A 3-D compressible Navier-Stokes solver using overlapped grids is developed to predict a flow-field around a hovering rotor. The flow solver is verified by a parametric study with the grid spacing of wake grid, spatial accuracy and turbulence model. Computations are performed with different Chimera grid systems. Computational results are compared with the experimental data of Caradonna et al. for both blade loading and the tip vortex behavior. Numerical results show good agreements with experiments for the distribution of surface pressure and tip vortex behavior. Pressure distributions over the blade have marginal differences for different numerical methods, whereas large discrepancies are seen in the prediction of the wake behavior. Results unexpectedly show that the vortex strength from an automated cut-paste Chimera grid is weaker than that from the conventional Chimera grid.
Lighting poles and antenna masts are typically high, slender and light structures. Moreover, they are often characterized by distributed eccentricities that make very complex their shape. Experience teaches that this structural type frequently suffers severe damage and even collapses due to wind actions. To understand and interpret the aerodynamic and aeroelastic behavior of lighting poles and antenna masts, this paper presents the results of static and aeroelastic wind tunnel tests carried out on a complex prismatic element representing a segment of the shaft of such structures. Static tests are aimed at determining the aerodynamic coefficients and the Strouhal number of the test element cross-section; the former are used to evaluate the critical conditions for galloping occurrence based on quasi-steady theory; the latter provides the critical conditions for vortex-induced vibrations. Aeroelastic tests are aimed at reproducing the real behavior of the test element and at verifying the validity and reliability of quasi-steady theory. The galloping hysteresis phenomenon is identified through aeroelastic experiments conducted on increasing and decreasing the mean wind velocity.

In the present paper, the swirl flow structure and flame characteristics of turbulent premixed combustion in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). A G-equation flamelet model is employed to simulate the unsteady flame behavior. When inlet swirl number is increased, the distinct flow structures, such as the shapes of corner recirculation and center toroidal recirculation zone, are observed and the flame length is shorted gradually. Also, the phenomena of flashback are identified at strong swirl intensity. In order to get the accurate description of unsteady flame behavior, the predictive ability of the acoustic wave in a combustor is primarily evaluated. It is found that the vortex generated near the edge of step plays an important role in the flame fluctuation. Finally it is examined systematically that the flame and heat release fluctuation are coupled strongly to the vortex shedding generated by swirl flow and acoustic wave propagation from the analysis of flame-vortex interaction.
Many tower-supported steel stacks have been constructed in Japan, primarily for economic reasons. However the dynamic behavior of these stacks under a strong wind is not well known and the wind load design standard for this type of a stack has not yet been formulated. In light of this situation, we carried out wind response observation of an operating tower-supported steel stack with and without a tuned-mass damper. The observation revealed the performance of the tuned-mass damper installed on the stack in order to control the wind-induced vibration. Based on the observed data, we performed a wind tunnel test of a specimen of the stack. In this paper we report the results of the wind tunnel test and some comparisons with the results of observation. Our findings are as follows: 1) the tuned-mass damper installed on the specimen in the wind tunnel test worked as well as the one on the observed stack, 2) the amplitude of the vortex-induced vibration of the specimen corresponded approximately to that of the observed stack, and 3) correlation between Scruton number and reduced amplitude, y/d, (y is amplitude, d is diameter) was confirmed by both the wind tunnel test and the observed results.

Acoustic excitations were imposed to coaxial air jet of non-premixed jet flame with hydrogen gaseous injected axially in the center of the flow. The frequencies of excitation were three dominant resonant frequencies at 1L, 2L, 3L. modes including specially 514 Hz (2L-mode) which was estimated theoretically as longitudinal mode of combustor characteristics. The mixing enhancement by acoustic forcing has been investigated quantitatively using PLIF and PIV. The effect of acoustic excitation on combustion process was significant to enhance mixing rate that coincides with specific resonant frequencies. And the behavior of vortex-interaction on flame structure was a good evidence to investigate the phenomenon of shear/mixing layer of fuel-air jet structure. The results obtained in this study concludes that generated streamwise vortex by acoustic excitation has a potential to enhance the mixing rate and abating NOx emissions.

The Vortex-induced Motions (VIM) phenomenon of semi-submersibles is relevant for the fatigue life of moorings and risers. Model tests regarding the VIM behavior of a semi-submersible with four square columns were conducted in order to investigate the effects of the current incidence and the aspect ratio of the immerged column. The experimental results show that the largest transverse amplitudes are around 70% of the column width at $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ incidences in a range of reduced velocities from 5 to 8 when the aspect ratio of the immerged column is 1.90. The largest yaw motion occurs at $0^{\circ}$ incidence with the peak value around $4.5^{\circ}$. Similar characteristics of the VIM response are observed for the semi-submersible with aspect ratios of 1.90 and 1.73. When the aspect ratio decreases 50% to 0.87, 30% decrease in the peak transverse amplitudes can be seen.
Three-dimensional numerical study is performed for the flow analysis around the rolling stock with square cross section (Mugungwha train model). The height (H) of rolling stock is considered as the characteristic length and the total length of rolling stock is 40 which correspond to 1/2 unit of rolling stock. The gap between the surface and rolling stock is 0.17H which is average value. The relative velocity between the surface and rolling stock is assumed to be zero and Re=10,000 based on the characteristic length. Low Re ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$[15] is employed for the calculation of turbulence which resolve all the way to the solid surface (laminar sub-layer). Large flow separation occurred at the front head of train and a pair of vortex is generated on both top and side of rolling stock. The behavior of vortices on the top of the rolling stock is believed to affect the performance of the pantograph which should be intensively investigated. The difference between the high pressure in the front stagnation region of train and the low pressure in the rear separated region causes a large pressure drag. A large pair or vortex are generated in the rear of train and the size of vortex is increased more than the size of cross section of train.

Pressure oscillations triggered by the unstable interaction of dynamic flow features of the hydraulic turbine with the hydraulic plant system - including the electrical design - can at times reach significant levels and could lead to damage of plant components or could reduce component lifetime significantly. Such a problem can arise for overload as well as for part load operation of the turbine. This paper discusses an approach to analyze the overload high pressure oscillation problem using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of the hydraulic machine combined with a network modeling technique of the hydraulic system. The key factor in this analysis is the determination of the overload vortex rope volume occurring within the turbine under the runner which is acting as an active element in the system. Two different modeling techniques to compute the flow field downstream of the runner will be presented in this paper. As a first approach, single phase flow simulations are used to evaluate the vortex rope volume before moving to more sophisticated modeling which incorporates two phase flow calculations employing cavitation modeling. The influence of these different modeling strategies on the simulated plant behavior will be discussed.

Floating breakwaters were treated as solid bodies without any perforation in previous studies. In this study, however, a floating breakwater is perforated to allow the partial absorption of the energy produced by incident waves and an air chamber is placed in the upper part to control the breakwater draft. A series of laboratory experiments for a floating breakwater installed with a mooring system are carried out. In general, a mooring system can be classified by the number of mooring points, the shape of the mooring lines, and the degree of line tension. In this study, a four-point mooring is employed since it is relatively easier to analyze the measured results. Furthermore, both the tension-leg and the catenary mooring systems have been adopted to compare the performance of the system. In laboratory experiments, the hydraulic characteristics of a floating breakwater were obtained and analyzed in detail. Also, a hydraulic model test was carried out on variable changes by changing the mooring angle and thickness of perforated wall. A hydraulic model was designed to produce wave energy by generating a vortex with the existing reflection method. Analysis on wave changes was conducted and the flow field around the floating breakwater and draft area, which have elastic behavior, was collected using the PIV system. From the test results the strong vortex was identified in the draft area of the perforated both-sides-type floating breakwater. Also, the wave control performance of the floating breakwater was improved due to the vortex produced as the tension in the mooring line decreased.
The flow field around a symmetrical airfoil in a uniform flow under the generation of noise was numerically studied and compared with experimental datum. The numerical simulation was carried out by LES which employs a deductive dynamic model as subgrid-scale model. The result of an attack angle of $6^{\circ}$ indicate that the discrete frequency noise is generated when the separated laminar flow reattaches near the trailing edge of the pressure side and the turbulent boundary layer is formed over the suction side of the airfoil near the trailing edge. The periodic behavior of vortex formation was observed around the trailing edge and it persists further downstream in the wake. The frequency of the vortex formation in the wake was consistent with that of the discrete frequency noise.
