbulent kinetic energy budget were investigated to characterize the flow interaction between the regular wave and the structure. The results shaw the vortex generated near the structure corners, which are known as the eddy-making damping or viscous damping. However, the vortex induced by the wave is longer than the roll natural period of the structure, which presents the phenomena opposing the roll damping effect; that is, the vortex may increase the roll motion under the wave condition longer than the roll natural period.

Studies are made of the turbulent separation bubble in a two-dimensional semi-infinite blunt plate aligned to a uniform free stream when the oncoming free stream contains a pulsating component. The discrete-vortex method is applied to simulate this flow situations because this approach is effective to represent the unsteady motions of turbulent shear layer and the effect of viscosity near the solid surface. The two key external paramenters in the free stream, i.e., the amplitude of pulsation, A, and the frequency parameter St[=fH/ $U_{1}$], are dealt with in the present numerical computations, A particular frequency gives a minimum reattachment which is related to the drag reduction and the most effective frequency is dependent on the most amplified shedding frequency. The turbulent flow structure is scrutinized. A comparison between the unperturbed flow and the perturbed at the particular frequency of the minimum reattachment length of the separation bubble suggests that the large-scale structure is associated with the shedding frequency and the flow instabilities.
A rich phenomenon in the dynamics of azimuthal vortices in a circular cylinder caused by the inertial oscillation is investigated numerically at high Reynolds numbers and moderate Rossby numbers. In the actual spin-up flow where both the Ekman circulation and the bottom friction effects are included, the first appearance of a seed vortex is generated by the Ekman boundary-layer on the bottom wall and the subsequent roll-up near the corner bounded by the side wall. The existence of the small vortex then rapidly propagates toward the inviscid region and induces a complicated pattern in the distribution of azimuthal vorticity, i.e. inertial oscillation. The inertial oscillation however does not deteriorate the classical Ekman-pumping model in the time scale larger than that of the oscillatory motion. Motions of single vortex and a pair of vortices are further investigated under a slip boundary-condition on the solid walls. For the case of single vortex, repeated change of the vorticity sign is observed together with typical propagation of inertial waves. For the case of a pair of vortices with a two-step profile in the initial azimuthal velocity, the vortices' movement toward the outer region is resisted by the crescent-shape vortices surrounding the pair. After touching the border between the core and outer regions, the pair vortices weaken very fast.

An experimental study is performed to investigate characteristics of near of wakes of circular cylinders with serrated fins using a hot-wire anemometer for various freestream velocities. The main focus of this paper is to investigate a reason why a vortex formation length is increased suddenly. Velocity of the fluid which flow through fins decreases as fin's height and freestream velocity increases and fin pitch decreases, and a thickness of boundary layer increases. The finned tube has a lower velocity gradient when the higher boundary layer grows. This velocity gradient on finned tube makes a weak shear force in the wake and moves to downstream in a state of lower momentum transfer between the freestream and the wake. The phenomenon makes a vortex formation length increased suddenly. The fluctuations of the velocity distributions on the finned tube and (equation omitted) = 1.0 contour line in the vortex formation region decreases when the fin height increases and the pitch decreases.
